I don't think Apple is releasing another airport unless they plan to have a new standard with it.

The UFO Airport had G, the square Airport had N, this current tower Airport has AC. It probably won't be at least a few years before they release one with 802.11ad, with a maximum tranmission rate of 7Gbit/s.

The current Airport is more than enough for 4K youtube streaming, if that's what you're concerned about.

Apple isn't 100% compliant wit the Wifi Alliance as it is. This is why it doesn't play well with some routers. Speed wise its no more than average. But if its for Apple devices, recommended to make it just work.

That's why I went with the other brands first. They were cheap, and configureable, but it is not stable. "It just works" is true for Apple. I don't have to hassle with the router randomly disconnecting my internet and having to deal with it and resetting it. I don't remember having to reset it since the router the day I got it.

About being 100% compliant, I haven't seen problems about it. All that matters is I get the speed I want and reliability. Most of my other hardwares are Apple anyway, and I haven't gotten problems from my non-Apple hardware about the internet connection.

A recent upgrde of my Broadband to a 1 Gb FTTB system really shows up the problems with some of the wireless technology around. Here is my real world experience of speed tests under various scenarios.

Hard wired cat 6 - 600/650 Meg
Apple AE previous model with N operating on 5Gig - 100/110 Meg
Power line extender rated at 500 Meg - 50/60 Meg

What was really surprising was the poor performance of the Power line adapter.

I bought AP Extreme 6 months ago and I'm using it since then. It is configured as router for my network wifi and wired. Since I configured it, I didn't touch it. It is working and I don't have to think about it at all. Couldn't be happier.

AE is not the fastest, but its fast enough. If you use Apple gear its the best choice as Apple's wifi isn't 100% compliant with the Wifi Alliance. You will get issues with some routers.

Apple's own Time Capsules/Airport Extremes/Expresses support ac, and are great.

Apple's routers also provide the easiest setup I've ever experienced with routers, and the best performance when bridging between each other for extended networks that I've ever seen.

Can't go wrong with the return policy either, give them a go!

I have two Apple AC Time Capsules and an AP Extreme AC, at our house. As other have said, the setup is great. The Time Capsule function is nice as well.

However, I have friends who use other models, and some other units are outstanding. I have a buddy who also used to have three Aps, who replaced them with one of the Night Hawks (I think that's the one?). he says that he now gets a much better signal and better throughput, throughout his property.

Apple tends to wait a long time before updating their network gear, and their radios/antennas aren't as strong as some other brands. Just saying this area may not be Apple's strongest...?

It has to do with the external antennas on the Nighhalk! A cool easy DIY trick is get some cardboard, good aluminum foil, decent glue and a good round roller to get out wrinkles in the foil! The place the cardboard in water for a couple of seconds to get it good and damp! Then place that card board into of a parabolic (like a satellite dish) shape and let it dry into that parabolic shape. After the cardboard is dry take some good aluminum and use enough to cover the hole cardboard shape. Then take it out for a second! Now get you glue ready to cover the whole cardboard and quickly put the aluminum in and use your roller to take out all the wrinkles quickly! Let that glue dry overnight to let it set.

Then the next day put that parabolic shape bring your router to certain point away the wall. Problem solved!

What you described does work. This site even has a plan you can download to trace out the shape of the parabolic reflector. I actually made one once with an old router I had to improve wifi on one side of the house (at the expanse of coverage on the opposite side) and it really helped.
