I used to think this was the holy Grail, and on iOS I'm still hoping for it to come out. But after having the rear fingerprint reader on a Pixel, Essential Phone, and S9, I have grown to love and depend on the swipe down gesture to pull down your notification panel, it really enhances one handed use and makes these phones easier to handle.

At this point, I think "face id" like tech on the front with the fingerprint reader on the back (near the center) is the best combo.

How about you, feel the same?

Interesting topic, thanks for posting!
I never used to be a fan of finger print scanners on the back of phones personally.

I've grown to get used to them, as a lot of my recent phones have had them, but for me they're not natural. They're only naturally ideal when you're picking a phone up or holding the phone.

I spend most of my time in work as I'm sure most others do, so my phone is always on the desk on its back. Unlocking the phone always requires me to pick it up which I find annoying.

So for me, an in display FPS would be more ideal but the tech would need to be up to par first. As in it would need to work haha.

I personally always favoured Sony's side mounted FPS, and wish they hadn't done away with it but I know why they did and it makes business sense.

Using this P20 now though, with a front FPS it's like returning to an older time haha and it is absolutely ideal for me. It provides a chin, which I think phones often do need to use comfortably, the scanner doubles as a navigation track pad and it's opened up a whole new way of using my phone that I absolutely love.

I feel spoiled! So yeah, sign me up for an in display one. I often wonder why so many people think the back is the best place for it. It's certainly not for me but we're allllll different!

Having the FPS on there back is actually the ideal spot for most situations, its only when the phone is laying flat on a table that a FPS on the front would be better.

We are definitely are spoiled.

I was in a similar situation as you, though my issue was using the fingerprint reader while on my car mount as opposed to it lying flat on a desk. Face ID and Samsung's face recognition has rendered that pain point moot for me though, while the reader on the back has made using the device one handed much easier with the gestures, no longer having to stretch my thumb up to swipe down.

Question, if face readers got to the point where it could see your face even when it's laying flat on a desk, would you still want a fingerprint sensor on the front?

I hope the Note 9 still has this feature.

My phone lays on its back at my desk too. But I don’t have to pick it up to unlock it with my fingerprint.

My iPhone is set to recognize 4 of my fingers. Both my left and right index fingers and thumbs.

It’s easy to unlock with a touch if it’s laying flat on either side of me. And easy to unlock regardless of which hand I might hold it in.

I would prefer that the fingerprint option remains on future phones. I have no interest in Face ID. I don’t want to pick up my phone to check messages. And I just don’t care for Face ID.

I think you're confusing what I'm saying. :)

iPhones I have no problem with as the finger print scanner is on the front. So of course you don't have to pick it up.
We're talking about Android devices where the FPS is located on the back of the phone. Which you do have to pick up to unlock. Unless you use a pass code.
[doublepost=1525513758][/doublepost]
Question, if face readers got to the point where it could see your face even when it's laying flat on a desk, would you still want a fingerprint sensor on the front?

No. Wouldn't be necessary.
Although my iPhone X already allows me to do this, so doesn't always need picking up. I can tap the screen and put my head over the phone on my desk and most times it will unlock. I do have to be over the phone though which I imagine often looks weird haha.

But if they got to the level of tech with Face ID where it could see and recognise you (Securely) from just being sat in front of it, then sign me up! :)

I'm with the unlocking-phone-lying-on-its-back crew, I do it probably hundreds of times daily when my phone lies next to me at work. It would be a right pain in the arse to pick it up every time and likewise to lean over to bring my mug into focus.

Would I prefer face unlock if the cam could detect me even when not directly in front? Honestly I just don't like the concept, it just makes me feel awkward that something would be scanning my face all the time.

I'm kind of old school though, I don't mind a bezel at all and a FPR below the screen on the front of the device is a solution I just don't need to have improved. But sure, if that bezel became screen and the FPR was still on the front of the device, then alright I'd take that as a nice bonus.

I'd like the iPhone X-esque (secure) Face ID & in-display fingerprint reader for those times when the phone is laying flat &/or in landscape orientation.

