If you have to get one, get Quake IV. I torren... uh bought it and it was a great game, with good level variety and a decent story. But everyone knows that the gameplay is where it's at, and this game is very fun indeed. I wish my iMac had a better GPU though, this game can be pretty demanding at times. I had to run it lower than native res and with AA off and most of the other stuff off

I played both. They both have similar stories (kill aliens) but quake IV definitely has more of a twist and more interaction with the environment, like driving vehicles and such. For me, the story line got really repetitive and boring, but overall it's a better game than Doom 3.

I didn't like Quake 4 at all. It was average until the ending (that final boss is WEAK. It's like they tried to recreate the genius of the Quake 1 final boss but failed, oh and the speech at the end? Too cliched for my liking).

But Doom 3 was a much more atmospheric, more horrifying experience. It made me jump on many occasions, made me quick save often. And it gets better as it goes along.

I haven't played multiplayer on either so this is just my single player evaluation.

I have heard several things about both games, good and bad. I promised myself i am going to only get one. But which one?

Opinions Wanted!

download the quake 4 demo...

If Aspyr's website wasn't such a pain in the ass to go through then you'd probably have already done so... but unless you really look for it you're not gonna see the demo.

Get it here: http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=19241

I'd also recommend going to a site like ign.com and checking their reviews for the games.

I'd recommend you get Quake IV.

Doom 3 has more horror & moments to make you jump at first. But I found the variety and squad interaction in Q4 to be more entertaining.

I'd still say both are worth giving a go but if you're working with a gaming budget make it Q4 :)

If you have Boot Camp, go with the PC versions of each.

You'll have better performance that way.

Yes. They're very cheap for the PC too. Doom 3 is a few quid on Steam (or better still for £30 you get Doom 3 and every id game and expansion ever) and Quake 4 is about £25 or something.

No Prey? It uses the same engine and has a very similar feel to both Quake 4 and Doom 3. It's like a mix of the 2 but with portals and very fun gravity moments.

Overall, would you say, is more graphic intensive? And, do these games need a good amount of random access to run glitch free? I recently bought my Mac Pro and i haven't yet ordered my ram, and don't know if i will for a while, do i need to? (just an F.Y.I, i have 8 cores and 2 gB of ram)

Thanks~

2 gigs is probably sufficient, though u might see a small performance increase if you get more... assuming your bottleneck isn't the GPU.

what graphics card did you get?

and to reiterate, i highly recommend reading reviews for the games.

Also, quake 4 ran great on my iMac so i don't think you need to get the PC version because of performance. That and you have a mac pro.

Though if you can get them significantly cheaper for PC then you MIGHT want to take that into consideration
(i bought Prey, but only because the PC version was offered on Steam for just $5 one weekend).

Ya, I have been reading reviews, and it seems that everyone is saying somewhat of the same thing- Doom 3 is more scary and has this that and the other, but Quake 4 is more strategic and more fun. I have the standard ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, it seems it will work just fine? I didn't even consider my GPU, because of all the advertising I saw on the apple site how the MP is the best gaming computer they have and that the 26000 XT......" Although, i had Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 for some reason, my brothers i think? And the gameplay is terrible!! It glitches every where. Forget "riding the rides" because the screen refreshes about twice every second, i thought this was supposed to be the great MAC PRO?? Am i doing something wrong??

Thanks~

-Ben

Prey is awesome-it is just really messed up-dont play it at night, in a dark room, alone and at 2 AM-you will freak out

note:I am not speaking from playing in such a circumstance I can just see how creepy it would be.

However, on Friday at my local Frys(Palo Alto, CA) I saw a copy of Prey for pc for 10 bucks-so if you got boot camp and are near a frys i say get prey

I would check out bearfeats

they compare all the graphics options and run benchmarks on different games

I second Prey as well. Pretty cool game and definitely trippy at times with the anti gravity and all. I didn't think it was very scary, Doom 3 definitely is scarier.

Ya i had seen Prey in stores, Is the story-line pretty much the same as the others? kill aliens?? I also noticed that it was listed on BareFeats [Thanks cuestakid!] thinking that it must be relatively "up-to-snuff" graphics wise. I just wonder that because of the lack of popularity it has. (Compared to lets say, Doom)

Thanks~

Ironically, all three games we're discussing here are based on the same engine - the Doom 3 engine.

If cost isn't an issue, i'd say you should go for mac versions based on how awesome the mac version of quake 4 runs.

I never played Doom 3, but I've beat Quake 4 twice and I'm currently in the middle of Prey.

Based on what I've seen so far of Prey, it's not a bad game, but I'd definitely take Quake 4 over it.

By the way, I give Raven Software and id Software MAJOR credit and respect for how immersive they made the spaceship thingy in Quake 4. I think it's a little before the halfway point in the game, you go aboard a human ship so you can get briefed for your next mission, and it's just totally awesome. The announcements you hear over the PA system, all the different guys around the ship who say unique things, the fact that you get to go visit the medical ward, the cafeteria, the repair bay, and tons of other places rocks.
I especially love watching and listening to the doctors in the medical ward.

I loved that part. Buy it for that reason alone :)

EDIT: OH YEAH, one more thing. Quake 4 gives you a reason to keep your NPC allies alive. The technicians can repair your armor and the medics can heal you, as opposed to NPC allies in most games that are pretty much expendable.

Not really, I brought up Prey just because it's a similar game with the same engine :D

Prey is definitely the most graphic intensive, then Quake 4 then Doom 3. But that's in a reversed order of release - the engine must have been tweaked and optimised on each release. It has a more detailed story, more elaborate bosses, original weapons, very creative level design.

Quake 4 is more like an action thriller kinda game. Story is so-so, weapons are just what Quake has always had. Really it's like Quake 2 but with new graphics. There are a couple of spectacular fights though but overall it's quite bland inbetween the big events.

Doom 3 is just a horror game. More or less the same weapons from previous games. Story is good and there's a great moment just over half way into the game that made me drop everything and keep playing.

In terms of weapon selection, is Doom 3 more fantasy? And Quake more fictional? At least this is what i gather from watching videos on different sites, my real question is, in your opinion, where does Prey fall into this. And, should i wait for Prey's sequel?

EDIT, that is if it is having one, if that makes sense... Isn't it expected if the first was just so great?

From what I've heard yes, they're making a sequel. Might as well play the first one then :)

Anyway, have you downloaded the quake 4 demo yet?

Until I tried the demo I had actually never played quake before, nor was I familiar with the story line or anything at all. But I thought the demo (the first couple of levels) was awesome, and bought the game after that.

Prey was $5 on Steam a few weeks ago

Both Doom and Quake are primarily high tech "futuristic" weapons, but Doom has some Hell weapon too.

Prey has alien weapons and most of them are pretty original and quite fun to use.
