If they remove the capability to use wired earphones then I think I will just cease using my iPhone for music. I'm not particularly happy with using wireless connected to my head and sound quality of much clearer with a wired option. There is also the fact you haven't got to worry about wired earphones letting you down by running out of charge. If Bluetooth is the only option supported in future, then that's absolutely fine.

I still use the original EarPods non lightning with the Mac and lightning with the iPhone , as was mentioned since we've received a new pair with every iPhone up until now a lot of people have extras.

Now given this day and age of recycling and the amount of waste that is being produced by tech companies I think its a good idea to not include them. Yes some people won't have them and will want them but as someone mentioned maybe you'd have the option of popping in to the Apple store and using a code to redeem for a pair if you needed them.

I think they'd stop producing a lot of waste. Probably the same with the chargers and some cables to be fair!!

if Apple actually listened to people that wanted to keep things like the floppy disk or the headphone jack, then the revolution would never come, although it would make more sense to not include Earpods just on next years' portless iPhone.

It is always the same. People complain for a while, then 10 years later nobody remembers that junk anymore.

I’m more worried about them removing the lighting port entirely. I don’t use EarPods but I do use other wired headphones. I’ve never loved the idea of having wireless tranceivers literally attached to my head. But, it looks like we are probably going to have no choice in the future.

Agree but, as mentioned in the previous post without someone taking that path (I resisted using the word courage ) then things would generally stay the same. As I think I've heard Apple (maybe Steve Jobs) mention before most people don't know they needed (or didn't) something until they see it.

Being a rumours site none of us know what something will actually be like on launch and how it will be used by those when people get it in their hands. This is of course also true for Apple who have seen how users use their products in ways they never imagined

I know I am in the minority-- and it's just a rumor-- but I'd be bummed if Apple stopped including EarPods with new iPhone purchases. I get it, AirPods/AirPods Pro are all the rage right now (and for good reason), but I don't need premium headphones for my usage.

First, I don't listen to my headphones all that often, but when I do, EarPods are sufficient. So spending $200-$250 on wireless headphones doesn't make sense for me.

Second, sure, I have extra EarPods laying around, but that works for me. I can have dedicated EarPods for both my backpacks, one in my car, a set for the gym, one in my nightstand and not have to worry about keeping one pair with me all the time.

Third (and this is the most important point): I don't have to charge EarPods. I don't want another product that I am going to have to concern myself with charging at night or in the morning. It's just so much easier to have wired headphones that I know will work when I need them to.

Still, I understand that a majority don't share my view on headphones. And, even if Apple were to stop including them I still have enough spares laying around for my current needs. But, I always enjoyed getting a new pair with a new iPhone and keeping them as backups or giving them to a friend or family member when they needed one.

Am I the only one that has way too many of these damn things and they just end up being a waste. I really get they are nice to have with a new phone, but I a drawer full of them. I end bringing them to tech dump and it just seems like a waste.

They never fit my ears, so I don't use them. And yes, I have quite a few spares lying around. Neither my wife or son uses them either, just my daughter.

I am one of those who had no 'choice' but to but AirPod Pros as the others never fit my ear properly. Sound qaulity is nowhere near wired, but such is life....sadly....

We have a bunch with the 3.5mm connectors. The ones with Lightning, nope. This is our first upgrade since iPhone SE and 7 so never had a chance to accumulate extras.

I agree with you, that I really hope Apple doesn't take them out. It's bad enough that many many non flagship Android phones already exclude earbuds from their boxes. And whatever the reason, there will be just too many bad press for Apple.

It’s not just about complaining though is it? Wired headphones are still widely used across many technologies and at this point are still a superior technology to Bluetooth earbuds in terms of quality. The example you mentioned like the floppy disk had a much superior solution at the time of being phased out. I don’t mind so much removing the headphone jack as there are workarounds using the other port but removing it completely means the user has no option but to use Bluetooth or nothing at all. I’m all for choice when technology’s still very relevant.

If a future iPhone model no longer comes with the lightning port, then it makes no sense to bundle a set of headphones that don’t work with it.

On the topic of no port, unless Apple invents a way to deliver zero latency, then certainly they’d be further alienating a portion of the user base who does more with their apple devices than send memoji’s to classmates or share instagrams of their duck faces. AirPods or anything wireless are useless when using an i-device or MacBook for multi-track recording, for example. In fact, using AirPods with my MBA and Logic software when testing audio mixes across different headphones/speakers doesn’t work: all I hear is digital noise/crackling. I can give in to having to tote a lightning/headphone jack dongle to use my iPhone 8 with my myriad of audio equipment that’s not going into a dumpster anytime soon, but any elimination of an actual hardware port would cut off at the knees most any professional or amateur hobbyist musician who records.

I just got rid of like 5 or 6 pairs that I had from previous phones that I just never got rid of over the years. They were unused and just collecting dust in a drawer.

I have never liked them. They are low quality and sound like garbage.

I was speaking of buying second hand.

I grt the op’s point. I don’t use them. And even if I did, it wouldn’t bothrer me if Apple didn’t include them. If I want them bad enough, I will buy them. Apple doesn’t owe them to me.

If the rumor is true, it may end up being a prudent move for Apple in many ways.
You didn't mention the second-hand part in your original post...kind of a vital bit of information to your point! Also...second-hand earbuds is absolutely disgusting.

I have AirPods and still used the wired ones sometimes. At some point they’ll break or go missing like all the others.

Now, my wife and I need to spend $50 ($70 CAD) next time we get phones? I don’t mind if the savings are passed down. If not, that’s a meaningful amount of extra money to some people.

Buy these. Same price as EarPods, sound way better, just use the lightning adapter with them-

Except Apple stopped including the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter on new iPhones as well.

I'm totally with the treadstarter. i use my earpods once a month on the phone while driving and 5 times a year when taking a longer phonecall.. cables always work (trust me, i'm a sound tec. i usually rely on wired connections..)
even if it might be convenient to use wireless buds its not worth to money when you hardly use them at all.
but one other question off topic: if apple goes portless, whats the default way to charge? will all phones come with a Qi charger then?

i miss the mini jack.. really useful as a sound-guy...

cheers

Apple is on a mission to eradicate fiddly cables and ports from the world, and will do everything they can to further this mission. It’s embedded in their design ethic.

You’d have to spend the money when you need new earphones in that potential scenario. You wouldn’t buy new earphones just because you just bought a new phone. At least I wouldn’t.

I’m using a 6s, so I’d need to buy some new earphones or adapters. I will still need to deal with that transition.

Well when the need arises then. For the start you can use the AirPods you wrote were in your possession.

I would be disappointed. I use EarPods everyday. My wife bought me AirPods and I had them returned.

I enjoy lying in bed on my side with my EarPods on. With AirPods, when they fall out, I would be searching for them all over the place rather than just tugging on the cable.

My EarPods don’t run out of battery, sound is uninterrupted and with the 3.5mm adapter, I can use them with other devices.

I have PowerBeats for running and Beats Solo3, which are a torture to wear and switch between iPad, Phone and other devices. The EarPods just WORK.
