Is there anything wrong with placing UV filters and the lense hood on? Is this pointless or do they each have a benefit? What is the main purpose of a UV filter? Thanks.
The main purpose of a UV filter is to block out ultra violet light rays that would produce a hazy effect on film photos. This usually occurred on clear, brightly sunny days. With digital cameras, the sensors are not as sensitive to UV rays and are not subjected to the haze except at high altitudes.
Somewhere in history, a salesperson decided to push UV filters as "protection". As you can see this is highly debated, but I only use filters when I need an effect produced by them. I would only use a transparent filter for protection when there is blowing sand, dirt, or dust in the air (desert, hurricane, tornado, etc.). The front glass element is already very tough and anything strong enough to break through a filter will damage the lens and glass.
