Only got Apple Care once ever and not again, it is like any insurance really. Unless you are part of the people who use the insurance more often than the average and you can actually afford the cost if something happens, you are better off never getting that type of insurance.

I have never broken a tech device ever, even though I am not careful at all with them and use no cases or screen protectors. So my risk of damage is way lower than the average so they dont make sense to me.

If you're not careful with your devices at all and don't use cases or screen protectors, why are you under the illusion that your risk of damage is lower than average? It's quite obviously much higher if you were to drop the device. Just because you've never broken a tech device is not proof that your 'risk' of damage is lower. That statement doesn't even make sense.

I bought it for my recent 10.5 but I got a deal on price of the tablet and figured any screen bright spot issues would be covered for two years.

Not being careful doesn’t mean im throwing my phone in the ground on purpose, it just means I am using my devices as they are without worrying about it. They are tools and shouldn’t hinder me, they should be helping me.

I’d have to break A LOT of things in the coming years to make up for the money saved on not getting insurances previously because I am well ahead. Me not breaking anything yet is not proof no but it is a clear indication that I seem to break stuff less often than what the insurance would suggest I need to do to benefit from having it.

That is basically how insurance works though, the vast majority pays for a small minority of people who seem to be able to break phones/tablets as if they were made out of ice.

EDIT: The rule in the insurance business from us who actually do the calculations and set the premiums for insurances are usually as follows. “Never get insurance for something where the loss does not significantly impact your economy”. That is of course unless you have reason to believe you are on of the few that will use the insurance way more than the average.

Oh I understand how insurance works and agree it isn't worth it for most, but again, the way your statement was worded was basically "I'm not at all careful with my devices but have never broken one therefore my risk of damage is less than others". Do you see how that doesn't make sense? It's like saying, "I walk blindfolded down the middle of the road at night but have never been hit by a car, therefore my risk of getting hit by a car while blindfolded is less than others."

Yeah sorry if I wasn’t clear. What I meant was that even though I am not babying my stuff they seem to not break for me, didn’t mean that I am careless with them.

Nope. I’ve never purchased Apple Care and have never had an issue where I would need to use it. I just take good care of expensive things.

This is possibly to one side of the discussion but I've bought AppleCare on every Mac (not iOS device) I've owned and I've had a "claim" on every one of them that has exceeded the cost of AC. These have all been out of warranty failures.

I haven't bought AC on an iOS device since the iPhone 4, but looking at the repair/replacement costs on the iPad Pro and considering the relatively (apparently) fragile build of the 2018 iPad Pro, it seemed like a reasonable bet. Ask me in about two years whether it was worth the cost...

I thought about it, but didn't. My iPad is almost always at home and I"m usually on the bed or sofa so didn't feel the need. I have never had is on any of my iPads.

I always get some type of insurance on every device if I can. Accidents do happen. For my first macbook pro I used my applecare for the full three years enough times (I had a bit of a dud of a comp as the trackpad had to be replaced 3 or 4 times, I believe my logic board, my battery as well once. - sis on the other hand never had to use applecare).

As I travel with my ipad. I somehow managed to put a tiny cosmetic dent on my new ipad pro just the other day. Luckily its a small nick and towards the back side and not towards the screen. The kicker is that it had a case, glass screen protector, and was in my bag. Bag fell sideways while open, I was putting a shopping bag inside. The ipad was still inside my bag.. and the ipad was jutting out from the pocket when sideways, so didnt have the extra protection from the separate pocket - just the thin material from the bag. I still got a tiny dent on the side where the case didnt protect. The bag fell maybe threeish feet off to the side. I was surprised it even got a dent. I guess it could have turned out much worse if it had toppled out. Definitely getting a sleeve now as well.

The only thing that annoys me is that applecare + is only two years for an ipad. With the price of the product. I would hope they would give us three years.

Some time ago Apple did give 3 years with an Edu. purchase for laptops. But that was a long, time ago.

Over the years I've dropped two Apple laptops (ugh. owned by my employer) out of a sling bag, and then out of a messenger bag. My fault for not remembering to fasten them correctlyo_O

AppleCare gives me some peace of mind.

Because I take care of my devices. I don’t use 10-11” screens worth close to $1,000 in precarious situations. I always have then in a “case” with back protection and a screen cover.

My iPad isn’t constantly being taken in/out of my pocket or carried around. When in use, I’m almost always sitting or lying down.

There’s no need to drop more money on useless insurance.

Apple care is about more than just being clumsy. It’s also about getting a second year of defective coverage. Which can be great because not everyone has consumer laws they can use and even many who do have the six month test to use the laws and there are many things that will fail after six months.

You’re not wrong, but the OP asked why I do or don’t.

My credit card already doubles manufacturer warranties, so I personally wouldn’t need need AC+ for that reason.

YMMV.

Yes. I always get AppleCare. It is insurance. If you don't need it you feel like you wasted your money. If you need it for some reason it is money well spent. It is not a hardship for me so I don't worry over the decision.

Not with every product but from time to time Apple has helped me a lot because I had AppleCare on everything. This time it was my iPhone 8. It has been replace twice for strange issues. No questions asked. Now it seems to be working very well.

That was precisely the case with my Macs. I've had much better luck with iOS devices.
