Considering the new iPhone 4 g and most netbooks macs etc have a web cam it really bugs me that Apple left it off. With the almost 2 million ipads out there and the 4g iphone coming out I can imagine all the possibilities with video chat.

I was supposed to have a web cam, canceled toward the end presumably due to shortages of the cameras, and the fact that they wanted to put it in the G4 iPhone first. The current version has a recess already in the frame for that camera, and all the necessary software hooks for camera support are in OS 4.0.

Anyway, it will surely be in the G2 iPad just in time for Skype to mature, and for Apple to introduce iChat Mobile. People have to have a reason to buy the upgrades, don't they?

Really doesn't bother me at all. I cant think of many times that I need to be on a webcam when I am also not near a real computer (or laptop). It would be a bonus if it was there, but I don't feel anything seriously missing because it isn't there.

Since when is there shortage of cameras?

I have a web Cam on my Laptop and on my Desktop, and I have had both computers for over two years and I can still count the number of times I have used the Web Cams to talk to other people on my hand. The only use i have gotten out of the cameras is when my GF was out of town we used Yahoo chat to see one another and my Son is out in Cali, we used Gmail Video Chat other than that I have used both of them more as iCam security cams on the iPhone and iPad. I am not into chat roulette so I am good without an camera on my iPad. Even if they made one that could attach i would not buy it.

My experience is the same as Oman, above. I've had a MBP for almost 3 years (AppleCare expires next month...) and in all that time, I can count on one hand the number of times I've used the built-in camera for anything.

Quite frankly, if they put a camera in the 2nd gen iPad I would personally prefer they put it on the backside (so I can use it to actually take photos) rather than on the front, as I don't expect to see myself doing any videoconferencing anytime in the foreseeable future.

Nope and I'd be interested in the % of folks that use them. I think this is a features bloggers or reviewers would write about, like multi-tasking that just are not used by most people.

Yes. I can think of uses for each but not by the masses. In order to advance technology, let's face it, it is moving slow, we need to build critical user mass not fringe features.

Doesn't bother me at all. I have an iSight on my MacBook Pro stationed with a big LED screen to serve my webcam needs.

Nope! Don't miss it one bit. ;)

Dude, your display pic had me fooled for like 5 seconds. I was like what kind of a fly is this, its not going away no matter how many times I blow air on it ! :D

It bothers me very little. It would be a plus, but seems like a minor plus.

However, the constant threads about it bother me :)

Wish I understood what you guys want to do with a camera on an iPad that's so important ... other than the red herring that is video conferencing

I'm actually not bothered at all that a camera isn't on the iPad, front or back. The idea of it seems nice, but I rarely use webcam on my MBP—and I've had it for 3 years. The only time I've ever used it is for Photo Booth moments and and iChat. Webcams just seem like they belong on laptops or desktops for the stability.
Now a front-facing camera on the iPhone 4G is a nice idea… but I'd doubt it would ever come more in handy than taking photos of yourself and Skype. So for me: iPhone maybe, iPad no.

Since when is there shortage of cameras?

WAS a shortage of cameras. Insufficient numbers to accommodate the devices Apple wanted to put them in in the timeframe they wanted. If they'd put them in the iPad, there wouldn't be enough to put them in the 4G iPhone. Dunno if it's still a problem, but I'm sure the front facing camera will show up in the next round of iPads in 6 months or so.

It seems like a natural but it won't affect me since I have one on my MBP. Also, I plan to upgrade to the new iPhone which is supposed to have one.

What would be cool is if a third party can create a camera that can face both ways by using the iPad's connector.

I use "Camera for iPad" now to make the iPhone a remote camera for the iPad. Maybe with some clever SW, the new iPhone serve as a remote iSight camera for the iPad.

Yeah, it does, a lot. It was enough of a factor that I decided not to buy an iPad until the next iteration appeared, presumably with front-facing webcam.

Then I made the fatal error of playing with one at the Apple Retail Store, and my wife agreed to take this one when G2 arrives.

I'm still hoping there will be an accessory webcam and app.

videochat is the most over rated thing ever.

however, if anyone would have wanted to do it, and ipad would have been the best thing for it.

i prefer the cleaner front bezel though.

I'm sorry, but apple never stated that is was suppose to have a camera.

Post a link to this. Where did you get your info.

I love the smell of ********.

And no, I don't care that it doesn't have a web cam. I won't use one on an iPhone and I hardly use the one on my Mac.

Honestly, yes it bothers me because i feel like they did it for the sole purpose of selling more ipads next year when they finally add it. but i bought one anyway just because its not a feature i use often enough to care. but i do love to ichat and skype on my macbook every so often. i feel like if they added the cam to the iphone and ipad a lot more people would use it, even if right now you dont think you will. but oh well, thats why im selling my ipad a month before the second generation comes out and getting a new one. meanwhile, i LOVE this thing!
