Using my PIA subscription, I was blocked by Gmail and Bank of America on my last biz trip. PIA's tech support said that large service companies such as these block the PIA IP addresses "to prevent fraud". I don't understand why the very sites that I want to access with the highest security would block a service that is supposed to make connections more secure. :-(

For those using NordVPN on your iPhone, you might want to check and see just how anonymous you are on the web by going to https://whoer.net. It will probably detect that you are using Nord as your proxy etc., amongst other things (with Safari as well as Chrome). That means you can be traced. Run the same test with PIA, and it shows anonymity at 100%.

Edited to add: Same results on the Mac.

I use Nord and I've just tried this - I'm horrified at what it reveals. Are there any other VPNs that should be avoided?
I use nordvpn and just tried this, getting 90% anonymity on iPhone and 100% on mac. Switched servers on iPhone and now get 100%. My biggest issue with the nordvpn iPhone app is battery drain.

I started using a VPN a few weeks ago. I used to pay for T-Mobile One + so that I could steam HD videos on YouTube.

I decided to try a VPN service to see what would happen and found out it allows me to stream these videos in HD. Supposedly, this should also allow me to tether at full LTE speeds but I've not had that happen so far.

If nord supports it, try using the OpenVPN app. I use it instead of my VPN suppliers native app and it doesn’t consume a lot of battery.

I see this thread is being revived for some reason.

Anyways my usage reasons are still the same. There has been some changes in setup. My Usenet provider (Giganews) has a VPN service included now (VyprVPN) which seems to work pretty well in most locations. They have servers all over the world, so wherever I am if I am using an open network I can connect to their closest servers. Also Netflix and other content providers do not seem to be a problem.

There are places in the world that do block commercial VPN services such as the one above. For those I use Cisco AnyConnect to connect to my home network. There are Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android apps so very convenient to use. Although paying for server and client licenses isn't that great, I have found it to be a very robust solution. Makes sense that many enterprises and institutions use this. I have a symmetrical gigabit internet connection without any real bandwidth caps so I can access my NAS [-es] wherever I am plus I can avoid may censors when the commercial services and protocols are blocked. It is also highly unlikely for places that do block commercial VPN service providers to block my own router.

I have my own VPN on a Linux box at my home. If I don't trust the open connection, I just connect through that.

Which came in handy on a vacation last fall when many newspaper sites wouldn't allow access from Europe.

Yep

There are some services that are not available in my region, so I use vpn to get access to 'em

Sometimes.

It can be a chore with Pokémon Go, so if I’m doing a bunch of raids, I’ll turn it off.

Nord doesn't have an OpenVPN app for iPhone. I initiated a chat with Nord support the other day re the battery drain and they had no solution, saying it was unavoidable due to the amount of encryption being processed for all traffic. Apart from the battery drain, I've found the Nord app to be extremely reliable.

Just checked. Nord does support OpenVPN.

Sometimes.
If I need to pretend I'm in another country.
If I want to check prices anonymously for hotels and flights ( prices can go up if you are in an expensive area and using a Mac).
If I'm on a public, unsecured network: train, airport etc.
If my ISP has a problem and the servers are saturated: happens sometimes.

I've had Torguard and Private Internet Access (more than a year each) but I'm currently using ExpressVPN and they are the best so far for me

yes, freedome vpn.

i wouldnt use any public wifi (e.g. hotel/restaurant/... when travelling) without a vpn.
