I have about 6,500 photos and they’re all stored in iCloud. I don’t backup anywhere else and if anything were to happen to iCloud, I’d lose everything. So I’m wondering if I should start using Google Photos for extra insurance. Would this be a good solution?
Yup I use both google photos & amazon for backup. Can never have too many backups!!

I always have at least 1 android phone, so I have google photos too. When I take pics with my iPhone it automatically goes to google photos also.

If safety is your prime concern then sure - it is a good backup solution.

If privacy is your concern then remember your GPS location as well as time and date the photo was taken are also stored and you'd be giving google that. Essentially a map of everywhere you've been that you actually cared about.

Food for thought.

Google already has my home and work address.

95% of my photos are screencaps taken at work or home and the rest are pics generally taken at Colado's Coffee and Crepes or Walmart.

It should be fairly easy for Google to find me.

I use Google Photos and once a month I back up on an external HDD.
I don't use icloud.

I use Google Photos to backup but it doesn't automatically go to Google Photos - I have to remember to open the app, so that it backs up.

I stopped using iCloud (for pics/vids) and started using google photos only since it’s free. I also love being able to search using the google photos app.

I use iCloud as my primary storage, 200GB tier shared with my family. Running low so a 2GB upgrade is due. Photos also backed up using Time Machine on my MacBook.

Up until recently I relied on OneDrive as my secondary offsite, cloud photo backup until I found out the OneDrive iOS app was transcoding my HEIC photos to .jpg for backing up. Despite HEIC being reasonably well established and supported by iOS since v11, OneDrive still has an issue with it. Beyond Office, Microsoft really do seem determined to fumble the ball at every turn. No sign or suggestion that the iOS OneDrive app might support HEIC any time soon.

I’d kept Google Photos around using the free ‘high quality’ tier, and recently switched to Original for backing up from my iPhone. As well as supporting HEIC natively, Google Photos is a pretty impressive app/service, useful for sharing photos with Android only relatives. I’m tempted to pay for the 100GB storage tier as I’m down to <2GB free on my account. Could just do with a way to clear the older ‘higher quality’ photos and have them back up anew at ‘original’ quality.

Seconded turning of background app usage and only backing up when both the app is open & in use, and then only via WiFi.

I tried to but for some reason every time I install the app and enable automatic sync, it tries to pull every single photo from iCloud to upload (or match I guess?) on Google Photos even if it has already been uploaded in the past which makes my phone run out of space cuz 90 GB of photos obviously don’t fit on a 64 GB device. If I enable it on my iPad it tries to do the same crap again

I use Google Photos in addition to my onsite NAS.

I have always prefered it that way but might give iCloud a shot sometime since so many of you seem to be satisfied with it.
