I have, as Walt Mossberg knew Steve Jobs, interviewed him and evidently, according to Walt, allowed Walt early access to products.

Lately though, the podcast has seemed pretty annoying. Absolutely everything Walt and Nilay say about Apple, the headphone jack, the 7, the camera, etc, its constantly "well....". Its so damn annoying.

Absolutely everything they say now is peppered with an anti Apple slant.

I never saw him write anything smart. I feel he doesn't remotely know how anything at all works.

i think Nilay's attitude rubbed off on Walt a bit. at the end of the day both of them are just journalists, evaluate or provide commentary mostly on consumer technology products without offering much insight.

Walt never got over Steve's death. Hanging out with Nilay obviously doesn't help, but for him Jobs was Apple and now everything is terrible since.

We are talking about 2 people though. Nilay the editor of The Verge and Walt Mossberg who is part of The Verge but also writes elsewhere and as I said was close with Steve Jobs.

Until recently, Walt was very "pro-Apple". He loved all the products etc..

As I said, I cant turn on the podcast and not hear both of them say "well...". I am literally hearing their voices, specifically Walt's, say that, as I type it out.

Nilay threw a tantrum about the headphone jack. Walt seemed to suggest the 7, the airpods, and everything associated with all that, and Watch series two, were all "meh" if not inferior to what Samsung and Android are doing.

I think this is accurate. But i listened to the early episodes of the podcast last year and he was still pro apple. Still seemed to think they were the best company in the world. Its something thats happened in the last year.

He's been negative about Apple about some time now. Negative in a way that he is always with unreasonable expectations (that is being the best at everything, no bugs, no shortcomings, etc.), asking things they don't ask to anyone else.

Maybe because Apple's actions of late have been such that its generated those negative podcasts? Sure people have made logical backbend trying to justify the removal of headphone jack, but for the average person, its a ludicrous move. They did it to sell more expensive wireless headphones, pure and simple. I, like my wife have simple needs and the removal of the jack is a negative.

I find Walt to be generally positive about Apple, but he will say if he doesn't like something.

Walt has been negative about Apple for some years, now. He was one of the first to sit on the "decline" bandwagon, with a lot of articles regarding software quality, photos.app issues that needed personal support from Apple, itunes issues that needed 2 apple engineers at his home, etc.

Since leaving the WSJ, all Walt did was trying to raise the clicks of his newer initiatives. Being Anti-Apple, just like being anti-Ali, was always best for business. People will pay more to see Ali/Apple lose.

Nilay isn't a journalist at all: he is a failed attorney and a blogger, with a high level of personal insecurity, because he is nothing more than a tiny, insecure, brown man with some lol-worthy fashion sense.

Because the average person is misinformed, some people even think you cannot listen to music anymore. Most people are okay with it, providing it comes with lightning headphones and the 3.5mm adapter free. However, the message that passes is that Apple is isn't giving you options.

They did it to sell more expensive wireless headphones, pure and simple. I, like my wife have simple needs and the removal of the jack is a negative.

They did it to put a bigger battery, bigger taptic engine, stereo speakers (and sell less bluetooth speakers), bigger camera. This is truth.

Everything else, it's opinion.

If so, why 90% of their podcasts revolve around Apple?

Apple is a small share of the industry, it's not like a democratically elected government that needs to serve the people and their interests.

Apple is a for profit company, if they don't like Apple, then switch their phones to Android, their computers to Windows/Linux and be happy. It's a free market, and people make their own individual choices.

Tim Cook doesn't point a gun to your head and make you choose Apple products, does he?

Because the way they talk, it looks like that. Even tough all their criticism, Android fans (not the fanboys, mind you), hate The Verge, not because they are biased, but because all they write seems to revolve around Apple.

Yes, I listen and enjoy it a lot – I sometimes randomly laugh out loud in public while listening.

I actually perceived a pro-Apple slant if anything; occasionally Walt steps aside to mention he doesn't have a vested or monetary interest in the company because he thinks he's indulging them too much. They're critical and through their own gripes and opinions in now and then, but that's… in my mind why I'd listen to a podcast that touches on Apple by people who aren't Apple. (I think Apple's truthful in the way they talk about themselves at keynotes and online, but they always cast themselves carefully in the best light they can; so it's refreshing to have just random people's perspective as a check on that when you're a fan of them.)

Guess I must be one of the uniformed then, cause I don't have strong opinions about it
Couldn't care less one way or the other 'cause I never use the the jack and haven't for years
So yeah, I'm one of the ones that is OK with it

I did the same uninformal surveying of my wife and my friends and if they were not okay with it to begin with, once they learnt about the adapter and bt they were all "oh, ok". It's not a big deal in practice.

Or I just don't care. Anyway, even before the iPhone 7 came out, I had been using bluetooth with my iPhone always, and only use the wired headphones at home, that is, with my MBP and iPP, so it's no deal for me, I have bought a bluetooth adapter for my car, and el cheapo beater bluetooth earphones for the gym.

Just like the Apple Pencil charging.

Apple should burn some money to make sure people know these things, so people know they have been lying/been impartial with them.

People in my circle had strong opinions about it too (because they didn't want to go wireless and also didn't understand that there was going to be a lightning version of the EarPods in the box), but it doesn't matter now millions of these are landing in people's hands. Apple knew that the key to making this work was introducing a color/finish that would sway people into willing to deal with it.

It won't matter once lightning corded stuff becomes the norm in the market either. Although with Bluetooth headphones now dominating the sales, it might just be that more people buy them instead, especially now that they're all going to take from Apple's book the idea of charging them in a case.

I care, but I'm not in the market for a new phone anytime soon, so it's not worth worrying about.

Most people would just stick the lightning adapter to the headphone pair, if they have anything else besides the EarPods that come with the phone, and that's it.

My wife got a battery case, a couple of years ago, and it shipped with a dongle, because of the depth of the case. She lost that dongle within a week. I suspect that will be the case for a many folks. Dongles add to the collection of stuff you need to carry just to use an apple product.

I can't answer for others, but I know for myself and wife, dongles are not the answer. Luckily for me, I got a SE and I'm not in the market for a new phone, but she is.

I find them refreshing, Walt is an old fart and his down to earth take on Stuff is a relief after spending time with people that just can't imagine Apple doing ANY wrong.
As for the two topics you mention I absolutely agree with him. Apple has a R&D budget of 10 billion USD/year in total, i find it baffling that old tech like stereoscopic camera software functions are basically left undone in the first iteration, I mean, it's supposed to be the major selling point for the plus model.

To hear clueless fanboy after clueless fanboy parrot nonsensical company pitches can be disheartening if you're heavily invested in the platform they are defending, I mean at some point you start to wonder if you're the only sensible one left in a group of fanatics.

And i agree with them about the chipset too, Iphone reigns supreme by a generation+, and with a (healthier) underlying architecture than android.
