Do you close your apps after using them, or leave them open in the background?

I close Maps when it’s not in use. Maps chews through battery. I would use something like Waze but I can’t stand the voice.
Yes, GPS is one of the services that an app can register for that will continue to run when it is in the background. Audio playback is another. Those are the only kinds of apps I bother closing manually if necessary. All the rest will just be shut down automatically.

I close everything every night to reduce battery drain while I’m sleeping. A couple of my apps run GPS any time they are open but I don’t close them during the day unless they freeze.
Again, it doesn't save battery to close apps (unless an app gets stuck in a loop or something). Background apps are frozen in memory when they are not in the foreground after a brief period where they are allowed to finish any processes. They are eventually closed by the system if the memory is needed for something else.

They only use battery in the background if you are actively using specific background tasks (like playing music or navigating, etc.). In addition, apps can periodically perform background updates, but those happen whether they are open or closed.

I’m still stuck in a bad old habit of closing down apps when I’m finished using them. Must try harder!

In spite of there being no functional reason to closing apps, people seem to enjoy doing it kind of like a fidget toy. Even if they don’t actually enjoy it, it can be habitual after a while.

I close apps I don't plan to use in the near future. For example, after using Find My and locating my device I close the app because I probably won't use it again any time soon. I leave Safari and Mail and stuff like that open all the time.

I close apps that I don't want my boyfriend to see, for example, Tinder.

Sure because he regularly just opens your phone just to solely go through the open apps and is totally incapable of finding the app being installed by any other means.

That said, I do shut down and do a fresh start every week or two, and before I do that, I close them all just to get that fresh feel after the restart. Also, part of my ritual when I download and install an iOS update like this most recent 16.5 is I close all the apps before the install/restart.
