Using excessive amounts of themes with WinterBoard will cause noticeable lag. SSHing a whole theme into the phone without WB would take a while though, so if you don't want a ton of themes on at once, go with WB.

Diskaid is better than ssh. Very easy to use. I prefer to customize that way. You won't be able to put a background on your springboard though if you do not use winterboard. Long story short is: Winterboard will cause lag, customizing via ssh or disk aid will not, but you won't have a springboard background.

Ok thanks. I just installed icomplete theme and I noticed a lot of lag. So that's why I asked.

I was getting peeved at the Ram usage of Winterboard so I removed it and I just do my customization with SSH, DiskAid or AppleTalk. Granted, all I had were a few icon changes, so it's not bad. I even did most of it with MobileTerminal (Taking Youtube icon and applying it to MxTube, etc. I like my iPhone looking spakin' new)

Yes and freaking yes.

Some people either don't understand or have some bias. Winterboard will increase the springboard process usage slowing down you phone, even without anything. Will it make a noticable difference? Depends on the theme and on you. Is SSH better? It's harder, but less lag. Which should you use? Depends on you. But it is false to say "I don't notice it so it ain't there".

it cause lag, i tested it a few times.

anyone that can tell me how to "Theme" my iPhone via SSH or Diskaid!?, cause im able to change the icons and a few things, but most of the things that i tried dont work... :(

Actually KidneyMerchant is (kinda) right. Winterboard does tend to increase SpringBoard's RAM usage, which in turn can lead to performance problems.

Keyword emphasized. ;)

I was actually referring to this:

Winterboard will increase the springboard process usage slowing down you phone

The misapplication of terminology elicited the "kinda" modifier, but he was pretty close; WinterBoard increases SpringBoard's RAM usage. It does consistently (at least in my tests). Whether or not that increased RAM usage introduces a noticeable UI lag is the variable bit.

I agree with you though: some people seem to conflate "WinterBoard causes memory contention, which can cause some lag" with "jailbreak always introduces lag".

Without question using a installed theme with winterboard will noticably slowdown your iphone. Its just a matter of whether you notice it enough to put up with it or remove it.

That it does itsn't really a matter of opinion - its perfectly obvious. A truism.

I've only had my iphone for a couple of weeks. JB it immediately and used it all themed up for a few days until the slowdown and battery life grated on me. I used the 2.2.1 update as a new start point and just JB it so I can use SBSettings and pdanet.

The only thing I miss from winterboard is being able to set a home screen wallpaper and transparent dock.

All slowdown is gone and battery life is immeasurably better - though I'm coming to the conclusion that may have been because SSH was on even when I had it disabled.

For me, winterboard is brilliant but the slowdown is just too annoying.

JMHO.

Come again?

If you disable SSH, you kill the daemon process -- at which point it's no longer running, and thus no longer using CPU/RAM.

Even if you leave it running, OpenSSH is pretty darn light on resources when it's not handling any open connections. I'd be amazed if it cause a noticeable loss of battery life.

Well a number of times I'd kill it from SBSettings and then I could go back in hours later to see that it was still showing as runnning.

Also my battery life was appalling so I'd uninstall apps one by one and go for a bit to see which one made the most difference.

As I said I'm not sure which one it was, but after this JB and now without winterboard has turned my iphone into a 'new' machine. I'm talking battery life of about half a day - 3g on, everything else off - to close to two days with the same setup.

Without question using a installed theme with winterboard will noticably slowdown your iphone. Its just a matter of whether you notice it enough...
What does this statement mean?

Let's see, Winterboard will 'without question using a(n) installed theme' 'notic(e)ably slowdown your iphone' but some people will not notice it? Interesting logic.

My issue with this is we're dealing with a computer. Either Winterboard does increase SB RAM usage or it doesn't, it doesn't 'tend' to. If it does increase RAM usage, then it either does or does not lead to performance problems.

Sounds like you've never debugged software before... Memory leaks can be tricky to reproduce consistently.

Still, I used the word "tend" casually. From all the tests I've conducted, WinterBoard always increases the amount of RAM used by the SB process. The size of the increase is variable, but it *tends to* increase it enough to cause performance problems.

I don't use SBSettings (IMHO it's buggy, plus it requires MobileSubstrate), but I know that if I disable OpenSSH via BossPrefs it definitely stops running.

Still, as I said, I'd be amazed if that were the cause of your performance issues -- OpenSSH tends to be on the lightweight side, at least when it comes to resource usage when idle.

It means that some poeple will not notice it, just as some people will notice a scratch on a window whilst for others not a beep on the observation radar.

But just because someone hasn't noticed it doesn't mean it isn't there.

Oh and FYI people will tend to think you're a prick if you pick others up on spelling/grammatical errors on an internet forum.

Just a heads up for the future.

Yes, after installing winterboard and installing a theme I noticed more lag.

In more general terms, I experienced much more crashing/freezes/lag after jailbreaking.

It was nice to have that kind of control, but eventually the instability was irritating.

Maybe some lucky people have jailbreak configurations that allow their Iphones to run perfectly after a Jailbreak.

Great for them.
I just wasnt lucky enough to be one of them.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

When I first installed winterboard the phone was slow. I SSH'ed and removed what ever I did not use with winterboard and now my phone is running significantly faster, just like it did when it was not jailbroken

May I also add that all I'm using winterboard for is a new dock and background images for lock screen and springboard.

It's really just a question of whether or not you use WinterBoard or any MobileSubstrate-based apps. If you don't, then your phone will likely be lag-free.

My phone is jailbroken, but since I got rid of all MobileSubstrate apps it runs every bit as fast as a stock install.

I really liked Snapture, Mxtube, Intelliscreen and Cycorder.
Awesome apps.

Don't know if they qualify as "mobile substrate based."
Can you give me a definition of what that means?

It just got really frustrating when I wanted to grab a pic of my son or something and having the phone lock up. It happened one too many times, so I dropped the jailbreak and went back to stock.

I love those apps I mentioned and would pay to have them on a stock phone. (Actually did pay for licenses for Intelliscreen and Snapture)

Maybe I'll try a JB again sometime and see if I get any better stability.

Same here. I customize via SSH now, and really enjoy having a responsive UI again.

It took a little longer (and I miss my wallpaper!) but it was WELL worth it, IMO. :)

Anyone link me to a good guide for this?

I want to replace the following: Dock Background, Status Bar background, and all the Application icons for every app I have.

If I could do all this without Winterboard, that would be fantastic. I have noticed major lag lately, and if Winterboard is the culprit, I'd be happy to throw it out.
