Heck my daughter's old daycare provider bought a Base MacBook Pro 2 years ago and still doesn't know how to do anything but surf the net and use Pages (which she hates). When I told her that there was Microsoft Word for Mac, she looked at me like I was crazy and mentioned she wouldn't know how to install it anyway....

Believe me... she doesn't know how to use Word for Windows either. If you know how to to medium-complexity tasks in one app, you're capable of learning others.

What brings people to the Apple eco system are iPhones and iPads. Thats the hook.

Strangely I'm at the opposite end of that spectrum. It is a Mac desktop computer that is the hook for me. And since the mid range headless desktop Mac is still non existent I keep using my old Mac and keep waiting.

I'm certainly not going to buy Apple products I don't need just to fill time while I wait for what I do want to buy.

I'm real close to giving up and getting a mini and buying a miniStack MAX to go with it. At least it matches fairly well so won't look too out of place.

What I would rather have is desktop Mac tall enough for two drives and an optical drive WITH docks on top for charging iPhones and iPods. Which I will consider buying AFTER I get a computer. Some ergonomically designed ports (meaning ON THE FRONT) would be nice too.

Everyone says "I buy a Mac because it works!"
Then Apple designs the things to make it harder to get work done.

Stupid Question.

He's the CEO of Apple. Of course he knows about a product sold by his company. Dumb question.

LOL:)

But quite honestly I'm not sure that he sees a path for the Mac Mini in the future of Apple.

I've never understood this statement. Why would any adult desire to wast their time sitting in a coffee shop, just to "show off their computer?" That is lunacy. Some people think that if you don't do photography or videography, then buying a mac is merely for status. That's not true at all. Some people just like products that WORK. I can't count how many PC's (windows based) that I've owned over the years (several of which I built myself) from the x86's to current windows 8 machines. and NONE of them run like my macs. My macs WORK. I turn them on, they boot up super fast, they aren't loaded with malware, trojans, and failing hardware. They WORK. And to me, that's worth the price of admission. Period. So if someone sitting in Starbucks next to me thinks I'm there only for status, then that is their problem. And, quite frankly, they are wasting WAY too much of their own time trying to analyze my reason for owning a Mac. Again, i own them because they work. No other windows box I've ever bought/built/owned has been even nearly as close to reliable. :)

Totally agree with what you say, I have 3 in my home. 1 runs a weather station, another is the wife's and mine my desktop machine. The mini is flawless, use it for remote connections to the office and gateway servers. Citrix runs great AirPort extreme router fast and reliable never drops. Mini entry level machine hardly think that is so. For myself it is everything a computer is all about, power & small footprint that does the job, over priced ..... no way best bang for the buck.

Wont find one of these at the old Starbucks, but it would piss them off if you parked it and sat down for some surfing and a cup of mud...

That's so great you get such robust use out of the mini (a weather station > this amateur weather geek is smiling.) I appreciate posts from long time mini users like yourself as I am finally making the switch to the mini shortly after Apple upgrades them.

Whether you like it or not, most do not want desktops anymore.

Two years back, I would totally have agreed with you. I hadnt bought a desktop for myself in over a decade and was quite happy with my latest laptop. Then the iPad came into my life and things stopped being so cut and dry. Im now working toward a new vision:

Desktop - does the big jobs with maximum pixel space
Laptop - does bigger jobs and is sort of portable
Tablet - maximum portability

In this new model, the laptop is a generalist that does neither job as well as the old/new specialists.

Yes Apple don't forget about the Mac Mini! It is the perfect desktop computer design for those of us that don't need the more expensive and delicate laptops.

Common sense should dictate that Apple lowered the price of the Apple Server to encourage people to use the Mac Mini as a headless desktop for the modern home. So, the Mac Mini is not going anywhere...it will remain an option for the avid Mac user.

Maybe the new mini is already done but it didn't occur to him that it hadn't been released yet. He's just a human being like you and me.

Exactly what I was thinking as well. Obviously the new mac mini is already done but they are obviously delaying its release because of that stupid mac pro...it is just another way for apple to up-sell. You can now decide to get a 2 year old mac mini or a shiny new mac pro for a tad more money. Apple is the king of up selling. Gosh I hate apple and their tactics, but I just can't get myself out of their ecosystem because I would not want to get windows, especially windows 8. Chromebox seems very intriguing to me and will see what will come out in March.

Not a SINGLE sale of the Mac Pro lost. Once people realize that, the timeframe for the mini release makes perfect sense.

