I’m on EE in the UK… I have an unlimited data plan on the phone and a 5GB plan on the iPad. Every month I can “gift” 120GB to my iPad, which works for me
Oh right; I forgot Europe doesn't suck as much as the U.S. when it comes to carriers ?

You probably pay way less than I do, too.

Well, obviously the point of cellular is for people on the go who will NOT have constant wi-fi access and who don't want to drain their phone battery with tethering.
If they're using their iPad that much their phone battery wouldn't be draining that much then anyway. If I were a multimillionaire yea sure I would buy the cellular version, but for the vast majority of people buying iPads it's a waste of money and doesn't benefit them in any way

Not sure what you mean. My point is if you're always or often in places where there is no wi-fi, then you're only option if you don't have a cellular-enabled iPad would be to use your phone as a hotspot, which will eat up you battery.

Also, I didn't know you had to be a multi-millionaire to afford a $150-$200 upcharge 🤣

What a narrow minded view. How 'bout everyone just buy what they feel is best for their needs?

I recommended that my dad get the cellular version last year for when he travels. He wouldn’t know how to hotspot from his phone to his iPad, plus it can be annoying to do that even if you know how. Furthermore, I don’t want him accessing public WiFi, since it’s not as safe.

But I get both sides of the argument.

Same with my mom and aunt. iCloud Personal Hotspot even with Auto-Join isn’t as reliable as built-in cellular. With the cellular version, I get less support calls about “wifi” not working on their iPad, too.

There’s a reason why cellular iPads exist, so there is no universal choice.

If you are a person who travels a lot, a cellular iPads makes a lot of sense as you don’t have to put up with hotel WiFi and tethering. If you are like me and use your iPad mostly in the house with the occasional trip away with it, a WiFi only variant is more suitable. It’s probably as simple as that.

I think that pretty much sums up why someone would choose an cellular iPad over the WiFi only model.

But in my case, I don’t travel a lot… I have a cellular iPad primarily because I don’t use an iPhone and using a cellular iPad gives me the benefit of always being connected to Apple ecosystem (iMessage and iCloud).

When I owned 10.5 iPP I felt that, despite me almost not using it outside home and tethering not being a problem for me when using it outside, that I could do with 4G version "just in case".

However, when I ordered my M1 12.9 I went for wifi, because in reality there was no use for 5G in my iPad.
But the order fulfillment was delayed at the store where I ordered due to production delays with Apple so I just went and grabbed 5G base version that was available for immediate delivery.

Never used 5G thus far, might come in handy one day, but, the way I look at it, not worth those extra 170 euros that I paid for it.
