Same thing happened to me. I wanted to test out the small ones and it had that little piece of paper on the end. Except I actually stuck a safety needle completely through the screen and you can clearly see a hole. Luckily the small ones are too small and don’t give a good seal so I don’t use them and they’re $4 if I do.

OMG how embarrassing.
This topic (what the OP wrote about) was the cause of
1) My right AirPods Pro "failing"
2) 2 hours deleted from my life as I
a) Called Phone Apple Support. They could not resolve the problem
b) Drove to Apple Store, got in in the repair queue, met with genius.
After 10 minutes, he realize that stupid piece of paper was the problem!
