I hope people don't say this is too skinny and then we get some thick ugly font like what happened with iOS 7...beta 1's font was my favorite.

Roboto is not a great font, I find SF to be much, much better. But Roboto is still a country mile better than Helvetica Neue.
how exactly would one know whether a font is great or not? I hardly notice fonts unless its not readable. would be interested in a serious answer. the subtle differences seem hardly recognizable to me.

To be honest, people aren't really meant to notice. If you do notice, that would be bad. Unless it's a headline that's meant to stylized, a good font should be invisible.

SF is a good font because it was made to perform. People that refer to how it looks are missing the point.

I don't have a problem with the font, but I hate how the lowercase letters are aligned on the keyboard. They are all aligned on the same baseline, which makes letters with an ascender look like they are to high on the key and letters with a descender look to low. I think it would look better if they just centered each of the letters vertically so they have equal empty space above and below.

This allows the letters to look less awful when the keyboard is toggling case. Still pretty bad, but at least the letters stay in alignment when they do it.

If nothing else, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple added a setting in a later beta to keep the keyboard all uppercase, and you could use that. Seeing the case of the letter you're about to type is nice for some, but it can open up another can of worms for usability.

Doesn't that setting already exist in beta 1?

As far as I know, no. The only new setting I see is to bring back the "character preview" popup when you tap a key. Unless it's tucked in Accessibility settings, which I haven't checked in 9.0 yet.

To be honest, whatever font they will use in the next generation of mac OS X or iOS, if I can read anything with little or no difficulties, I will accept it over time. Otherwise, I may blame that font into ashes.

That is how I think about it too. If the typeface is legible and doesn't look shabby, I will adjust to it easily. The fact that Apple designs a set of fonts specifically for computer and phone interfaces, with body text and headline distinctions, is a good thing. It was not a good thing to apply a set of fonts that were not meant for UI and body text, like Helvetica Neue.
