I have the AirPods Pro. I also have a MacBook Pro, iPhone, 2 iPads, and an Apple Watch all on the same iCloud account. I use my AirPods Pro for running while streaming from my Apple Watch. I use them for this exclusively. Never with any other device, never for anything else. I run 5-6x mornings a week, every week and I have had this AirPods Pro since launch day.

Here's what happens in the morning when i take them out of the case to go running:

  • 10% of the time: Nothing. They don't activate/pair. No amount of putting them back in the case and taking them out fixes it. Must "forget" and press-n-hold-white-button to re-pair
  • 20% of the time: One of the two pairs. Have to put them both back in the case, wait, then back in my ears. Rinse and repeat... each time resulting a 50/50 chance of both pairing. So usually 2-4 times will do it.
  • 10% of the time: I get pairing "bong" in both, but the watch can't play through them. I get the screen telling me to select and output device and selecting the airpods results in "There was a problem connecting..." Need to forget-n-pair
  • 10% of the time: one or both of them has 0% battery because I have to press/wiggle/jiggle/hope when I put them in the case so they make contact with the charging contacts
  • 50% of the time: they work as expected
  • BONUS NEW BEHAVIOR with Watch OS7/iOS14: ~10% of the time in addition to one of the above, putting them in my ears causes music to randomly start playing on my iphone or or one of the ipads (not even through the AirPods). This is wonderful when the ipad is on the nightstand and the wife is still sleeping.
It's infuriating that my $40 Anker Buds are 100% reliable. Never failed to connect. Ever. I love Apple stuff (refer to aforementioned list of Apple stuff I own), but this has been a downright miserable experience.

So is this just me?
Mine hasn’t been as bad as yours, but connection reliability has been getting worse month by month.

i did manage to get one bud paired to one apple device, and the other paired to another by accident though.

Updates:

Received replacement airpods pro which are said to be new. They are completely charged & iPhone 11 is updated to iOS 14.1. Airpods firmware needs updating but there is, of course, no way to update it manually that I can discover. Trying to see if the firmware will update by putting connected airpods in their charging case next to the iPhone.

Furthermore, although the replacement airpods are both allegedly connected to bluetooth on the iPhone only the left one works. The right one is dead. Have already done "forget this device" a couple of times. No luck.

Verdict: still think that Airpods Pro are garbage. I would not advise purchasing Airpods Pro but if you do, get Applecare so that you can replace them and perhaps, eventually, get a pair that works. Hope I can get them to work sometime but am not holding my breath.
Same here

Yes they are garbage. I own two pair. People I am conversing with can also hear a mouse breathe at 100m through my mic. It’s absurd and annoying yet my plantronics ugly stick earpiece is 100x better quality fir my audience and never fail to pair.

Similar experiences here. They are very unreliable. My 2nd gen AirPods are great.

I’ve no faith in Apple to deliver the experience they promise with these or future products in the line.
Yep. Original pair quit working after 2-3 months. Of the replacement pair, only the L one worked. The second replacement R Airpod for the first replacement R Airpod doesn't work either. Perhaps it's the charger. At this point, I believe that my guess is at least as good as Apple's. Just wish I could charge *them* for all the time I've spent online & on the phone with support trying to get the issues fixed.

There are 6 people in my household and we have 3 sets of AirPod Pros and 3 sets of 2nd gen Airpods.

All of us with Airpod Pros have intermittent charging issues. They work 90-95% of the time but there is that day or 2 per month where one bud is not charged or pairing well.

All the members with the 2nd gen AirPods have rock solid reliability. No charging issues ever and rarely every pairing issues.

I got my AirPod Pros 3 months ago and the right one wasn't charging properly in the case. Would randomly be dead when going to use it but it wasn't consistent. Apple ended up replacing the right AirPod and the case (which I believed to the be the culprit). Have had a few pairing issues too. I've been buying Apple products for 14 years now, also owned the original AirPods from launch and this is the most trouble I've ever had with one of their products. Worried about getting the rattling issue at some point too. For the price the reliability just isn't there.

Even before I had to have one replaced for the rattle thing, I was thinking that they are simply too expensive for a product that will eventually be rendered useless by battery deterioration.

That said, they are —for me— the best ever headphones I’ve found for exercise (during the 15 years since I got the first iPod shuffle). Paired with an Apple Watch, the combination —again, for me— feels like science fiction in terms of sound quality factored with convenience. Just yesterday I was noticing someone wearing a giant iPhone (or perhaps iPod touch) on an upper arm band tethered to earbuds and I thought, “there but for the grace of... haha

I completely agree. While still expensive, if I can get them swapped near the end of two years for battery service (with Applecare+) and can get another 2 years out of them potentially they'll be worth it to me. I don't think I'd purchase another pair though at the current price point but love the convenience.

As I mentioned on post 24, mine lose settings from one day to the next.

I’d hoped it might go away with iOS updates but alas. Every day it’s lost my settings, and BONUS, now every day I have to go into BT settings to merely connect them to my phone, never mind set left to Siri, disable Transparency etc. The settings stay and the connection works automatically for about a day.

My opinion of the Airpods line gets progressively worse and worse. When they work = good product. But it takes effort to make them work = bad product.

No service
I've owned mine for a year and they have been spectacularly reliable for a wireless device. I think I had only two minor Bluetooth connection issues in the past twelve months.

I was super skeptical when I bought them a year ago, was ready to send them back within the two-week window. I also recognized the warranty period.

Most of the Internet has people like me: very satisfied with the product in question, so much so that commenting on the device is not at the top of my priority list.

That was me and then I was sitting on a train one day two weeks ago and out of no where the left one started to make cracking sounds. It sounded like someone was doing Morse code in my ear. Two days after my warranty expired too! Thank god for the replacement program starting just in time.

what I did notice prior to this is that my fit test failed every time, no matter what tip I tried. When I got them, it passed on any tip.

now that I got the replacements I am like that is what ANC used to sound like?!? Guess I was so used to it not working right, that I didn’t even realize something was off with them.
