Trying to decide if I need more than 16gb. I don't plan to watch much movies on it so 16gb may be enough, but I do want to use it as an iPod so I can get rid of my Nano. I have a 32gb iPhone but I don't want to use that as my music player due to battery life.

Yes. I have about 8gb of music on mine. It's going to be close to 20 once I stop playing around.

I plan to put it in my man purse. I have my MacBook Pro in it now but I hope the iPad will take it's place.

I don't use it as an mp3 player, as in something i'd listen to on the way to school or on the bus, but I listen to it when I'm home, browsing the web or something.

Playing music on the iPhone has an incredibly small effect on the battery life. When I got my iPhone I couldn't believe it at first, you can barely notice it. I'd much rather play music from my iPhone than an iPad. The iPad is huge and not very easy to get out of the bag to change tunes etc.
I've had the iPad for 10 days and I've used it for music for maybe 90 minutes. The only time I use it for music is in the background while doing something else with the iPad, like reading a book. I have 900 or so songs loaded and I've probably played 15 of the songs at least once, so far.
Short answer: no, I don't use it as an iPod, and I doubt almost anybody does, but I do use it for minor background music playing.

I don't use my iPad's iPod function all the much. I use my iPhone for that.
The 16 GB iPad is plenty big enough for my purposes. I have all of my music on my MBP, and a very large portion of my music on my iPhone. I selected a bunch of favorite albums to go on the iPad. Also, I don't collect movies- I use Netflix and other streaming apps/sites for movies/tv shows.
This makes a good opening for a bluetooth based remote. Say in the $19.95 range. It would only have to have the old style click wheel control. I wonder if it could be produced cheap enough to make it feasible.

Nope. Zero music on my iPad. I keep it all on my iPhone. I do have Pandora & I Heart Radio on my iPad though.
I put one playlist on mine, because i was somewhere and realized some background noise would be nice - and I didn't have headphones for my Touch with me.
My 14yo daughter has everything on hers, and is using it over her Nano at the moment most of the time for music. She likes the interface i think (she has a 3g nano, the square one), and normally listens either in bed while working on her writing, or in the car.

I do keep a few audiobooks on it. Anyone else having a problem with the ipad not remembering position in audiobooks? I don't get the "xx minute remaining" thing or anything. My audiobooks do have remember position set through iTunes, appropriate media kind, etc.

Only time it's used as an IPod, is when I am out surfing the web, writing emails or ims, or writing in pages. To me, that is what the IPhone is for. It is an IPod that I can make phone calls on. IPad is more of a visual device because of the larger screen.
I have around 30 GB of music on it, but the iPod app frustrates me. It's sorting albums by release date, even though they're sorted alphabetically in iTunes and on my iPhone, and I can't figure out how to change that. It's also handling metadata differently than iTunes. Anyway, I do use it as an iPod around the house, but on the go I use my iPhone.
I put a few thousand songs on it just to have some music, but I think the form factor is wrong. I mostly use an iPod instead.
