Was wanting to fiddle with it but I know no one that uses it..go figure.

its what I usually use. All of my buddies have aol or .mac accounts, so it works great for me.:p

Yeah, but....EWWWW...AOL? I have had an aversion to that from day one.

Most my business/chat is done on IRC or MSN, Yahoo. Maybe I should get an AIM account if I am going to use this. *sigh*

I use it cause it's all macish.

Plus, very minimalist user interface. Although, I am missing tabbed conversations. Perhaps in iChat 4.

You think they would make it more appealing to use. Maybe better compatability with the other protocols.

I prefer iChat over the other AIM clients for Mac and PC. I like being able to look at the messages of friends without having to click on their name.

They added jabber support to iChat and if you set it up right you can talk to people who use msn, yahoo, and google.

I use it almost every day.

I video chat with my wife from work and use IM at work for quick questions from my staff. Faster than the phone and it works with AIM and jabber.

Trying to figure out the ports I need to open on my router now, for video and audio.

Open ports 5060, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403 for UDP and 5190, 5297, 5298 for TCP and UDP.

I use iChat AV all the time. As a matter of fact, it's always running. Like TDM21 mentioned, I love being able to see my friends' away messages under their names. Also the iTunes and Mail integration is nice. It's also a nice way of finding new music artists. :)

i use it all the time too, but what is the itunes and mail integration that you are talking about?

You can set your iChat status to display what is playing on iTunes.

And in mail.app you can have a column showing buddy availability.

Can someone who knows that audio with iChat works, give me their chat name? I am having trouble getting it to work with someone. Not sure whos having the problem though. I figure if I can chat with one of you, I will then be able to blame him. ;)

Care to explain how? I would really appreciate only needing to use one IM client.

I use it primarily for keeping a running conversation going with another person I am developing software with who lives 700 miles away. And we use my iDisk along with the built-in file sharing in iChat to quickly share mods and builds. Keeping an open line using that is a heck of a lot cheaper than a phone call. Also, we occasionaly do the iSight thing. iChat is a NICE little tool.

I use Adium but I want to try this iSight 3 way technology at some point. :(

i think this has more to do with the other protocols not allowed to be used by Apple.

i have read somewhere, that using jabber(?) a plug-in or something could emulate msn & yahoo im clients and it would work with iChat.

anybody has any experience with this?

edit: btw, here are some links:

I don't use iChat, because everyone else uses MSN.

When I became a moderator here, I started using Adium, as the other mods (at least, the ones in the US) use AOL.

I mostly use Adium, but semi regularly use iChat!

It is IMHO the best audio and / or video options around (Skype goes close for quality for audio - but terrible interface!).

I just wish they would open it up more... outside the USA very few people use AIM. And I'd love video chatting to be simple with PC based bretheren.

iChat is too cumbersome, bloated, and ugly to pass up Adium on a nice skin. Not too mention the million protocols and services it supports...
