Yeah but that’s not the result of desktop class browsing vs mobile browsing. That’s the result of Safari text sizes and/or Macrumors text sizes getting tweaked, in a site that was already desktop class on the iPad.

Remember, if you go to Macrumors on an iPad in iOS 12, you get basically the same site as you get on a laptop or desktop. You do NOT get the mobile site like you get on iPhones.

You’re sort of missing my point. The SAME iPad mini renders text on this site differently on iOS 12 vs iOS 13. It absolutely is the case that iOS 13 now identifies itself to websites as a desktop computer as opposed to a tablet. Macrumors is designed as a “responsive” site and will serve up the version it deems most suitable based on the screen size of the device accessing it. Previously, it would serve up something suitable for a tablet. Now, at iOS 13’s request, it’s serving up something for a desktop and the text is being rendered differently. There may also be other optimizations Apple is also making under the hood. Net effect is that I now find an iPad mini useable whereas I previously would’ve agreed with you that text was way too small.

Hello, how are you?
A couple of days ago I picked up an iPad mini 4 for a very good price just to try out the form factor.
I’ve had several iPads and the last one being an Air 2.
I had sold the air 2 in anticipation to upgrade to the new air 3, but never got around to spend the asking price due to the limited usage I always gave my ipads.

With the mini, I am finding that I enjoy the form factor.
It is very light and very good to read on the couch.

But I am finding it to be just a bigger iPhone.
I have an iPhone 8 Plus, and I know the iPad mini screen area is double of the iPhone, but the ipad has the exact same apps I have on my phone, the home screens are arranged exactly the same...
And I use the iPad mini exactly like I use the iPhone.
The only difference is the bigger screen.
And the iPhone I also use as my camera, so it has that advantage.

Based on this, despite the mini being good to hold, I am wondering if I should keep it just to use about an hour a day on the couch or if I should just sell it and keep using the iPhone for everything...

What are your thoughts and experiences on this matter?

Cheers!

It's absolutely not redundant. I prefer the size/weight and portability of the iPad Mini... My wife has an Air 2, and I find it just too big to haul around, or to even hold comfortably for more than 10 minutes.

I have the Xs Max and the Mini 4... looking for a Mini 5 at a good price - the sales are coming. :D

I think the iPad mini with the iPad Pro form factor would be awesome and not redundant in the slightest. I just don't think sales for the device hold up.

I have a XS Max and an 11” iPad Pro. My 8 year old has my old mini 3. I still absolutely LOVE the mini form factor whenever I pick it up, but that screen size is definitely becoming redundant as the largest phones are getting closer and closer to that size. Would I prefer an iPad mini to my iPhone for reading and note taking? Yes, but at this point it would fall squarely into the “nice to have” category, especially since the new Pros are so capable and portable and the XS Max is so huge.

I’m super curious as to how well the mini 5 is actually selling at this point. It’s not super cheap considering that it has not been redesigned or given FaceID or anything crazy like that. Pencil support is super nice though.

That’s the thing though. I’ve got an XS Max and I love the mini 5. The difference in screen size practically speaking is huge. It’s to the point where my next phone is probably one of the smaller sizes.

I totally get that. I do still love that iPad mini form factor. There's just something about it.

Reasons I use the Mini instead of my phone:

1. Typing. It’s the perfect width for thumb typing.
2. Aspect ratio. Phones are tall and narrow in comparison.
3. It’s the only iPad you can still use one-handed if necessary.
4. It’s the size of a good book, not a sheet of paper/business document. This fits with the way I use it (casual web browsing and/or couch computer).
5. I just like it.

Just a follow up.
Ended up selling the surface Go.
Loved the hardware, the form factor, the full window on that footprint, the type cover...
But battery life was just plain awful and I really didn’t use it, so off it went.

Now I am deciding if I just keep the mini with my iPhone 8 Plus or if I sell the mini and go for a 10.5 air or 10.5 pro.

10.5 Pro is better, in my opinion than the Air.

If anything I consider my iPhone XS Max the lesser device since picking up a mini 5. It’s my go to electronic device 95% of the time. But as others have stated, it’s highly subjective. What works for me might not work for you.

If you do get rid of the iPad Mini, get an iPad Air 3.