Are you implying that a new laptop/consumer grade Mac Mini would somehow canibalize a new workstation Mac Pro.

Actually, if the mac mini does indeed serve as an "entry" into the Apple ecosystem, then they make MUCH more money from people who buy a mini selling them all kinds of other Apple stuff to a person that without the mini would not be an Apple customer at all. I am sure Apple knows this. They seem to be anything but idiots.

And I am very sure that for every person on this Mini Fan Club forum there are at least 1000 out there that love the mini but do not frequent this forum.

I am a huge fan, recent convert, and waiting almost patiently for the next version. I could care less about an external redesign, as long as they do the inside right. The current external design is as close to absolutely perfect as I have ever seen.

I actually like the previous version better, looks wise. The current one looks kind of cheap, IMO

Top spec mini, versus lowest spec Mac Pro - yes. You seem to think that every Mac Pro is purchased by someone who is going to use it to its full potential. All you have to do is poke around these parts to see folks who only use a maxed out 15" MBP to surf the web and word processing, etc... Many folks simply over buy. Apple is holding off the mini, until the Mac Pro is out in the wild, maybe even for a little while. Apple will not let a single person realize that, for their needs, the updated mini would work, versus splurging for a Mac Pro.

Again, not all Mac pros are bought by people looking to setup render farms.

While that is true, your logic fail here is that those who over buy and pick up a maxed out MacBook Pro are doing so even when a brand new basic MacBook Pro is available are they not? So those who buy a Mac Pro even when not needed are going to regardless if there is a new Mac Mini right? because in your scenario about MacBooks that is what is happening today!

What I am saying is that regardless if there is a cheaper option, people will buy too much...

My thinking is that when it comes to Macs, people often overbuy - like looking at a base Mac Pro, when a maxed out version of the mini would do.

For these folks, if the comparison is between a brand spanking new Mac Pro and a many year old mini, then they would absolutely go Mac Pro. But if an updated mini were available, they could and would begin to think twice. That is what apple will NOT allow to happen - period.

So expect the updated mini after the Mac pros are shipping, and probably shipping for a solid month or two.

What I am saying is that regardless if there is a cheaper option, people will buy too much...
and especially when the cheaper option is a couple years old tech. But a brand new option that is a viable alternative? Then there are those who would go with the lower price - not all obviously, but some.

Mini with the current batch of SSD is an excellent machine. Just upgraded a 2010 SATA I Mini with Intel SSD, and yes, no more beach balls. The most current Mini with 6GBps SATA connection must be supersonic compared to my oldish edition.

So if people generally over buy, again why would they buy a maxed out Mac Mini over the Mac Pro? In one instance you are saying people go max out everything and over buy, but in the next instance you are having be fiscally responsible and purchase a Mini over a Mac Pro..... Your thought process contradicts itself.

Even if a new Mac Mini was released today, how many sales would it really take from the Mac Pro anyway? The only Mac Pro model it would even "sort of" compete with is the Base Mac Pro, but how many purchased that model?

So expect the updated mini after the Mac pros are shipping, and probably shipping for a solid month or two.

As for the shipping, hell if someone wants a Mac Pro right now, there are many online retailers who will sell you the base Mac Pro now which is the only model that would even remotely be cannibalized by the Mac Mini.

You are approaching it as black and white, while. Am talking about the shades of grey. That is why I said "not one Mac Pro sales lost", not EVERY person who meets those criteria will opt for the mini. You seem to be getting hung up on this notion. When I have time, ill point you to another thread here(probably top 10 at this very second), where a person talks about how they would opt for two minis, instead of a mini and a Mac Pro, if the mini had kind of respectable graphics solution.

Perhaps apple is readying a big announcement/media push for when the big boys start shipping. If they do, then the minis will be updated at that date +30-60 days.

The mini will never have a decent graphics chip. It's already been pointed out that the iris pro based CPUs are way more expensive (2x) than the processors used in the Minis.

Yes, for that individual poster I agree. The mini will not be a viable option. But for CPU bound tasks, a new maxed mini would be an option for someone who was thinking about going for the Mac Pro. And that is why the mini will be delayed as long as possible, in comparison to the Mac Pro. Apple will shake that money tree until they feel every last penny has fallen.

Maybe Tim thought that they were asking what size coffee he wanted when the 'mini' was mentioned in Apple HQ.

Your post is the reason I own a Mac. I almost went with a PC before getting the iMac, and came to the realization I just want something that works every single time. And as a bonus, I can run a couple different operating systems.
