The more I think about it, the less sense it makes for her to buy a new computer. She really needs something light and portable to take along on business travel, so she can keep up with personal stuff.
Important question - what does she say about that? I mean you can discuss this till you're blue in the face, but if she doesn't want an iPad, then there's no point in asking :) Happy wife = happy life

Happy daughter you mean.

I think an iPad will be more than sufficient for your daughter if her personal usage limits to what you have mentioned in the original post. In fact when iOS 11 launches, more and more people will be able to use it as a truly laptop replacement.

Having said that, I will advise you to keep the Air around if it still works, just in case she needs it for something else and also I will oppose with the people who are saying - get the most expensive iPad you can buy to "future proof" your purchase. In fact, I will suggest to take her to the Apple Store and let her try out the various screen sizes available starting from a mini to the 12.9" pro. That will narrow down your search a lot. If she seemed to like either the 9.7 or the 10.5 iPad then consider the 9.7 first because it's way cheaper and very powerful at this point. Unless she's going to use the Apple Pencil for creative work, personally, I feel the pro models costs a lot for an average iPad user.

I think this is excellent advise and probably the best path forward for my daughter. Also, I agree that she might be better off with the standard iPad rather than than than the Pro model. She will be less nervous about traveling with a $300 device compared to the Pro with accessories, which runs over $800 for the entry model plus ASK.

Maybe I need to change the title because folks don't appear to be reading the entire OP post. I am not asking if someone should use a work computer for personal needs. I am asking: Given you have a work computer for work needs and you would never do work on your personal computer anyway, why not just own an iPad for the personal stuff rather than buy a full blown computer? Especially, if you are traveling a lot for business and want something highly portable for personal needs only.

The iPad is the better choice for her “Personal” computer. Have her choose what screen size she likes at the Apple Store (or wherever fine Apple products are sold in your area) and get an ASK or equivalent.

I just did this myself in the last few weeks. I have a work issued Dell that served the same basic purpose as my 12 inch MacBook (I was actually using the MacBook for work stuff) so I sold it and got a previous generation 12.9 iPP. I have a 9.7 iPP that I use for couch surfing/pencil stuff but the 12.9 is my workhorse.

Its amazing how far iOS has come along in terms of practical everyday use regardless of screen size. Apple is ushering us into the future kicking and screaming LOL!

More annoying are the websites who use Flash or fancy layouts requiring mouse input that are pretty much broken when you try to use them on mobile devices.

From what you describe, I think an iPad would be an ideal computer. I am in the same scenario and use my company laptop for any work related tasks and an iPad and iPhone for personal use. I had a MacBook, but I rarely used it and felt there was no longer a need for it. I also became very bored with macOS.

This. I needed to open a PDF in Notability and since I was on my MacBook I opened the share sheet and looked for Notability and it was nowhere to be found.

Sure, I could have saved it on the desktop and opened it up in the Notability app but the share sheet in iOS makes it so much easier.

Small example but its a reflection of where the future is going IMO. iOS is the future!
