It depends. Normally, I just give others advice as to which Apple device would suit their needs best, but I have bought my mom a couple iPads and an Apple Watch for various Christmas/birthday presents. I’ll also usually give away older devices to friends/family when I upgrade, such as old iPad minis, iPads, and Apple watches

I do not. I'm fortunate to have money, but a gift that large is usually not appropriate for a son of immigrants. That being said, I did buy my parents an Apple TV once.

I usually recommend anyone in my family who I have to provide support for use Apple in case I can't help them with an issue.

I don’t know what’s socially acceptable in America. I only know melting pot of customs.

My parents got integrated into my family of marriage. It’s an incredible family. When my nieces and nephews got married their in-laws got assimilated, too. I know most family don’t keep track of family members extended that far, but we do. We pool resources and network for each other. Lol, it’s a little scary, too.

We’ve passed automobiles and furniture and carpeting and food and money around. The same $1000-$5000 makes its rounds to whoever needs it at any given time, pay it back, pay it forward...doesn’t matter as long as nobody is left to struggle.

My one sister-in-law has some issues that make it hard for her to keep a job and is always struggling financially, so we give her both hand me down Apple products and buy her new ones, depending on the situation. Her other family members do other things for her. But she’s no slacker, when we or her other family members need her, she drops everything to help. She’s been my rock so many times.

I really have no concept how people survive without their families. Ours is very dysfunctional and we are always fighting about something, but nobody is going to go without what they need. My sisters-in-law and I have smacked each other and said horrible insulting things to and about each other but we would drop anything to be there for each other.

One reason I don’t have trouble owning multiple phones is I don’t have to spend money on clothes and shoes and jewelry. My sisters-in-law get tired of theirs and it becomes mine. They also buy me new things for holidays.

We do some of this same sharing with longtime friends, too. Money and goods gets passed around to whoever needs it.

It never occurred to me it could be considered insulting to offer or accept hand me downs. It’s been only in recent years that I’ve become aware some people feel that way. It’s a shame, sharing is what we need for our environment.
