Wow it’s nice to see someone on this forum excited as I am about the new iPhones. I know they’re very expensive but finally Apple potentially have them pretty well matching features of the Android phones I use. I’m excited about the new Apple Watch, too and look forward to having a nice pairing with my 256 GB gold Max. I would love to get 512 GB, but if I update next year for the next model, I would not get my money’s worth. It would take me about a year and a half to fill 512 GB. I’m just not sure what’s going to happen with 5G. Or whether or not we get triple lens camera modules or further display upgrades that may mitigate pwm flicker.
I'm still on my 4 year old 6 Plus. At first, I thought it was very awkward to use but it took some getting used to. I liked the ergonomics of past phones better. I'm upgrading to a regular XS as the screen is similar in size to my current phone but in a smaller casing so it will be a better fit. No need to go super-size this time around...
I did this too.I went from a 5S to a 6S+ and I love it. I ended up selling my iPad mini because I could do so much more with the bigger screen.
As long as Apple keeps giving decent trade in credits, upgrading annually also won’t be that horrible for those of us who own our phones outright. I am supposed to be on AT&T Next but I got sick of them bossing me around. I buy my phones elsewhere and slap the sim into them.Yes, I can’t wait until Friday. I almost decided to get the 256GB Max because I do manage with that amount of storage and do think that I could continue to do so. The idea of 512GB is amazing though and I wouldn’t need to delete podcasts to record 4K video. I have been in a pattern of signing a 2 year contract one year and then buying outright the next year. The costs are now very high though and I knew that if I got the 256GB Max that I’d want to upgrade again the next year and include 512GB as a reason for justifying the upgrade. So my plan this time is to upgrade to the bigger screen and bigger storage this year and keep the phone for 2 years. I’m currently half way through a plan though, so that is where it will be tough next year to resist signing a new plan. Instead, I am going to move to BYO phone plans and buy my iPhones outright. This will mean that my monthly costs will be much less and I’m not stuck paying for a higher plan that I need to get the phone that I’d like. Instead, I’ll buy the Max phone with a lesser plan that is sufficient for my needs and will buy outright, giving myself the freedom to upgrade my iPhone when I want and not when the plan dictates I can.
I agree that 5G will be awesome when we get it and that would bring a good reason to upgrade.

I tend to trade my phones in before their warranty expires. My Product Red iPhone 8 Plus will be an exception, because I purchased Apple Care Plus for it. I intend to hold onto this red iPhone and keep it in the family like I did with the iPhone SE and my Rose Gold 6s Plus that’s currently with my sister-in-law. I have three Android phones that stay with me, too. They get used for VR and music.
I thought there would be no way I’d even trade in my silver 8 Plus. But Apple gave me what I was wishing for. I have to go for it. Preferably with the XS-Max but if I don’t get along with the OLED I’ll happily take the Xr in a bright happy color.
I’m not opposed to upgrading annually as long as I get what I want. Like you, I’m always using my phones. I actually prefer to do my movie watching on them because I like the features like closed captioning and trivia. It’s so easy to control playback and extra features on my phones.
I do like keeping the unique phones indefinitely. I kept the 6s Plus for the headphone port. The SE for the size and headphone port. The 8 Plus for the best LCD display I’ve ever seen.
#2 is my biggest thing. The XS max is going to be heavy.I made a post on this last night so I’ll just paste it here:
I finally decided to actually cancel my pre-order entirely and it was difficult to pull that button and lose my shipping spot lol. Few reasons:
1. The price. I simply cant justify paying that much for a "phone" that is going to essentially have the same OS I'm already currently using. I even convinced my self the price wasn't too bad at first, but with the qualms of #2 and #3, I couldn't rationalize being uncomfortable at that price.
2. Weight. The XS Max is 20 grams heavier than my already heavy 7 Plus. At times my wrists get tired from holding the phone up and I simply cant imagine getting an even heavier phone. This is one area that hit me the hardest when the XS Max was announced. Lighter would've been best, same weight is doable, but heavier? I can't.
3. Size/pocket-ability. Having the larger screen has always been an added benefit, but im starting to realize that for me, its not worth the trade off of being able to pocket the phone. Its one of the things I miss about my 6. Its just so lumpy in my front pocket and dont feel safe keeping it in my back pocket when i'm out especially in crowded places like concerts, events, etc. It feels exposed. Although the Max is less wide and shorter than the Plus, that is cancelled out once you add a case which I would've done anyway.
Having the size of the X is perfect because I still get the same Plus size screen, but I get it in a smaller form factor with the addition of FaceID and the OLED screen. I know I will miss the battery life but I generally fair out ok in that department. I'd rather play with the Max in the stores first and hopefully make a better, clear decision. Hope you all enjoy your phones when they arrive!

I went to an 8+ this past year and I do love the bigger phone. I'd be lying, however, if I said there were not times that I wish I had the smaller phone; particularly when I pull my phone out while I'm waiting in line in a store, and I have items to purchase in the other hand; I miss being able to one-hand the phone.
I even went back and forth in my mind between the XS and the XS Max. I ended up with the XS Max, but I was very, very tempted by the XS because that smaller size again was a big draw. What sealed the deal for me is that the XS screen is narrower than the 8+ screen, and preferring larger type I need wider screens. I'm not a huge fan of the trend towards adding "inches" to a screen simply by extending the vertical length. I feel like if we're not careful we'll get a 13" screen that's 1" wide. The iPhone Ruler.
So, I am going with the XS Max. It's still technically smaller than my 8+ in both width and height, so I'm happy with it. I bought an apple leather case for it as I'm using an apple silicone case on my 8+ currently. I think the physical dimension difference will be negligible.
