The first 10.5 I bought back in June was way to yellowish and true tone made it 10 times worse. The device also gave me a headache and the screen wasn't as sharp as my air 2 so I returned it. Just bought another 10.5 last week. The screen is fantastic! I keep true tone and night shift on! Something must have been very wrong with the first one I had.

I was also quite disappointed with the 12.9 inch 2017 screen. It slightly yellow, but mainly the contrast and colors are just too washed out compared to my other monitors. I expected the new Ipad to have much better colors than my old Ipad 3. Maybe the Ipad 3 has slightly less saturated colors than the 12.9 2017 model, but nowhere near the difference, I would expect. I think the contrast is worse, not better. It's not a horrible bad screen, but I think it should be much better.

This also happened to me when I bought the Ipad 3. Everywhere I looked they had yellow screens (opened 4-5 different ones in different stores). Then I ordered one from apple, and that one was much better. Now the panel lottery starts again?

Watching a film on Netflix and viewing the same film side-by-side on my old Pioneer Kuro one can see a distinct yellow tint and severely crushed blacks and slightly blown out whites compared to the perfectly balanced colors on the venerable Kuro.
That could be a software issue. When watching full screen video iOS adjusts the video levels in a way that clips highlights. I don't know what you mean about crushed blacks. They aren't nearly as dark as a good plasma TV, but there should still be contrast... you should be able to see details in black areas.

It is mainly the yellow display that is bothering me. Contrast is quite good actually, after having tested the Ipad some more. But colors are a bit dulled due to the slight yellow color of the display. But it seems a problem with almost every generation of Ipads. Some are more yellow and others cooler. I will be returning mine and hope that a new batch will be better. I tried a 12.9 2017 64GB WIFI version and it was a bit worse than my current one. Especially at angles, the display was very yellow.

This shows how yellow the display of the 2017 12.9 model is compared to the 2015 model. He seems to have true tone OFF for the entire review. He also shows that toggling truetone on or off does not remove the warmer tone of the display.

What the general direction of this thread says regarding a rebasing of colour temperature may be true but it doesnt explain why the 12.9 screen is MUCH yellower than the 11 inch and dimmer. I have been into store 3 times recently to buy an ipad pro including today. Each time I have compared screens for all pro’s and come away not buying one because all of the 12.9 pros have colour balances that are far too prone to yellow and are definitely dimmer than the 11’s. as a photographer this is a big thing and has stopped me buying. All screens had brightness on max and truetone off. This is very un apple and when with a keyboard and pen you are taking about an 1800 pound tablet, its poor.
Apple used to pay so much attention to getting this sort of thing right and such things as the touch points, these have fallen to tight accounting in my opinion. I am typing this on my 5 year old Air 2 still in its perfectly functioning leather smart case. It is a tactile and functional delight, but Apple now sell uncomfortbale hard plastic covers with sharp edges for 3 x the price and they are not particularly nice to hold or use. Of course its more profit, but I fear that strive for profit is losing focus on too many of th important little things that created the whole Apple ethos. Sonplease sort the screens, even allow us to dial in colour temp so everyone is happy and please bring back nice Apple covers.
