Get Quake. More variety, better gameplay, better graphics, and better performance!

Ok, ok, ok. I think i have been inspired to purchase Quake 4 (at least first) it seems its the favorite and nothing tells how "good" a game is than several actual people, not salesmen or descriptions on the backs of the boxes. Thats what i was looking for. Well I think ill download the demo just to make sure, but if doom doesn't have one i think my curiosity will torture me, because I'm that type of person, and i will be afraid I might of liked doom 3 more. Oh well I'm drawing this out and wasting your 'alls time. I do appreciate it tho, OH and I just got bootcamp running Windows XP so I will definitely look into some gamestops or something (desperate attempt to find that $5 deal)... I think i can afford that, Haha...

Thanks,
~Ben

I just finished Prey tonight, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I didn't think the storyline was gonna be great but I actually really liked it.

It was also really long - in a good way though, not a bad way.

Unfortunately every single multiplayer server was empty. The single player was definitely fun though.

But if it's one or the other, I'd choose Quake 4 over Prey.

O.k, so i went and bought Quake 4. Now i must say i am a little disappointed with the graphics. i currently have a an 8 core 2.8 MP and still 2 gB of ram (soon 4) and the stock 2600 XT, now I have ran Heros 5 on max-ed out graphics and it looks EXCEPTIONAL! crystal clear!! but this game, quake 4, is jumping, and just looks "fuzzy" plus, the game doesn't have the resolution my screen is! my screen is 1920x1200 and it is set for the largest 1600X1200, i think? all i know is that it wasn't exact. i have it on "ultra-detail" as well, which the computer popped up and "advised" me to not do that, but its the flippin' Mac Pro! am i wrong on these high, high standards? or am i doing something wrong??

any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
-Ben

my best guess is simply that the stock radeon card is just not up to snuff graphic wise
as you can see from these scores, the new stock radeon while an improvement over the previous stock is still not quite a quality gaming card for mac-the 8800GT is the only one that will get you the performance that you wish to have.

For the record, I played quake 4 on my 2006 mac pro with the stock graphics card an it played fine-though i do not recall what my settings were

I enjoyed both Doom 3 & Quake 4, can't go wrong either way. :)

But Doom 3 was a much more atmospheric, more horrifying experience. It made me jump on many occasions, made me quick save often. And it gets better as it goes along.

You are bringing back memories... I remeber playing Doom 3 right after it was released on my 2.3GHz Power Mac G5 and being scared/rather anxious throughout much of the game! :D :)

I didn't like Quake 4 at all. It was average until the ending (that final boss is WEAK. It's like they tried to recreate the genius of the Quake 1 final boss but failed, oh and the speech at the end? Too cliched for my liking).

I haven't played multiplayer on either so this is just my single player evaluation.
i totally agree man quake 4 was too over done where as doom 3 was more orginal and u had u do stuff harder ways and lots of fun

My recommendations, having played all four:

For single-player linear "quest":

Prey = best overall. Amazing graphical effects, nice variety of locations, and the wallwalking/spiritwalking/etc. are really neat. Better puzzles than any of the others. Combat is a little bit on the easy side--but a tougher mode is unlocked when you win. Story is a little on the short side and a little goofy, but still more of a story then I see in Doom 3 or Quake 4. Multiplayer is really fun, if you can round up people to play.

Quake 4 = a close second. Combat is more varied than Prey or Doom 3, and the story at least has one twist (but totally spoiled by now). Longer than Prey (I haven't actually finished Q4 yet). Multiplayer is just like Q3 Arena, and has active servers online. VERY fast-paced multiplayer, even compared to UT2004.

Doom 3 = best ONLY for atmosphere and scary creatures. Length seems to be in between Prey and Quake 4. But for the most part it's repetitive, and relies too much on the same few monsters popping out right in front of you so you can't possible react--until the second time you play the level (which will have the exact same monsters doing the same things). It also gets off to a slow start before you get to fighting. I still enjoyed it--but if I could only have ONE of these 3 games, it wouldn't be Doom. Unless, that is, the scare-factor is most important! Multiplayer isn't much to write home about, fewer included maps and modes than Q4 but still looks nice and has a few active players last I checked. Best thing: there are some neat mods (like Last Man Standing and eventually Intro Cerberon) for Doom 3, and user-made maps too.

