Yeah, I can second that, it worked like this a year ago. I thought the update to the final bits would come as a delta update for testers, but that didn't happen and I did have to manually "buy" and download the full installer from the App Store, but that's all there was to it.

When you say "buy", you mean free?

Just pulled out of the beta. Don't want to go any further because I'd rather be running the release version when that comes out. Just opted out and the available update disappeared straightaway.

I plan on getting out of betas by opting out of pre-release in system preferences. However, I noticed I mistakenly had , "Download newly available updates in the background" checked in system preferences. I did not have "Install OS X updates" checked. So, OS 10.11.1 "packages" did download, but, did not install. I found the following packages in Macintosh HD>Library>Updates>031-35003:
  1. OSXUpd10.11.1PublicBeta.pkg
  2. FirmwareUpdate.pkg (Downloaded 1 minute prior. Not sure if related to 10.11.1).
Are these safe to delete since I don't plan on installing OS 10.11.1 public beta? -or- Will the packages get removed when I opt out?

You should just be able to download the file from the App Store when it gets released and install it. I can't remember if the final release appears as an update, I think you have to use the installer.

If going from GM to Public Release will not be an "Update", will the process be the same as when we installed the GM? Meaning, we will be directed to use the installer and the installer will be provided?

Yes, you should be able to delete those files as you don't intend to install them. They likely won't be removed when you opt-out. Also, I don't think the App Store will urge you to do anything when the release drops. It'll just become available on the App Store and you'll just download it and install it. I'll personally be creating a bootable thumb drive and performing a fresh install. I like to do this whenever a new version of OS X comes out, just a spring clean. Keeps things smooth and fast.

10.11.1 is working so well for me, I plan to leave it alone when the Official Release of 10.11 comes out. I see no reason not to:p Except, I'd like a new Nvidia Driver:oops:

I found that gem buried deep in a reddit thread - I was curious so I tried it myself, and it worked, all my apps / settings stayed the same.

Yes, it did work as explained in this thread.
  1. I mistakenly had , "Download newly available updates in the background" checked in system preferences. I did not have "Install OS X updates" checked. So, OS 10.11.1 "packages" did download, but, did not install. So, I had to delete the following packages in Macintosh HD>Library>Updates>031-35003:
    • OSXUpd10.11.1PublicBeta.pkg
    • FirmwareUpdate.pkg
  2. Unenrolled from beta testing on my mac
  3. Went to the Mac App Store, downloaded and installed OS X El Capitan

While troubleshooting another unrelated issue with iPhotos, I noticed that I had the following in my "Purchased" section of the Mac App Store:
  1. OS X El Capitan
  2. OS X El Capitan GM Candidate
I thought that was interesting, and, most likely normal. However, I decided to check the build numbers and noticed:
  1. OS X El Capitan is listed on my computer as 10.11 (15A284)
  2. OS X El Capitan GM Candidate is listed on macrumors as build number 15A282b
I am sure this is not earth shattering, but, I thought I'd at least confirm, that the GM and Public Release of an OS are not always the same and that the process (to get out of betas) many asked about is relatively painless.
