Lets see what everyone's thought are on the capacity of the iPhone.

I'm not entirely sure myself if i can fit a decent fraction of my iTunes library on there along with all my photos, contact, messages, etc.
 
My needs for a phone is to be able to hold:

Contact details
A few images
one, maybe 2 mp3s for ringtones
the odd calendar entry.

So I'd say yes.
 
i don't need to carry all my songs with me. my ipod shuffle taught me that. so yeah, both 4 gb and 8 gb will hold enough content to my heart's delight. :)
 
I find my 8GB Nano just fine for my music collection. However, the iPhone is supposed to be for music and video (as well as the OS, which probably takes off a fair chunk) so buying a 8GB iPhone would in some ways be a downgrade if I actually wanted to use it's video playing functions. I'm waiting for the next higher capacity, which I guess would be 16GB (and could be here by the time the iPhone is released in the UK).
 
phone is a phone, not an external HD or a portable media center .. I know we are being told that iphone is just that but come on ... i wouldnt want to carry my entire 30gig collection of mp3's and 20+ gig collection of movies on iphone (if I ever get one that is) when there are passport drives and ipod 5g's purpose built for carrying mp3/movies and files!

its a phone .. and 4/8 gig is more than enough for a phone. (my 6300 has only 137mb and i sitll have 110mb free)
 
I was hoping the iPhone would be a viable replacement for my ipod. But it won't be :( It just doesn't have the capacity. I thought apple looked towards unity of products and less clutter by having 2 which kinda overlap (ipod and iPhone). Plus, Steve Jobs did say it was a Brakthough internet device (which I'm sure it will be), an excellent phone (which I'm sure it will be), and an iPod, which I'm not too sure about. It will have the excellent new iPod interface and functionality with intuitive design but little capacity :( Ah well, i'm sure I'll love it. Or maybe since apple announced it, they have realised that people need more storage, just like they did with Apple TV last week.

My fingers are crossed.
 
I have over 800gb of media and would never want to have to sift through all that, no matter how luxurious the interface is.
 
I still use an iPod Mini, which I've had 2 and a half years, and the capacity of it (4GB), has never been a problem for me. I tend to be quite selective about what music I transfer onto it, and even with (only!?!) 900 songs on there, I still find myself skipping past a lot of them.

The iPhone will be fine in terms of capacity for my needs. I'm sure I'll put a few vids on it as well. Again, it'll be pretty selective, and I'll only put whatever I feel like watching on the way to work in the mornings.
 
I have an 8.5 GB music library, so the 8 GB version will be fine. I'll leave just a few albums off that i've heard a lot and put some newer ones i've purchased and switch it up. Can't wait!
 
I currently have a 4 GB Nano and it works just fine for me. I took a seven-day road trip across the US with it, re-syncing it only once along the way, and I didn't feel cramped by the storage at all. 1 or 2 GB of songs will do just fine, especially with a device I'll be syncing daily, pretty much. My Smart Playlists are set up so that I always get a mix of good and new songs, and that ought to keep the music selection on my iPhone interesting.

What I'm wondering is how much of the storage (if any!) will be taken up by the OS and browser cache.
 
remember...the original ipod only had 5gb...granted it didn't have video on it, but still. In regards to music, they've sold plenty of nanos, minis and shuffles to prove that not everyone needs 30gb of space.

I have about 32gb of music and I've got every bit of that, plus a bunch of movies, tv shows and pictures on my 80gb video. I don't necessarily use all of it regularly, but I like having it available. That is what the ipod is for, however, I don't think I'd need my entire music, photo or video library with me at all times.

If you have as much media as I do, look at it as a way of keeping your favorites with you at all times, rather than a portable solution for the entire library.
 
my 8gb nano holds my songs just fine, but if I add music videos and movies I dont think so. but that wont stop me from buying one!
 
I don't think the expectation is that we'll just sync all our movies and TV shows to iPhone. I have a 160 GB library of those, but I don't need all of it all the time. I think I might put a few home movies and short funnies on iPhone (until they get old) and otherwise just sync what I think I'll be watching soon.
 
I'm sure hacker will find a way to solder a new memory chip in place of the old one, wouldn't be that hard but the hard part would be saving a backup of the os.
 
with flash memory prices coming down so fast I would expect iPhone 3-4g to have plenty of 'chips' on-board .. just sit tight and pray we don't have another newton on our hands (most probably we don't)
 
Seeing as the iPod nano is Apple's best selling iPod, I have to figure that 8GB will be enough for *most* people. Although there will be people that fill it up, I think the phone's software and stuff will fill up a gig or so at most, leaving you 6-7gigs for music/photos/videos, which should be plenty for most people. I'd still like to see a 16GB second generation iPhone with 3G capabilities though.
 
Theoretical question:
Let's say a 'friend' is buying an iphone. And let's say their music collection was obtained via limewire (or some other devious method). If this friend moves their music to their iphone, will they (cough) be able to page through their music like Jobs did during the presentation? I'm guessing this isn't going to be as cool as his presentation...

You can already do that with itunes...so yes. No matter where you got your audio file from, you can always enter the ID information and choose album art.

You would more than likely need to make a good number of changes. From the people I know, those who get songs using "devious methods" usually have completely unorganized music libraries with lots of missing data.
 
8GB isn't very much when it comes to video. I just have to balance what I put on it.

12GB would be a much better number for me. This would allow most of the music I listen to, 2 movies and at least 2 full seasons of TV shows that I could alternate in.
 
I think it'll be real close to enough (for now, anyway).

My best guesstimation is that I can fit:
  • Preferred iTunes carry-along library (~3.5 of 6GB) (music only)
  • Entire Address Book (~500 contacts)
  • Entire Safari bokmarks (eh. a few hundred K, tops)
  • Entire iPhoto library (2.25GB)
With enough room left over to throw in several TV shows or a couple/three movies.

That being said, I would like to see 8/16GB models at this price point. That, or an SD Card slot. Sumpin'!
 
More than enough. Even though I have a large media library, I only feel the need to carry about 1GB of music, 1.5-2GB of podcasts and an audiobook. Watching videos on portable devices doesn't really interest me, screens are too small and it runs down the battery too much.

Gah, I forgot about thinking about the space required for Photos. I am only going to have a few times on there. I have like 4GB of photos on my AppleTV :D
