Do you think the S3 mini is meant to directly compete with the iPhone 5?

I mean some features Samsung and it's fanbase were making fun of apple for not having is 4g, bigger screen, less ram, smaller memory. Now the s3 mini has no 4g, smaller screen (same as new iPhone) about same ram as iphone, 8,16 gb with removable storage up to 32 (mid price iPhone). It could always be Samsung trying something new. And I'm well aware the iPhone has 4g now.
So do you think makers like HTC are going to make more 4in devices now?

No, it's to capture a demographic that feel the Android phones have gotten too large. Something for everyone if you will.

It's a mid-range device meant to compete against the 4S, if anything, and against HTC One S, the RAZR M, the Lumia 820, HTC 8S, and all those other mid-rangers.

The mid range does not compete with the high end.

Samsung are taking the name of a highly popular device and using the recognition of that product to sell another handset. A bit naughty IMO considering they different classes of handset but that's Samsung's prerogative .

I just wish "high end" specs and 4" could co-exist in the same device on Android.

Would really have loved to swap my One X for a S3 Mini if it matched its brothers specs in everything but screen size.

They are trading on the success of the main SGS3 undoubtably, with the S3 Mini. More a marketing opportunity to push middling range hardware on the masses on the back of the success of its brother, than a direct competitor to the iPhone 5.

Yep that's how I see it. I can see a lot of phone shops pushing this handset onto people who think the SGS3 is too big for them, but thinking they are actually getting the same phone albeit smaller screen (because it shares same name & branding) when in fact they certainly are not.

Something for everyone, as long as you don't want a real SGS3 in a 4" shell. :(

Are any U.S. carriers actually carrying this device? With so many downgrades in specs, I can't imagine it would do well here. I know VZW won't carry it since they only offer smartphones with 4G now.

This phone isn't coming to the US. Look at the frequencies it will be using. It is pointless to even bother comparing the 2. The iphone 5 is better, but the S3 mini will sell more in the developing world as a cheaper phone with mid range specs.

If the US gets a version it will have to have LTE.

I don't like the fact they are using the S3 name on it. Aside from that it fits in well with what Samsung has always been doing, a high device and the mid and low.

Samsungs business model is and always will be to flood the market. A lot of manufactures do this, apple is the big name anomaly with only one device per category. They make it work though. They did an amazing job with the iPad and very well with the MacBook but I just wish they'd step up the iMac so I could justify buying one.

The mini needs to be distanced from the galaxy s3 as much as possible, its not even close to what S3 is. This is marketing's way of trying to get a buck out of the Galaxy name.

Why couldn't Samsung do what Apple did in shrinking the device and making it better?

I guess they will have to resort to creating semi tablet/phones to get higher power.

Is Samsung trying to create a record on the number of SKU's they have? At least HTC is getting smart and reducing the number phone models they have. Too bad they're struggling. Same with Nokia. Would be nice if one or both of them provided Samsung some competition in the Android/Windows space.
