Apple stores are full of snobs and people who don't get a hoot... I had 5 deal pixels... Mostly red right in the middle of the screen and I had to claw and fight to get them to take it back, 3 trips to the store and phone call to corporate etc... Comp usa will take it back no questions asked for 21 days... Need I say more? Unless you are buying a mac which is customized, not sure why you would, but you can get the same computer at comp usa without any hassle, and still have the regular apple warranty.

Unless the manager is really cool, CompUSA will charge a 15% restocking fee if the computer is opened. And the return period is only 14 days.

Finally I have arrived.....
When I bought 23" ACD from CompUSA, the sales guy said I can take it in if I am not happy with the product for exchange. At that time, there were some issues with "tinting" on 23" ACDs and I wanted to make sure I can get it replaced if mine was one of those defective items. A lot of web posts at that time said Apple stores tend to charge you for a re-stocking fee when you ask for an exchange after it is opened.

Luckily, it did not have any problem. The reason I went with CompUSA for the monitor was because of that and also my purchase was just a monitor.

CompUSA = No EDU discount. Not sure if they sell Apple Care either

Not true. CompUSA will match Apple's EDU discount and they do sell AppleCare.

I suppose dead pixels count as a defect but the return period is only 14 days.

Apple don't actually have to give you an exchange or refund for 5 dead pixels. It was good of them to do so, seeing as legally they could have said that it does not qualify as defective, not until it reaches 6 dead or stuck pixels is the LCD able to be called a defect.

Am I correct in saying this anyone else?

Comp USA for life. I bought my ibook g4 there and when i got home and plugged it on, the charge adapter blew (which i think was my fault, i used the worng outlet). Anyways the next day i brought it back and left the store with as new adapter no questions asked. The people were pretty nice too.

Only thing is they insisted on taking a look at my computer, even when i told them severel times that the problem was with adapter ( then the woman was like, "you know what, our technicians realised the problem was the adapter"), i found that wierd , but procedure i guess.

apple charges 10% as well... maybe not 15% but yeah.... overall i have had good experiences at the apple store, so i'll support their retail stores because i want to see more of them! I like knowing that if i have a problem, i can bring my pb in and they'll look at it. :)

The nice part about CompUSA's policy is that you can *exchange* your notebook within 21 days for *any* reason.

Too hot, too cold, 1 dead pixel, 5 dead pixels, whatever. :)

Having said that, at my local CompUSA, getting any assistance in the Apple area sucks so bad (even if Apple's "specialist" is there -- he's a waste of a polo shirt) that their liberal exchange policy isn't worth it.

If you are the type that needs reassurances and hand-holding, then the Apple store is just fine, but there is a price (at least in the Austin area). I don't know if it is because of stiff competition or what, but every store around here EXCEPT the Apple store offers free exchanges, usually up to 30 days after purchase, and without a restocking charge (even if that is their "official" policy). I personally would never buy anything from the snobs at the Apple store.

I work at CompUSA and can tell you that at least our store will not match the EDU discount. We of course sell Applecare though.

not true. compusa is not a licensed education reseller. they will not give the Edu discount.

if you happen to come across a manager that will knock the price down to match the edu discount then its an anomaly or possibly a manager trying to get you to buy an AppleCare/CompUSA TAP plan by giving you a discount equivalent to the edu discount.

The Orlando area stores take out a big red stamp and stamp the back of the receipt to let you know that there will be a 15 % restocking fee on any hardware. They're also not exactly helpful, if software is defective.

If someone gets a good store, that's great, though. The Apple representatives at CompUSA are great, but they can't determine anything as far as sales go. It's too bad the people at the Apple stores don't seem to care as much but they're usually better than the people at CompUSA.

I bought my Powermac G4 (My first Mac) from CompUSA, and the experience was ok although they *REALLY* tried to push Apple Care on me. The one guy was like "My sister just bought a Powermac, and the power supply blew 1 day after warrenty and they had to replace the whole machine" Im thinking to my-self "Your a moron" :). I also just bought my nee Intel iMac from CompUSA, and it was great, the sales guy was nice, tried to sell me Apple Care of course, and even offered to take $100 off of it when I said no.

In my book one dead pixel is a defect, but maybe I am just picky.

A good return policy is definitely important when shopping. I always make sure to ask 'what if I need to return this' just in case. Most big Box stores are pretty good about returns.

Costco still has the best return policy. They give you SIX MONTHS to return a computer, no restocking fees, and they never ask any questions. Too bad they don't sell Macs.
