If they want us to upgrade they should at least release a 27 inch iMac at this point.

Just jumping in here. I have as well a 27" 2017. Full 64GB Memory and a 1TB disk. Started to clean up the hard drive, because it was getting full, but managed to get 50% free. I mainly use it for photo editing with Lightroom and Photoshop and it is a bit slow in starting up these programs, but when it runs it is working fine. Just gutted that there will be no more updated and even more that there is no 27" model anymore.

I am considering to upgrade to a Mac Studio, but one of the cheapest models will set me back 2'400 and then I still need a monitor with camera for another 500. Advantage is that I can deduct it from my taxes, since I will be using it for work as well.

Although it is working fine I know that the Mac Studio will be a considerable upgrade. Just do not know how to convince the Mrs. that it will benefit her as well while watching Youtube vids. :)

If you meant Software Updates as in features & patches then it will end by late 2024.

If you mean Security Updates as in patches-only then it will end before 2027.
Isn’t this based on the OS you’re running? I understand the age of the machine will limit your OS of choice but the updates themselves are based on the OS version, not directly on the machine physical age.

The I guess there is Open Core for newer OS. But then you aren’t stuck using Open Core to reinstall the whole OS when there is an update?

But... realistically, you have another two years of security updates for Ventura and before web browser vendors and others drop Ventura. During that time, the OCLP people are likely to get Sonoma working on your 2017...

... so... why not wait a year or two and see what happens? I continue to believe that something will be coming from Apple with a 32" 6144 x 3456 screen... whether that's a new external monitor or an "iMac Pro", who knows.

Full 64GB Memory
And the only way to get that anymore is with a Mac Studio. Even the M2 Mini Pro only goes up to 32GB.

Apple's strategy seems to be to not try to compete in the hobbyist market. They will sell a stripped down iMac or Mac Mini at prices low enough for schools, but no way to upgrade them after the fact.

I’d rather have 32GB of Unified Memory than 64GB of RAM though. And this is coming from someone with 64GB RAM in a loaded 2020 iMac 5K.
