budget of 10 billion USD/year in total, i find it baffling that old tech like stereoscopic camera software functions are basically left undone in the first iteration, I mean, it's supposed to be the major selling point for the plus model.

That doesn't work.

Stereoscopic works when both lenses have the same focal distance and aren't positioned to have the same image.

On the iPhone 7Plus they have diferente focal distance and are positioned to have the same image, so when you zoom, you don't notice the difference between lenses.

Also, the separation possible isn't large enough for the 3D effect.

No, we do not. We do not even read what he has to say in his articles on verge.com.

No, that's how stereoscopic images used to work 30 years ago, now you use the "weaker" image to calculate object depth.

The separation is not large enough for natural 3D effect, but plenty for software assisted 3D.
I'm not expecting useless samsung gimmicks, but with a 10BN R&D budget it's very disappointing that they stand around talking about AR instead of making their own demonstration of the future.
EDIT:
they do use depth mapping to some degree to make that picture with the blurry background, but look at his ear, it's decidedly unimpressive and even more so for such a low tech effect.

I find them refreshing, Walt is an old fart and his down to earth take on Stuff is a relief after spending time with people that just can't imagine Apple doing ANY wrong.
As for the two topics you mention I absolutely agree with him. Apple has a R&D budget of 10 billion USD/year in total, i find it baffling that old tech like stereoscopic camera software functions are basically left undone in the first iteration, I mean, it's supposed to be the major selling point for the plus model.

To hear clueless fanboy after clueless fanboy parrot nonsensical company pitches can be disheartening if you're heavily invested in the platform they are defending, I mean at some point you start to wonder if you're the only sensible one left in a group of fanatics.

EDIT:
And i agree with them about the chipset too, Iphone reigns supreme by a generation+, and with a (healthier) underlying architecture than android.

Id say the opposite. I buy apple and support them because i love their products. If I didnt Id buy android. Walt given his background should be the ultimate apple fanboy. But as I said, what apple product did he love this year? He hasn't or didnt support a single one. That seems the complete opposite of what you are saying. He and Nilay aren't saying apple can do some things wrong. They seem to be suggesting they cant do anything right. And thats just as silly as what you are imagining fanboys saying. Surely the biggest company in the world is doing SOME THINGS right. And surely the people on this forum agree with this idea as well. Otherwise we'd be on the Samsung equivalent. This isn't android rumors forum. We are here because we love and support Apple.

Well...

Apple does a lot of good things. But what have they done this year that is, far and away, better than the competition?

They are not the apple fans they used to be, but it's not fair to them to say they always criticize everything apple does.
We are here because we love and support Apple.
I'm here because i'm very heavily invested in the apple ecosystem both for work and private, and i'm really starting to feel like they dont care about providing good platforms anymore but grow steadily more concerned with locking people still tighter into the apple ecosystem. And on a more emotional note i think they have much less style than they used to.