However, a linear "quest" isn't the only kind of game. I HIGHLY recommend Quake Wars if class-based team combat interests you. It's very little relation to the other 3 games, other than the basic engine. But it's a LOT of fun and highly addictive (and highly complex--so learn one thing at a time, ignore the rest until you're ready, and have fun). I'll be playing it for a long time to come I'm sure. QW can be played offline with bots, but it's multiplayer-focused, so expect lots of online players and servers. The community is very active.

If I could only have one of these 4 games, it would have to be Quake Wars. Prey would be a close second.

Lol, I think the twist is like... supposed to be spoiled.

They advertised the game by talking about the "twist." It says it on all the review, previews... hell, it even says it on the back of the game box :)

But yeah, go with Quake Wars if you're only getting one. Multiplayer = super awesome replay value

And btw, Prey was fun but when I checked online I didn't see a single person playing.

Yep, I think Id took a lot of the fun away in the name of marketing. Bungie did it right: the surprise in the middle of Halo was not hinted at in any marketing, and was all the more fun as a result. (And frankly was one of the scariest moments in any game I've played--because I wasn't expecting to be scared. And I accidentally skipped the cutscene/helmet-video that intoduced Halo's twist before the player came to it--so I had no warning until I heard the sounds a few seconds before scariness ensued.) I think people would have liked Quake a lot better and given it better reviews and word of mouth if the only significant plot point was allowed to develop unspoiled.

Prey multiplayer was VERY fun. I did find people playing online when the Mac version was new--and I even found a few playing the Mac demo. Even after that, if I entered an empty server (or started one) and waited a while, eventually people would start to join. It has really died down, but that's still worth a try: Mac and PC do play together, and you never know how many people just like you are looking at the list and seeing zero players. Someone has to join first! Failing that, gather some friends or online buddied and set a time. It may be just Deathmatch, but the wallwalking etc. adds a lot

Doom 3 or Quake 4?
How about Doom 4? :D

But, seriously.
When Doom 3 came out for Windows, I just had to get it. I bought it and could play all settings max with Dolby 5.1 sound... one word: WOW!! So scary!
Must admit that after a couple of hours it did become a bit predictable... i.e. enter room, admire the grfx, room becomes dark, <Quick Save>, be shocked by awesome monster, kill monster, next room... is dark... sound of falling bolts behind you... get startled by next awesome monster.. forget Quick Save, and reload from last Quick Save.. etc. :D
And because it was so gr8, when it came out for the Mac, I immediately bought a copy Doom 3 for Mac too! I got the GeForce 6800 Ultra in my then Dual 1.8 GHz G5, and wanted to find out how gr8 that card was...!
I have saved all of my save game files, and now and then I fire up Doom 3 and reload one of my final saved games, just to look at it!

I also got Quake 4 for the PC, and now I have a Mac Pro, I can also install it under Mac OS X, as the serial for Mac and PC both work
But, in fairness....I hardly ever played it. Yeah it looks cool but because I have played Doom 3, Quake 4 doesn't seem to cut it.
I am sure if I had never seen Doom 3, I would probably thought Quake 4 was awesome... but not now.

Can't wait for Doom 4.

I have played both games and find that the doom story is getting old and doom 3 is just a reiteration of the old "good" games. Quake 4 on the other hand has great game play a story line that is easy to follow. I played just so I could get more of the story. Plus toward the end is awesome! I feel that Doom 3 relies mostly on thrilling and jumping out at you from dark corners than making actual innovative game design. Quake 4 is on par with Doom 3 in model quality and all but is based more on learning the story and actually playing the game, not creeping around worrying about what is going to jump at you next. Is it going to be a fat zombie guy with a gun or a fat zombie guy with a pipe this time?

Then again to each there own. Some people like the thrill ride. If you do go with Doom 3 get surround sound and play alone with the volume up and the lights off.

And that's the way I played it.... from the first level... (still counting my grey hairs.. :( )
You are so right about 5.1 sound. It just cannot be underestimated.

well i think it might be getting me too, but I have only just started out. My friend brought the actual game, not the tiny trial version, but because he used the serial key already, i am playing on the 14 day trial, but installed full game?? So can i do the online thing or just buy the game and punch in the serial number of the new one or do i have to re-install? Cuz it was a pain in the ass and I "have the game" just not the account. I think??
