I was just reading the thread about people who are furious that the iPhone may not include iChat support. Personally, I've never found a need to use IM on my phone (even though my phone supports it). What about all of you - currently, do you IM on your phone?
 
i use it

i use yahoo im at work all day long to communicate with co-workers in other offices and clients. it's much simpler then getting on the phone every five minutes. now if only i could get them all to switch to AIM so i could use ichat instead of adium.
 
You forgot a very obvious option:

No, because it's implemented terribly on my phone. If iPhone implemented it smoothly, hell yeah I'd use it.
 
Back in the day, I used to on my Blackberrys and later on my first batch of Windows Mobile phones all the time (AIM). I haven't on the last 4, and I don't see myself doing it in the future. No point, really. If somebody doesn't want to call me, they text message me.
 
I use it when I'm away from a computer and I need to be on AIM.. I wish it worked better, but I make do...

No IM isn't a deal breaker for me when I choose a phone, but if I'm paying so much money for a measly 4 gigs of music/video/photo space, it better have all the extras.

The thought of reading someone use UR instead of you're/your makes me ill.

Out of curiosity, what 'need' do you have to be on AIM. surely if someone needed to contact you/you need to contact someone that badly, you can call/text.

I do agree if it was implemented well it could be useful, but i currently dont have a use for it on my phone.
 
not on my phone, i don't. if i got an iphone, i'd probably want to use ichat or meebo (via safari). the reason is that there are some people i communicate almost exclusively on aim. they're often at work and can't take a phone call. aim works well in this regard, and it is easier than text messaging.

What siurpeeman said. Friends at work, seeing if someone's online so I know they're awake and I can call, and sometimes I just get really bored in the middle of a lecture and feel like talking.

It's not so much that I need IM on the phone, as much as I'd expect it to be on my $500 iPhone when it's on phones that cost 1/10th the price.
 
I'm confused - with IM on your phone you mean text messaging (rather than audio or video) through the phone's data connection, yes?

If so, wouldn't that be a lot more expensive than simple txt messaging - especially if data prices in the US are anything like over here.

actually text messaging in the states i believe is more expensive in europe. either way ther are unlimited packages for both texting and data. im goes to someone sitting in front of their computer rather then their phone. so when i am out and about and logged into yahoo via my phone, my associate can message me from her computer to ask me a question. it's just anotehr alternative to staying in touch.
 
I'm confused about how the AIM program on my RAZR (T-Mo) works. I don't think it actually does use the data connection. I suspect it actually might work through text messages. The data services icon does not light up when I use AIM.

Mostly I use SMS, though. But I talk a lot more than I SMS. If SMS means I get to pass little updates and love notes with my girlfriend who isn't able to speak on the phone during the day, and bide time till we talk at night, then it works for me. ;)

I think somebody has seen that Cingular/ATT commercial one too many times. :D

IM on my phone is too much of a PITA. I stick to texting. I text more than I talk on the phone.
 
i text a lot on my phone, around 1500 sent messages per month, and i always wondered who uses IM in their phone, i still don't know a single person that does. But t is stilla cool feature....i thinkkkk...
 
I text more than I IM, but that's just because I'm usually not bothered to log in and deal with my not-updated buddy list. Everyone usually has their cell phones on near them anyway.

But on the iPhone, if there was no iChat, you could just use something like Meebo, right?

I think it's in the help menu or something (I have the same phone) in the AIM section. Each IM received/sent/log in/log out counts as one TXT.
 
i do occasionally .. i certainly hope the iphone has IM on it rather than just SMS. it's going to be a pain if it doesn't ... i also hope to see it have 3G .. if i pay $499-$599 for a phone, i certainly want it to have what my razr v3xx (3G) has already.
 
I've never known anyone to use the feature. It's much too fiddly to mess around with a phone keypad to do it. To me it's a lot easier to get to a computer that has internet access and a proper keyboard than it is to fiddle with my mobile. Especially as it's damn slow when I have tried to IM using it.
 
No. My PPC doesn't have any kind of wireless (from 2001) so I can't use MSN or anything like that.
 
I IM constantly with my treo. It would be tragic if the iPhone doesn't have IM support. I guess meebo would work through safari.
