i'm old. the eyesight's going, the fingers don't work, my coordination ain't what it use to be...

actually, just hate everything about the phone except send and receive. Even listening to voicemail is annoying. My voicemail for years said, "don't leave a message." People left messages anyway. what can ya do?

so, to stay on thread, no, I don't instant message on my phone, although if verizon changed their fee structure, it might be marginally more appealing, more like a choice between death by sedative or death by strangulation. Neither option is great, but if you had to make a choice...

I flashed my w810i and now I don't have AIM. Not a big loss considering it took too long to use. If I had ichat on a phone with a full size keyboard I would use it all the time.

My Blackberry 8700G's full QWERTY keyboard makes it really easy to fire out AIM messages and so forth very quickly, and helps pass the time when you are, for example, sitting on a bus or train for a long time...

It certainly isn't a deal breaker, but I'm a Blackberry fan through and through, so I don't see myself losing that capability any time soon.

I would if I could. I don't feel that paying data charges for IMing is as good as text bundles over here.
3's X-series is an exception but that wouldn't be very useful to me at the moment.

I IM through JiveTalk on my Blackberry pearl all the time. I can't use AIM on the computers at work so this is how I keep in touch with friends, since i can't take personal calls or emails at work either.

IM over mobile phone (via MSN, AIM etc) is very popular in the US deaf community, and has been for about 5 years. Usually uses Sidekicks (with full QWERTY keyboard) and a decent data tariff.

It's a bit non-existent here in the UK as the Sidekick / good data tariffs weren't available here till recently.

I had the HTC Wizard (qwerty/Windows Mobile/MSN) last year, and tried out mobile IM a few times. It was nice, but I didn't leave it on as I had only a 8MB/month data tariff. it was about £5/month for 8MB, and I wanted to keep that for accessing my email / emergency useage.

Now, I've just brought the HTC Hermes, and switched to T-Mobile, who offer 'unlimited' data (actually about 3GB/month) for £7.50/month, and I plan to leave IM (MSN) on pretty much all the time. It's due to be activated today - can't wait :)

Smart man! Think of all the money you save over time.

I cringe when I look back at how much I've spent on cell phones and usage plans over the past 10 years.

i'm right there with you. 10 years at roughly $50/mo ? $6k. to think about the plunge i'd make if i purchased an iphone with its obligatory data plan kinda scares me. i don't know if a phone plan is really worth that much.

there are IM applications for my treo, but i don't use any. SMS is sufficient for what i do - just quick messages with family & friends periodically. not many of them use IM much anyway, so SMS is easiest. a lack of IM on the iphone is not a dealbreaker for me at all.