But a second gen Face ID may take care of those situations a fingerprint reader would be needed...which would be ideal, as a single log-in method seems most secure.

fingerprint scanners on the back are awful and I'm glad apple never put it on the back. So Yes I think inscreen Fingerprint scanner should be android's focus. I just don't know how likely it is anytime soon. Seems will cost too much for supply that would be needed

For me.....I would rather have a front facing FPS. Even better if it is
an in-display fingerprint reader. I think they offer the better user experience.

I don't mind an FPS that is on the back mind you.....it just means I always have to pick the phone up to unlock it.

Not a fan of FaceID on the X. For me it lagged and did not recognize my face all the time. Then if I was wearing a hat or sunglasses it faltered.

I have read multiple times that implementing an in-display fingerprint reader has posted technological challenges, also given it’s been rumored the Samsung Note 9 gas ultimately abandoned the in-display finger print scanner because of implementation issues with the OLED panel, user recognition/accuracy rates and power consumption. Not to mention, the difficulty also for those who do add screen protectors as well.

Hoping that if we do lose fingerprint reader on the back that it will at least be replaced with a touchpad on the back so we can keep the gestures.

Why not have both?

Fingerprint Scanner at the back and in the Screen, IMO that's the best setup and covers both use cases.

To answer questions though, yes, still want In-screen FPS.

Let’s break this down:

That article was from March 9th. There have been more recent articles that have said the the Note 9 will have an under display finger print sensor.

Regardless, does that make any different that those other articles that you indicated make any more true? [Rhetorical] They are just a conflict in rumors stating otherwise, more or less; there isn’t any more validity because you posted various articles that there _Might_ be a fingerprint reader under the display.

Also: I think its worth noting Ming Kuo is fairly reliable, in which case even though its my own assertion, I would trust Kuo over garbage sources like BGR you listed.

For the record: You indicated the article I listed was dated from March 9th.

Yet:

This article was posted on _March 22_. So, this article isn’t that much more updated, considering the difference is a matter of 13 days between March 8th from the Kuo rumor. Again, its just a conflict in rumors. Not sure the relevance with this rumor, especially over BGR’s track record.

And:

Not sure how you decided this article was much more “Updated”, considering its dated March 23, Which again is only 14 days of a difference between the Kuo article.

Also, for the sake of discussion: If a rumor conflicts with another rumor just because you three (Not including the “Patent” article ), You’re sources are not anymore credible that this will happen, I have my doubts, but let’s allow August to decide before you Google just random articles assuming its the most relevant information, when you yourself posted multiple _dated_ articles.

This article discusses a _Patent_, Which doesn’t make it the reality of a fingerprint sensor anymore relevant than the information we already know that it might debut. Also, patents in today’s tech world don’t always mean they will be guarantee either, Thats been proven more than once from various tech manufacturers.

This source {Contrived from Forbes}you posted has inaccurate information about Apple stating:

Apple’s strained effort to get viable in-display tech within its production timeline for last year’s iPhone devices. Things didn’t work out for Apple’s project – if indeed it ever existed.”

Which was indeed false and verified by Federighi that Apple experimented with A fingerprint sensor under the display and scrapped it being Face ID was Plan “A” and Touch ID under the display was Plan “B.” There was no evidence stating “Things didn’t work out for Apples Project.”

Also: In this same source you posted:

There is still a race against time to get this technology ready for mass-market manufacturing.”

You might want to check the credibility of the sources you posted, as its not true. Which really doesn’t indicate anything we really don’t already don’t know either about the fingerprint sensor under the display also.

Using trusted locations unlock and smart unlock mutes many scenarios of FP location and phone orientation at work, home or car

However

Given android is more about options I would still like a front in screen option in addition to rear

I find having phone in pocket the rear FP is intuitively used but on the odd occasion when swapping hands a front FP would seem more natural especially when using secure folder that my company insist on

Face recognition on laptops like the MS surface range is very good but I think it would annoy me as a primary unlock on a phone

lol...you should go back to read your article......then when it comes to rumors....two weeks is huge! Heck the next day is huge! Then Kuo is great when it comes to Apple rumors but not reliable when it comes to to Android. His track record is mediocre at best.

