I'm wondering if you think 120hz will make its way to the entire iPhone range in the next release or two, or do you think Apple will keep it exclusively for the Pro models for the next few releases?

There are already rumours floating about that only 1 iphone model in Sept/Oct 2022 will remain on a 60 Hz display, so this indicates that the regular iphones will be getting some form of faster refresh rate screens (90Hz maybe), or maybe even the full fat Pro motion. At this point, £300 Android phones have 120 mhz screens, so it can hardly be classified as a 'Pro' feature.

Apple will have to bring 120Hz to all iPhones because of competition. Cheap Android phones are starting to get 120Hz, and it does not make any sense for a $700 to not have the feature.

Since there will be only 4 models next year, It’ll be interesting to see what apple does.

2 iPhones 6.1”

2 iPhones 6.7”

Wouldn’t surprise me if only the pro models get ProMotion again next year.

Probably depends if they got enough of other things to make the Pro stand out.

Remember, that is not fact. It’s a rumour. All the sources stating only 4 phones next year have been wrong multiple times.

If Apple is indeed releasing only two sizes, then it may choose to put the same screen on the models with the same size, which meant all of them could get ProMotion. Tim Cook is all about the supply chain.

Should it be left to Apple, it would never put 120Hz on the non-Pro models, to fulfill Tim Cook's never-ending desire to upsell everything. However, competition is here. There are already Android phones with 120Hz AMOLED displays selling for less than $350. And phones with 120Hz IPS LCD displays selling for less than $250. They are already for sale. Next year, more Android models will get 120Hz and even faster displays, and prices tend to go down. Every phone will eventually get it. Apple will probably not be able to keep 120Hz as a premium feature for its $999+ phones for long.

I would guess that all iPhone models will get ProMotion by 2022 or 2023 at the latest.

The 2022 non-Pro iPhones will not have ProMotion. You heard it here first!

It took them X years to bring ProMotion to the pro iPhones. I am confident that it will not take them 1 year to bring the feature to the iPhone 14 non pro models. They will need to continue to differentiate and as it is, ProMotion is one of the biggest differentiators in the line up now - apart from some camera upgrades and the more premium materials.

For those comparing the competition - Apple doesn't easily give in to comparisons like that, as long as they know they have a product which sells and appeals. If not they would've put 120Hz in long time ago - many would say their 60Hz display still felt smooth and till now many say its not hugely discernible.

2023 and beyond is not impossible, but I believe it will take a lot longer than that.

Why "only" 4 models? Currently, there are also 4 models ;) :p

Maybe they'll keep ProMotion another year a "Pro" exclusive feature, I agree. But the year after that, 120hz will be standard on all iPhones I guess.

Non-pro iPads do not have Pro-Motion, so perhaps neither will the non-pro iPhones. it is a currently a differentiator between the pro and non-pro lines for iPads, so why not for iPhones?

I think Apple will keep the 120Hz ProMotion as a "Pro" model feature. If it ever does come to the regular models it will be when there is a new whizbang wowee feature replacing it.

If the iPad is anything to go off of, it would make sense they would keep ProMotion only on the iPhone Pro models.

I'm planning on finally upgrading from my iPhone 7 to a non-Pro 13 this year.

...so for utterly selfish reasons, I hope not! 😆

I really love 120Hz, so I'd really be kicking myself if the next non-Pro has it after I've bought the current one.

Apple is not immune to competition. Apple can, of course, still offer iPhones without ProMotion if it keeps the product competitive.

But look at what happened with OLED displays. The iPhone X had an OLED display in 2017 and, in 2020, all iPhones had it. It is 2021 and many phones still use an LCD display, but Apple has eliminated this differentiating factor between the normal and Pro lines.

It seems to me that a higher refresh rate is being adopted faster in smartphones than OLED displays. Apple may not have three years before all competitors offer a higher refresh rate in nearly all their phones. As much as Apple may be wishing to keep a difference between the normal and Pro lines, it certainly does not want to have a slower screen than the rest of the market, especially not by artificially limiting it for upselling reasons.

I think ProMotion will sadly be "pro" exclusive for at least one extra year. It's an easy way for them to upsell i.e. more revenue and more margin.
For 2023, I think it could be on the standard line up too, espesically given that 120hz is a pretty standard feature on Android market. Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo etc have very good 120Hz models for many years. This could indirectly put pressure Apple to add ProMotion even in 2022.

In short, IMO for standard "non-pro" line-up I'd say :
2022 iPhone 120Hz possible but unlikely to maximise profit$ + easy display supply while 120hz is not yet so popular within Apple devices
2023 likely 120Hz because it will be veryyy standard on Android world + pro users have it from 2 years, they need an other "pro" differentiator as it becomes truly standard
2024 extremely likely or Apple is milking its userbase with disrepect, especilly given iPhone MSRP.

IMO Promotion will be offered on the Pro device only for a couple of years. Apple has no problem selling phones no matter what they offer and honestly 85% of their customers wouldn't know the difference between 60 and 120Hz.. Most of their customers don't need, want or use most of the Pro features and that's why the best selling phone is the regular 11/12/13 etc..

I'd see them locking the feature out only on their SE lineup.

But if the next year truly is the "Notchless" year. I would expect them to delay the release one cycle.

Can't see apple no giving all models pro motion since it's on almost all Android devices even the low end ones.

I think they should bring it to all 14s next year. To me, it’s one of those features that shows just how fluid iOS is compared to other operating systems. I think you’d want to show that across your product line. This is coming from someone who is not enamored with the 120 hz, but certainly understands it’s the future.

Tim Cook is all about them dollars, look at that crap thing they released, that's meant to be a iPad mini, one of the worse screens I've ever seen, they give it a fancy name, Retina display, it's the same garbage screen as previous years lol.

For the money we pay for the iPad Air and the mini has had a price increase this year by $150, we should be getting 120hz and mini led displays.

Mini is getting dropped next year.
