A faster processor will greatly impact the battery life so I vote no.

Because the 3GS's processor has so terribly affected the phone's battery life.

I say yes, better hardware, because the faster the processor gets and the more RAM the phone has, the less reason Apple has to deny us multitasking.

Since software is getting more bloated (on every platform), hardware will always have to evolve to make sure we don't notice it.

So I voted yes, the next iPhone should evolve hardware wise.

IMO you would be surprised how much apple is slacking in the battery department...it's crazy how small some of these 2200mah battery are now adays. Quick list I would like to see for hardware no fancy terms;

1. 512MBs RAM
2. 800-900mhz proccesor
3. 2200mah battery
4. 1700Mhz band for service on carriers such as T-Mobile
5. 802.11n maybe scaled down a little so it doesn't destroy your battery life
6. Slight redesign nothing crazy

software wise I thought I would throw this in here:
1. Ability to turn off GSM and ONLY have UMTS (3G) on. Why? Because in some countrys they only have 3G like Canada's CDMA to HSPA+ converts or Japans softbank/docomo and no need to waste battery (if you need to roam on another carriers (E)GPRS just turn it on).

2. No auto refresh when you switch back to a tab in safari...lost many long posts to this....FFFUUUU Apple...

well.. if you havent noticed. Apple has been very quiet lately.. I forsee something very big in the near future.. Their has not been any new iphone betas. Even with all the problems that people are experiencing right now with battery issues and wifi issues etc. I would not be surprised if apple releases 3.2 out of know where by the end of the year. i believe apple will give us alot of things that we have been asking from them in this update. including more customization, and even multi tasking on the 3gs..

For you all that say their will not be a new iphone next summer.. Are you crazy?? of course their will be!! I believe the 3gs can not survive another year with competition rising. Apple is going to release something this summer that will take the world by storm AGAIN! And all the other carriers and cell phone manufactures are going to be back to the drawing board.

I don't think so. It'd be nice, but will we actually notice it after the 3G S? Probably not. Recently tried out Trism on the iPhone 3G S and it runs like an OpenGL ES game (which is saying a lot considering Trism is like five large views stacked on top of each other with like 10 other smaller views stacked at one point).

Of course larger capacity is inevitable, better battery life, 802.11n, etc.

If they were to release a higher resolution screen then mayyybe the specs would be bumped up.

5 megapixels camera and 64 GB are things that will come for sure I guess. 3 is fine, but 5 is better. 8 as a maximum, more megapixels don't work very well (yet) with todays lenses.

I guess also some new chips: better for the environment (like Apple always is promoting) which consumes less energy. In that case the battery will last longer, even if they use the same battery as in the 3Gs but of course they will update the battery some how so much longer battery life. WiFi 802.11n (like now found in the iPod Touch even though it isn't activated yes).

Radio will come to the iPhone to for sure, maybe through some update or with the new iPhone. Multitasking once has to become true, and I think there's even little hope for flash now it's asked more and more by people. Sure, HTML5 is great, but for the timebeing I want some flash.

Flash is never coming to the iPhone so you can forget about that. Apple is doing everything they can to push h.264 as an alternative. I do agree with some of the specs though. What I would like to see from hardware:

-64GB
-ARM A9 dual core with maybe PA Semi power saving design
-upgraded PowerVR graphics chip
-5MP camera
-upgraded video to Apple's iFrame format
-matte or aluminum casing (if possible)

This not including software which I would put multitasking, a better API for apps to communicate with each other, lockscreen info, and a better PNS system in order of importance. Right now I consider the software more important than the hardware.

Seriously, how can that happen. I use my iPhone all the time and when I go to bed I've enough battery left for the next day.

Well I don't just play Pacman on it or admire all the pretty icons. I actually use it as a phone, and take non-stop business and social calls on it all day long. It never, ever lasts and I'm always cut off on my totally flat $1000 phone before I even get home from work.

What we need is a lighter and more stable OS revision. Do a Snow Leo type of update. Break from features and make the OS more leaner and eliminate bugs. That would make a lot of people happy.

But that's not what snow leopard is... it's a port to 64bit and new API's like opencl and grand central. And a new compiler, Clang. It's probably the best OS release they've done in terms of features.

Anyway, all I really want is.
64GB
More battery life
Open app store without any censorship or filters. And access to the OS. I want there to be no need to jailbreak.

What I expect:
Hardware wise? A doubling of the screen resolution, increased storage capacity, an improved camera, and louder speakerphone.
Software wise? A 'tweaked' notifications system, FM radio, more iMovie-esque video editing options.

Like an iMac, I see no reason to alter the form factor for changes sake.

The design would get boring for a phone. Computers are ok if there are no redesigns. Phones may get bored out.

I like this idea! I still miss 1.1.4 because it was so very crisp and stable. The killer apps for me really haven't changed: safari - email - maps - PHONE

Le sigh... I miss 1.1.4.

Yet 3.1.2 has been pretty SNAPPIE for me.