It doesn't matter if you like BGR better than MR when it comes to rumors thats just your personal preference and it doesn't lead credence to authenticity one way or another.

Either way we fill find out very soon.....most rumors point to an earlier than usual release for the Note 9. The sooner we get to that date the more accurate rumors will surface. Then as we all know that latest information is usually always the most accurate. We will see soon enough.

So lets break this down....

I am am saying based on the latest rumors....there could be a under display FPS on the Note 9

You are say there will NOT be a under display FPS on the Note 9?

Not sure why I have to go back and re-read the article, I already know what it says, I was merely indicating that it’s been predicted that Kuo casts doubt that A fingerprint sensor will be embedded under the display due to technological difficulties.

More to the point, I don’t think you read through the sources that you listed. Because if you had, one of them wasn’t even a source, It was just referencing a patent which again, patents are _not_ always factual evidence, and the other article You indicated in the previous post actually listed completely inaccurate information about “Things not working out for Apple project finger display”, which to me, isn’t an actual source and they’re posting false information. Again, you might want to read through your ‘sourced’ articles before just randomly googling and posting them.

Then Kuo is great when it comes to Apple rumors but not reliable when it comes to to Android. His track record is mediocre at best.

I agree Kuo has the most reliable track record for Apple over any other analyst in the tech industry. That said, it doesn’t mean just because he made an android prediction, it doesn’t make it any less relevant (Or credible) regardless of what you want to believe. He could be right, he could be wrong, there is no way of knowing until August, but; we can’t overall dismiss his rumor/prediction just because you’re saying he is less reliable when it comes to android.

It doesn't matter if you like BGR better than MR when it comes to rumors thats just your personal preference and it doesn't lead credence to authenticity one way or another.

Read the Bolded:

It Doesn’t make sense. You’re saying it doesn’t matter if I like “BGR better than MacRumors”, its the other way around is what I believe you meant to say , I _prefer_ MacRumors over BGR for reading the latest tech news. I just think BGR is a garbage source in general. I never said anything about “better”, you interjected That.

Either way we fill find out very soon.....most rumors point to an earlier than usual release for the Note 9. The sooner we get to that date the more accurate rumors will surface. Then as we all know that latest information is usually always the most accurate. We will see soon enough

Right, I never stated that I don’t believe it’s not possible, I stated I believe the technological challenges are there given various concerns with power consumption, screen protectors and implementation with the OLED display.

I am am saying based on the latest rumors....there could be a under display FPS on the Note 9

Of course “Could” is the only thing anyone can say at this point if the fingerprint sensor under the display, because nobody knows anything otherwise definitively. Its all variable. If it happens, then I am all for it, because I think competition is a great thing and I’m interested to see how this technology evolves if Samsung decides to venture onto the route successfully with a fingerprint reader under the display.

You are say there will NOT be a under display FPS on the Note 9?

So let's recap.....
you like to argue and YOUR POV is the only one that matters. Oh and you really like the quote feature on MR! lol

Tried in vain to make YOUR POV seem more important than mine becasue well you added more quotes lol
Thanks for the discussion......

Now lets act like grown ups and stop clogging up this thread.......

I'd still like a front facing FP sensor, but only under the screen. Face ID kind of sucks, I mean it's not terrible but it's certainly nowhere near as fast or accurate as a FP sensor IMO, plus Apple idiotically makes you swipe even after Face ID recognizes you. My main gripe with the rear placed sensors is if I can't reach the back of the phone, such as if it's lying on a table or in my car holder. Ideally the FP sensor and face ID would work in tandem.
[doublepost=1525791260][/doublepost]

Front FPS > FaceID > Rear FPS

Miss the X? I'm very highly considering moving from my X to a 8 plus (former phone was a 7 plus). I'm just getting really annoyed with the smaller fonts and because of the dev guidelines it seems like everything is really compacted and hard to read. I also miss the FP sensor. Otherwise I'm resigned to wait another 5 months for the x-plus.
