Do you think the Volcanic cloud will affect US Delivery of iPad 3G's?

Ok, I made a poll of this discussion. Let's see what everyone has to say on the poll when you have time to vote.

When I Made this thread I was not concerned about the flight path over the ocean but rather getting out from China before the cloud got to that area of China if the weather changes and the Volcano still keeps erupting.

They still have to be flown into Europe.

They do? Why? I don't remember the wifi models going anywhere near Europe en route from China.

This is one of those threads where I can't figure out if it's me or the thread being stupid.

Because the OP never ficking said 'to the US' ffs. Less of the 'stupid' comments please, there is a world outside the US.

Less of the thinly-veiled anti-Americanism, please. It's not our fault your launch got delayed.

The OP is in Nevada and states so in his sidebar profile, so it's a fair assumption he meant US shipments.

You are right, there is a world outside the US...but not for the iPad...Bwahahaha!!! ;)

I was watching the news and they mentioned that some Tokyo, Japan flights were delayed due to the volcano. I think that is close our China city where the iPads ship out from. We need to keep an eye on this as this volcano could be a problem for us who live in the United States. It could be the destination the flights are going to is why they are delayed. I did not catch the whole news cast.

Maybe I heard it wrong but if anyone has more information feel free to comment on this thread.

For what it's worth, a friend of mine ordered a new mbp a few days ago, and in the last 48 hrs it has followed the usual route from china to Alaska that the ipads will likely take. It has been processed through customs in anchorage and is still on track for the original estimated shipping date.

With this volcano situation, I think anything is possible at this point. Yes, iPad 3G's could be delayed. Heck, that second Iceland volcano could erupt as well and affect the entire northern hemisphere. Or it will all die down before the 3G's ship and we will be fine. From what I'm reading in the news, even our brightest scientists have no friggin idea. But based on the eruption history of this volcano and the one next to it, the potential certainly exists that we will see the bulk of air traffic in the northern hemisphere shut down for months on end. So be ready for anything.

Yes, a side bar that doesn't show on an iPhone. And Gwynn.....anti-American? Grow up. Also couldn't give a **** that the iPad is delayed, I'm not a spoiled brat demanding my toys. I also assumed he was in Europe as I figured most people would know where in the world their country is located.....my bad.

On the other hand, maybe it will speed things up?

All those unused planes (that couldn't land in Europe) could be repurposed for iPad shipments,

I believe the flight path goes through europe so therefore as there is a no fly zone over europe there could be no flights. I think thats the point in question. no one is saying the planes have to land in europe. but the cloud is in the altitude band that the planes fly in.

Not the U.S. they don't (which is the original poster's location). They go eastwards from China, stop in Anchorage, AK and then on to various hubs in the contiguous U.S.

This. They travel over the pacific and don't go anywhere near Europe.

My friend's MacBook pro is in Tennessee this morning. To recap, it left China *after* the ash cloud problems began, travelled the usual (air!) route to Alaska, and if anything is on track to beat the original estimated ship date of Wednesday. You can probably find lots of similar anecdotal info in the MacBook pro forum. I'd paste in the tracking detail, but for some reason safari on the ipad is not letting me copy text off the iship page.

I'm not saying there might not be a domino effect later on, but as of right now, the likely route the iPad 3Gs will take for the US seems unaffected.

I blame the earthquake for zero availability of iPad cases in Apple Stores or Best Buys.

Careful, you know what you do when you assume something right? :D

This is true, but you have to remember this, A plane does have to take off and has to clear the airport they are flying from. This means that city they are taking off from can not be affected in anyway by the volcano or it could affect the iPad shipments.

Right for now, we are in the clear. But they are expecting further eruptions later this week coming. That is the one I am worried about.

That is why I was hoping Apple would take note of this and maybe move up the shipments of the iPads sooner than end of April. :D

I was looking at UPS site and UPS posted this on their site. Not to say that our iPads would ship UPS again but it is a possibility.

European Volcano

Service Update

Due to massive clouds of ash in the skies over Northern Europe from the eruption of a volcano in Iceland, air space in a number of European countries has been closed, with a resulting disruption to UPS air traffic. Shipments to and from Europe will likely experience delays.

UPS is closely monitoring the situation, which is changing from one hour to the next, and will make adjustments as needed to our operational network to best serve our customers.

UPS service guarantees do not apply when transportation networks are disrupted.

FED-EX POSTED THIS ON THEIR SITE.

Volcano Eruption in Europe

Service Update

A volcano eruption in Iceland has filled the skies over Northern Europe with significant amounts of ash. Due to this ash the airspace over many European countries has been closed. FedEx Express® shipments to and from this area have been delayed. Additionally, because of this situation, FedEx Express is not currently accepting shipments utilizing these services to Europe:

FedEx International Express Freight® (IXF)
FedEx International Economy® Freight
FedEx International Airport-to-AirportSM
FedEx International Premium®

The situation remains very fluid and we are closely monitoring the airports. FedEx will resume flight operations as soon as possible. Additional information will be posted on fedex.com as it becomes available.

Consistent with the provisions of the FedEx Service Guide, the FedEx Money-Back Guarantee does not apply to FedEx Express shipments affected by events of this nature that are beyond the control of FedEx.

Continue to check the status of your shipments on fedex.com or contact FedEx Customer Service at 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339.

So it is something we should keep an eye on. It may or may not affect the orders going to the United States shipping from China.

Possible. Eyjafjallajökull has a sister volcano that seems to erupt in sync. Over the past 1,100 years, Eyjafjallajökull has erupted four times: in 920, 1612, between 1821–1823, and in 2010. Each of the first three of these incidents preceded an eruption in the nearby subglacial volcano, Katla. Katla – a much more active volcano known for its powerful subglacial eruptions and its large magma chamber, much larger than that of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano system – has not shown any unusual activity, such as expansion of the crust or seismic activity, in 2010. Some geophysicists in Iceland support the notion that the recent volcanic eruption at Eyjafjallajökull may trigger a second eruption at Katla.

ok maybe the danger is over for now, At least I hope so.
Actually that is quite a distance based upon the world map but winds
do carry ash far sometimes. But I guess we have a small percentage that we will be affected.

This threat has cracked me up from the beginning to the point that since it started, I've been blaming everything bad this weekend on the volcano.

As a final note on 'my friend with the MBP', his new MacBook Pro showed up in NC, USA two days earlier than the estimated shipping date, from China.
