I cannot thank you enough! Been hoping someone would write something up like this for ages now! Thanks! Judging from what you have written, is it safe to say I should go ahead and install iOS 12 when it's officially released?
Yeah 12 is much better than 11. In fact it’s so much better on my X that I’m not even bothering to get the Xs and I get free upgrades with my plan. The time spent gutting bloat and bugs is shown with 12 and reminds me of how Apple used to be. Hopefully they stick with this trend.

** as a reminder when you first install the OS give it time to index. Once it finishes indexing you will see the increase in performance. **

I'm actually coming from 10.3.3, which is why I'm awfully hesitant about upgrading my phone.

My point was the OS is better than 10. It’s actually the best iOS release since 6. iOS has been shoddy since 7 released.

Agreed, iPhone 6. Better stay on iOS 10

Just updated my 6 to iOS 12 and this is the fastest my phone has ever felt. There is no lag or delay for anything. The update process was very glitchy for me and failed multiple times though. I’d recommend updating to iOS 12 after you’ve done a back up!

Were you on 10 before you updated to 12 or 11?

Also interested in this.

For example, in 10 my phone remembers the song I was listening to in the music app at the end of the day (local music stored, song in a playlist of say 100 songs).

In 11 already after some hours, the music player shows up blank and I have to search again in the playlist where I was to continue. Frustrating!

Probably ram management. How is this behaviour in 12 on your 6?

Sure thing!

Ok, so I am comparing two iPhone 7's

A few caveats:
- One is running iOS 12 GM (which should be the same version that is released on the 17th), the other is running iOS 10.2.1
- Neither device is jailbroken or running unauthorized apps.
- One iPhone 7 is a matte black, 32GB device, the other iPhone 7 is a jet black 128GB device
- I did not test low power mode

(PS - that iOS 10 control centre is nice and simple eh?)

So I tested all sorts of apps - stock apps such as Phone, Mail, Safari, Messages, Notes, Calendar, Weather, Camera, clock, app store
I also tested out third party apps such as Google Calendar, Youtube, Google, NHL, EPL, Hue, OneNote, Outlook

And I also tested general UI stuff like app switcher, via both 3D touch and home button [note: 3 home button click shortcuts was turned off for speed], accessing widgets, scrolling, accessing control centre and notification centre

iOS 10 and iOS 12 are *very* similar in performance. A few things load a bit quicker on iOS 10 (and by a bit, I mean less than a second), such as app store and safari webpages (surprisingly, some webpages loaded quicker on iOS 10 than 12 which one would think would not be the case due to increased efficiencies in safari script with later OS updates)...but I must stress it was marginal

typing texts and keyboards popping up, all stock apps, everything else was unremarkable....everything loaded more or less the same (identical speed)

Same with UI, but iOS 12 has faster UI animations which is noticeable when going in and out of folders or tapping the home screen (and singing in with touch ID as well a tiny wee bit quicker due to animations)... CC on iOS 10 is a bit quicker to launch though

I do like iOS 10's 3D app switcher animations more though, it was the one area that felt a bit quicker animation wise, but both 3D touch gestures launch the app switcher at the same time...home button animations (going home, or one click) is faster on iOS 12 due to the quicker animations

Third party apps, the ones I tested, launched the same too

They were very similar in performance, almost identical.

For fun, I also compared iOS 12 on the iPhone 6s to the 7 -> 99% identical in speed

And I also compared iOS 12 on the iPhone 6 to the 6s -> seemingly everything on the 6s was about twice as quick to open or work or launch, same with 6 vs 7

That said, iOS 12 runs great on the iPhone 6
Thank you so much!
I have a 6s runnnig 10.3.3 and I'm thinking about updating to iOS 12.
I have one more question: how is battery life on iOS 12 compared to iOS 10?

It would be really great if people who have updated to 12 could mention what they were on previously. I say this as stating that iOS 12 is great if you are coming from iOS 11, IMO, really isn't saying much. However, saying 12 is great when you came from 10, now that is saying something.

Battery life does seem to drain a bit more on iOS 12 vs 10. I haven’t noticed a huge difference but then again I’m not using either device as my daily driver. That said, iOS 10 is marginally better for battery - keyword being marginally, as they both seem very similar overall in terms of on screen time

I’ll have to do a Geekbench or something for the anecdotes but I think it has to do with how iOS 12 ramps up the processing speed right away for tasks

All beta testers were pleased in thier reviews of iOS 12 that I’ve seen on YouTube or read on the net.

Speed performance is happening tomorrow.

Samsung 9 speed test beat the X, same test done again on iOS 12 beta vs slightly faster Note 9 over S9 shows the same X now beats even the Note 9.

Also try quitting apps by pressing the home button at the same time on both phones. The home button on iOS 10 would be faster.
