I hope not, but probably.

After being on these forums for years, I’ve realized I’m definitely in the minority though...I hated the squared-off look of the 4/5 and think the rounded 6/7/8/X is the best.

Unlikely. The new iPads Pro have a thick enough bezel around the display to allow Apple to hide USB-C hardware in a 5.9mm body, but on iPhones (even XR) the bezel is much thinner so the hardware would need to be sandwiched underneath the display (and backlight in the case of LCD devices like the XR).

The lightning port on the XR is already offset (closer to the back than the front of the phone), and knowing Apple's adversity to making things thicker, I don't see how they'd be able to fit USB-C hardware in that space.

I think it more likely iPhones will eventually not have any traditional ports, but instead perhaps a smart connector of some kind. For now the Lightning port's low profile keeps it going on the phones.

Good point very well made! Couldn’t agree more.

Cant see that happening really. Lots of cars connect to their phones for work or for music. Not everyone uses bluetooth. It would make a ton of people pretty mad if they didnt include some sort of charging/connectivity.
Let alone getting rid of a port for no cables which would decrease how much money they make on damn cables. So nah they probably wont go fully wireless...

Are you kidding? Apple will do whatever they want, like they always do......are you forgetting the headphone jack?

In your example, they will make the change and car manufacturers will be expected to fall in line.....for older cars, 3rd party Bluetooth devices will be used and I’m sure apple will make plenty on producing their own in car connection kit

A headphone jack does one thing. The actual lighting port does a lot more then just Audio. They can take that out and not get that much backlash even though they did. If they got rid of an actual port that charges and provides audio/video it would be much bigger than a little 3.5mm jack.
Not everyone wants Bluetooth audio for high quality audio. Still don’t see it happening sorry.

Ya it was the worst experience. So I always pick mine up on launch day at 8am at Apple. Never a problem

you can preorder on a contract in australia too with apple store, they pretty much do exactly the same thing as carriers except with BETTER customer service since it's apple's exceptional core team. the only reason going to carrier is that there is no physical apple retail store nearby.

I don't mind if they keep lightning, but for the love of god make it transfer at USB 3.0 speeds.

USB 2.0 speeds in 2018, seriously...

One of the reasons Apple went with the curved edges was comfort. When they went bigger with the 6 and 6plus, I recall Schiller saying something to the effect of their test units of 4.7 and 5.5 inch iPhones using the iPhone 5 style was uncomfortable to hold.

I don't think they're going back.

and why would they go to flat design for a much larger tablet which you hold...? They dropped the curved back angle and chambered edge for a straight edge.

Obviously I have no inside knowledge. The iPad and the iPhone are completely different animals. What works for one does not necessarily work for the other. The iPad is held differently the the iPhone.

If I had to guess, the iPad's new shape allows for more interior volume. They could put in a bigger battery.

Still don't think the iPhone 5 design is coming back anytime soon

The iPad took cues from the iPhone directly. The last style of iPad had the chambered edges for a long time. It also had the curved back but no longer has it.

I like the current design. If you want to see what an iPhone 5 design pushed further would look like, look no further than the Oneplus X. Oneplus were a bunch of idiots to discontinue it because it was a great design in a nice compact size.

It has a bit more rounded edges than iPhone 5 so it actually feels very good to hold.

My thinking is the iPad Pro apes MBP styling to draw the parallel to laptops so I doubt Apple will do that for their phone range.

I am not sure if we will ever see the iPhone 4 style flat/block style phone again, but I do feel that we will get usb-c and my gut tells me the notch will be gone.
So design will stay curved from now on? I feel like apples new boxy style look will look more “modern” now that they can do that style of design right with the technology nowadays.

Apple won’t go USB-C on the iPhones for one big reason.

Royalties!

Everything made for the lightning port (except the Chinese knock offs) has to be licenced from Apple and that is a massive money spinner for them.

iPad kinda had to go USB-C because Apple are pushing it as a computer and so it needs the port to connect proper computer peripherals but the iPhone as a mobile device doesn’t need such a port.

Whilst it would be nice to have a universal port for every device Apple won’t get their usual cut from the accessories manufacturers and they won’t like that.

I think it's more of an issue with ergonomics and comfort. Yes you end up using two hand for holding iPhones, but you primarily pick up the device with one hand and grip with one hand, whereas the tablet, you pinch it more and so the edges can be sharper on the iPad. Also, with the way the are pushing the commercials for the iPad show more people are using a keyboard and using a pencil on a flat service, but less time actually holding the tablet.

They did it on the new iPad Pro. I find chamfered edges ugly though. Moreover the fact iPhone 5 had that design would make it kind of look outdated.

The iPhone 5 was my first full purchase of a brand new iPhone. I've always liked the design.

I would love if the plus models took on that design, especially if Apple made the camera flush with the housing.

Are you sure it’s chamfered? From the video they posted and the hands on pics I don’t see the flat cut edges of the 5S. I see rounded edges.
