Anyone link me to a good guide for this?

I want to replace the following: Dock Background, Status Bar background, and all the Application icons for every app I have.

If I could do all this without Winterboard, that would be fantastic. I have noticed major lag lately, and if Winterboard is the culprit, I'd be happy to throw it out.

You can only change the icons for the stock apps, not App Store stuff. :(

Don't know if they qualify as "mobile substrate based."
Can you give me a definition of what that means?

Pretty simple: I'm referring to any applications based on the MobileSubstrate library. It's a library that is used by a number of applications to "hook in" to the iPhone OS. It's used be a lot of software that performs substantial changes to the way the phone works, looks, or feels. It's easy to find which packages require it; just check the package dependencies and there's your answer...

How do I check the package dependencies?

When I first installed winterboard the phone was slow. I SSH'ed and removed what ever I did not use with winterboard and now my phone is running significantly faster, just like it did when it was not jailbroken

May I also add that all I'm using winterboard for is a new dock and background images for lock screen and springboard.

I am in the same boat as you, only want the dock and custom wallpaper, can you tell me what did you remove? I am using iphonebrowser and diskaid on my winXP machine.
