I was happy it didn't have a webcam--saved me from having to find a witty, appropriately sized sticker to cover it with.

No it doesn't bother me because I played with the Camera A/Camera B app to control my iPhone camera from my iPad and basically gave the iPad a camera. Because of the way the iPad is normally held while using it, what you get is a huge view of the inside of your nose.

The only way around this is to hold the iPad high up in front of you at almost arms length, which you can only do for a short period of time.

The iPad is too large to be a very useful camera, and for the reason stated above will not work very well as a web camera. Maybe that is why there is no camera on it.

If it had one I would end up trying it out for fun a couple of times but don't think I would use it often, especially if it made my double chin look even worse :D

Plus wouldn't holding it up in front of your face to chat get heavy after a while (unless you had a stand)

I've used it on my lappy once, for my log in pic. So....not in the slightest.

Since I am not selling my laptop, no. I actually hate my webcam (always worried it will flick on) save ONE use. If it was not for this one, fabulous use, I would want it gone all together. When my spouse and I are separated by travel we use the webcam to wish the kids goodnight. They are young enough to still be bedazzled by the sight of us on the computer.

Considering the new iPhone 4 g and most netbooks macs etc have a web cam it really bugs me that Apple left it off. With the almost 2 million ipads out there and the 4g iphone coming out I can imagine all the possibilities with video chat.

I think that perhaps the iPhone 4G will work on a 4G network(when available) and that will make video conferencing possible. 3G network video streaming is hit or miss at best.

I am sure that the next iPad will work on 4G networks and have a camera.

Yeah, it does, a lot. It was enough of a factor that I decided not to buy an iPad until the next iteration appeared, presumably with front-facing webcam.

Then I made the fatal error of playing with one at the Apple Retail Store, and my wife agreed to take this one when G2 arrives.

I'm still hoping there will be an accessory webcam and app.

For any of you out there who are waiting for the second generation iPad. I would not be to sure that there will be a camera. I doubt that most people want one. I'm sure that apple did an extensive amount of research on this. It obviously wasn't left out because of cost. There's probably a very good chance that you will be holding out for some feature that will never materialize while the rest of us enjoy our iPads.

I do think there might be enough desire for a cam for someone to make a third-party cam that hooks to the dock port, if Apple allows.

Such a cam could be a lot more versatile to one built into the chassis, although less elegant to use.

I doubt I'd buy one, but I could see the use for it. I have trouble seeing the use of one built into the iPad itself, not that I'd say no if I got it for no additional cost. It would at least allow use of barscanner type apps.

Agree.

Having a webcam built in would be nice. A work around with the dock would be good. However, the lack of a webcam will not stop me from purchasing an iPad.

Not at all. And I really hope that the next models will not have it, but I'm 100% sure that we will see the iPad 2G with a front-facing camera. Maybe even in the fall.
I'm always under the impression that people can spy on me, even if it's off and that the light is off as well. lol

If anybody goes to the trouble to spy on me through a portable device's camera, they're welcome to spy on me until they pass out from boredom.

Seriously, people don't get that no one gives a crap about their lives lol. All they want is your personal info, which they wont obtain through your webcam. So you should be more concerned with connecting to a random wifi network in a public place. People are too funny, paranoia makes me laugh...

While I agree that the likelihood of being spied on is pretty remote for the average person, it can be done. Seeing how it's possible to remotely activate the microphone on your powered off cell phone to listen to conversations, it's not a stretch to think someone couldn't do the same to your web cam.

While that may very well be true, you would still know they're doing it. Any power to the webcam activates the light, which is an intentional safety precaution.

Does anyone know if the SDK allows someone to write a program using the iPhone as a webcam for the iPad. I know there are programs out there to use to take pictures where it links them up but actually using your iPhone in something like a video chat. If not, I figured a lot of people would like a problem like that. I would be willing to pay a few bucks to be able to video chat on my iPad by propping my iPhone up in front of me..... clothed of course :)
