Probably not true, and if it were, its doubtful they'd do anything to shut down the millions of jailbroken devices.

Yeah, they wouldn't shut down the devices. But they could certainly take the warrenty off of them.

I did notice that in iTunes 8.1, after I jailbroke my iPod Touch 2G, I restored from a backup. iTunes then went into a long "Verifying iPod Touch..." process during the first sync. I didn't remember that from my past restores and redsn0w lite jailbreaks.

I seem to recall that there is some Apple website where you can put in the serial number of your device, and it will tell you when your warranty ends, so if this is true, someone who installed 8.1 and is jailbroken should check that website to see if there warranty is still intact.

For the record, I think this whole thing is complere bull&*it. After all of Apple's PR debacles last year with MobileMe and iPhone 3G launch, i HIGHLY doubt they would pull a stunt like this.

I think this is BS. Isn't it illegal for Apple to send information from your computer to Apple's server without permission? Isn't this just like keylogging or spying on someone's computer then?

This rumor comes up EVERY time there is a new firmware or itunes version.

Its BS pure and simple.

Interesting read. But yes, I do believe that technically would be spying? I never read the iTunes User Agreement, I wonder if it has changed/modified.

Yeah, I don't really believe it either. I mostly just wanted to see if anyone here had noticed their warrenties going away after synching in iTunes 8.1.

Not to stoke these flames, but I just thought I'd mention that I just synced my jailbroken iPhone for the first time since I upgraded to iTunes 8.1, and I had an extremely long "Verifying Surely's iPhone" period before it would actually sync.

I did a MRF search, and this thread came up.

Let me start off by saying that I don't think that iTunes is sending Apple a report telling them that my iPhone is jailbroken. Does anyone know what the whole 'Verifying' thing is all about? I've synced my iPhone to my MacBook hundreds of times since I bought my iPhone. What verification is needed?

Same thing happened for my newly jailbroken iPod touch 2G. I'm extremely curious about what is being verified during that step.

Ok, I have to weigh in here, too much FUD. :)

I know no one reads them but someone should check out the EULA. Every time I have upgraded iTunes, and launched after the upgrade, I had to agree. If there is any stipulation stating that Apple will now receive a report after "verifying" your device, it would have to be in there and by clicking agree, you accept this. If this is not expressly written or presenting itself well in the new EULA, I would suggest that someone fire up Wireshark before launched a newly updated iTunes and see what packets, if any, are being sent to Apple.

Isn't it a little warm under that tinfoil hat?

Again, maybe before you made your hilarious (and I mean hilarious) cliche comment like that, you should have actually read my post above.

I will reiterate that I don't think that unauthorized information is being sent to Apple.
I just want to know what "Verifying" means. You can take a look at the attached screenshot as proof that it happened. This "Verifying" step went on for around 10 minutes and the diagonal lines in the status bar moved very slowly. This has never occurred before in over a year of owning my iPhone, and has never occurred to me in the months since I've jailbroken. My syncs/backups have been really quick (under a minute) prior to this particular sync and ever since this particular sync.

yeah this story says pure grade a bull:eek: all over it!

this should be closed

I see. The "newbie" title means that you're in charge here. I guess I've been confused the whole time I've been a member here. You should be closed. :D

Here's the screenshot:

Verifying happens every time that you connect your iPhone or iPod touch. You just never notice it.

If this was the case you would've heard it from other people seeing Little Snitch popping up requests to send the data out.

No, I pay attention. It does not happen every time I sync. If it did, do you think I would be asking what it means and why it did it for 10 minutes?

I just synced right now after reading your post, just to see if I was missing something, and it went from "Syncing" to "Backing Up" and then to "Syncing" photos, applications, etc, and then the sync was complete. No "Verifying".

I recall iTunes saying verifying iPhone before the update.

Way too many paranoid people around here... First off, you can't trade in an Unlocked iPhone unless you have an AT&T phone number. At least, not at my Apple Store anyway. They always have you verify your phone number. In other words, if your iPhone is U/L'd on T-Mobile, you were screwed any way. Deal with it. If you have AT&T or an iPod Touch, I doubt Apple really cares. I've heard people that have said their phone is J/B'd, but with AT&T. If it's a hardware issue, they'd exchange it and say, "This one isn't Jailbroken, though." Come on. Apple's a cool company for the most part. (Or those employees didn't really care and just restored it after to cover their tracks.) If Apple wants to know that my iPhone is J/B'd, let them. It's already a year out of warranty, so I don't really care. Only thing that concerns me is the speakers blowing out, and if they did that, I'd just get the G1, and Apple would lose a customer. Either way, it's a Lose-Lose situation for them, so they'll probably just leave it alone, since they're still selling units.

(Sorry about the rant. I'm just tired of all these insane paranoid people.)

Awesome rant?. Doesn't apply to my post though.

Do you have an answer to my question?

What is being verified?

That's all I want to know.

Sorry. That was more to all the others than you. I have no idea what is sent. I turned off Little Snitch, because I thought iTunes could be trusted. Oh well. :p

I checked my warranty status and it's still valid so I declare this thread BS.
