Don't you wish you weren't so involved?

This is mainly pointed to the regulars here...

Don't you wish that you were just a regular ole consumer every now and again?

Think about this, between app updates, lack of specific features, App Store rejections... All of this really starts to drive some of us crazy.

For instance, since reading that Facebook 3.0 was submitted to the App Store I check for updates of my apps at LEAST 3 times a day. If I wasn't so involved in reading these posts I wouldn't be doing that and would be thrilled to see an update, when I saw it.

Google Voice rejection stories that I have read have made me REALLY start looking into the WHY and who is really to blame and for what? To make speculations and drive myself nuts?

MMS/Tethering... you ALL should know what I am getting at with this one.

If I wasn't so involved with being a geek and reading all this stuff all the time I have a feeling I would be more happy than I am with this phone. Does anyone agree? I'm not complaining but more of wishful thinking... If anyone has anything CONSTRUCTIVE to add... please feel free.

Actually, I'm quite happy with my phone. I'm very involved, as you say, but it's in a good way. I like knowing as much as possible about something and these forums are a wealth of info. Do I wish the facebook thread was actually a thread that stated the update was out? Yeah. Much like I wish the mms threads were meaningful. However, for the most part I learn something new every day. I'm looking forward to getting next year's model, so I can finally JB my 3G.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I like being involved but sometimes I wish I wasn't because let's face it... there are times when you get so frustrated with what is/isn't happening and those are the times when being a regular consumer would be great simply because they DON'T read stuff like these forums.
 
You know, it's weird - I've been on the internet since like 1996 or so, but I can't, for the life of me, remember what I used to do online before gadget blogs and forums and such.

I think I used to look up Nine Inch Nail stuff, or something ... ? Some UseNet? Cruising web sites for single mp3 and midi files to download? Man, I'll be damned if I can remember.

And the funny thing is, blogs and what-not have only been around since like the mid-2000's. :eek:

Ha ha! I hear ya! I know I used to look up single MP3's all the time I can't remember most of the sites though... most are probably gone, I remember going into AOL Chat Rooms a lot with friends trying to ask girls for pics and "A/S/L" LOL
 
I agree with aggie; I might be a little more involved than the average consumer but I enjoy it :) it doesnt run my life or anything. And lol@ cello- I can't either! I think I belonged to some bulletin boards and chatted through ICQ :D

I feel this way sometimes. It's easy to nit pick through all of the things that are problems and forget how much I really like it. Also, I remember constantly checking for the 3.0 update and downloaded it about half an hour after it was released. My phone ended up freezing up because so many other people were downloading/installing it at the time. Had I been a less involved follower I probably would have installed it the next day or so and not had a frozen phone (even thought it was only for an hour or so).

Spend less time in the iPhone forums and more time in the Mac forums ... People are more constructive in their conversations about their products, the people in the iPhone forums seem to just wanna complain all the time, and when they complain it gets you wondering if you have that same complaint. For me the iPhone forums are basically for entertainment only.

I will once I get my mac mini. My son has the mac. Until then, I'm not worthy to talk in those forums (some can be kind of snobby), even though I was using a Mac in the 80's.
 
Apple made their play very well. They got us and we are stuck. I am on my 3rd iPhone and need to bring this one in. The last time they said the warranty would not cover the repairs. So I had to get a new iPhone, not because I could not live without the iPhone, not because AT&T has locked me to an iPhone, but because I have invested in the apps. Just not being able to use the apps on any other phone means, that until I just totally throw in the towel I will have an iPhone.

I always liked that scene for some reason. So much so that I made it a point to eat at that restaurant when my wife and I visited Sydney a few years ago (well that, and the reviews were good). One of the most expensive meals I ever ate, but it was very tasty. And no they don't have steak there... or harp players.

But maybe the bottom line is that I'm a "Blue pill" kinda guy. Except when it comes to the iPhone, hence all my visits to Macrumors, especially when something cool is about to come out.

It's important to stay up to date on the newest OS..eg; 3.0.1 was important because of a sms hack as we all know, but what about the guy who checks itunes once or twice a week? Is he/she more vulnerable for the attack?

I tend to think so. Keeping up with the forums lends great information on not only new releases, but new apps, tricks, hacks, and general information that can make the phone more useful. :)
 
I'm actually slowly becoming uninvolved. My iPhone is on poor old 2.2.1 where it is fast and stable. There's nothing to complain about... there's nothing new and exciting about 2.2.1. So I just use my iPhone as a phone now-a-days and I do mostly texting and twittering.

I too sometimes wish I wasn't so obsessed with checking for new iPhone news, waiting for updates, checking for app updates, looking for new and exciting apps. It feels to me as if I'm always trying to feed some sort of hunger... I'm eager to see what's next, but now that I've seen the piece of crap 3.0, I'm perfectly happy to use 2.2.1 for now.

Tell you what... the features I gain in 3.0 aren't worth the performance hit. I only used Copy/Paste in 3.0 and push a few times.

So yeah, I've been out of the loop... especially since most new apps are requiring 3.0 or later. It also sucks because some apps are getting updated with some cool features, but they're only for 3.0 so I have to stick with the old version. The app I miss the most in 2.2.1 is BeeJive IM (with push). I love the updated interface that 3.0 brought. Oh well... Nimbuz is still working on 2.2.1.

I'm sure some of you may have noticed that I've been less vocal lately... I'm taking somewhat of a break from my iPhone obsession and focusing it toward Snow Leopard.

I noticed that too. The folks in the Mac Forum are very nice and have well thought out discussions (most of the time) but it seems like the iPhone forum makes all the ignorance come out of people. I've been loving the Mac OS X forum lately. Lots of good info in there.

I'm still on 3.0. The risk seemed negligible and I couldn't be bothered with the kind of crap my iTunes has been pulling recently (it seems to fail at least the first time when restoring or upgrading the OS, works perfectly on everyone else's iTunes though)

I check for Facebook updates 3 times a day too, and I don't even use Facebook all that much. But my wife loves it, so that's why I check.

But nothing will exceed how frequently I checked the UPS tracking system back when I preordered my 3GS in June. That was insane. The head of UPS's IT department actually phoned me to beg that I stop hammering their servers so hard. ;)
