Downgraded from Catalina to Mojave...what is this?

I downloaded Catalina...and it caused issues with my iTunes library, so I downgraded to Mojave from a Time Machine Backup.

Now, I see this weird "Macintosh HD - Data" information when looking at my HD. It appears it was created during my Catalina upgrade?

Is there any way to remove it?

It's how Apple now lists the drives. System Folders are now secured, preventing any changes in there. Whereas your Data Partition is writable. It's all a little convoluted but it is normal. I'm sure someone on here will be able to explain it better than I have. What I can tell you is... "Do not remove it!".

Catalina splits of the drive like that. Option key boot to your TM backup then launch Disk Utility. The set it to Show all devices. Then select the drive itself at the very top like in my screenshot and erase the drive back to one volume. Then restore your TM backup of Mojave and you should be all set back to one volume.

Thanks! That's working...but now to my new issue.

I have a "Security Update" that it wants me to do. After I click on it and restart my computer...I see this error. Which then makes me start up using Macintosh HD.

How do I install the update properly? I feel like my computer is being funky since I downgraded from Catalina.

Try a command-option-r boot to Internet recovery, the use Disk Utility to run First Aid in the drive. See if that helps.

Did that...it ran successfully. It still doesn't work.

Very frustrating that I have this security update and can't apply it.

however I did the downgrade not by usingTM but by a bootable disk and now I get the same image (see below) can anyone please advice what is this and what should I do? Is it the same process as withTM? Thank you!

Ok thanks a lot! however I felt that is taking more space than it did before. It says all the time your disk is almost full and I am using much less data than before -as I have lost photoshop CS6 and others..

Also it doesn't boot properly, it is stuck and I have to turn it off and reboot holding alt down and choose the -data hard drive etc. There is obviously sth wrong.. Should I just upgrade back to Catalina? Thanks so much again!

To avoid the alt boot, it sounds like you need to select the startup disk in System Preferences. With regards to the space, not knowing what is installed I can't comment. But the sreengrab does show that you are running short of space.

Thank you! I did select the other disk and it worked. So just to be clear (sorry for asking again) it is totally normal that I am with two hard drives now, even though I downgraded to Mojave? and there is no way that I can get Photoshop CS6 back? Many thanks again.

If you are back on Mojave then no, you should not have the two drives listed. That is a Catalina setup. Sorry for miss understanding. My best advise would be to back up your data. And clean install Mojave, if that is your preferred OS. I'm not sure what method you used to downgrade and if it wasn't a clean install then that would explain your OS issues and missing space...

Yes I have done a downgrade with a bootable disk.. not using time machine, not a clean install. I have lost all data including all Adobe applications but from what I am told that would be lost anyway since I did the upgrade to Catalina. So ok I will do a clean install. Thank you.

First of macOS isn't meant to be downgraded within the same APFS Container, you probably should have erased your APFS Container before kicking off the downgrade.

Okay, here is what happened and what you need to do.
You deleted your system volume of Catalina, left your data volume in place; then recreated a system volume and installed Mojave to that. The problem is that your Recovery/Preboot volumes still have Catalina content in them. Notice that you are seeing the Catalina icon when trying to do a Mojave software update! Yikes.

Here's what you need to do...
1) Delete the volume ending in "- Data"; it's no longer necessary. I promise that it's safe to delete, your already restored Mojave to the new volume and all your data is there.
2) Download the Mojave Full Installer from the App Store if you don't already have the installer.
2a) The next steps need to be completed in-order, do NOT reboot your Mac after deleting the Recovery volume until you've kicked off the full installer.
3) Delete your Recovery Volume.
3a) Open Terminal, and type: diskutil list
3b) Look for the volume named "Recovery"
3c) diskutil apfs deleteVolume disk0X0
(Replacing the 0's with what you see in terminal for that disk representing Recovery)
4) Open the Install macOS Mojave.app application
5) Target your system and tell it to install. (Yes, I know it's already installed, but the act of it installing over itself will fix you)
6) Now that your system is installed properly you can proceed with installing that security update.

(OR)
Save yourself the pain and just reinstall Catalina... Either way, you should delete that "Data" volume though before kicking off an install.

Thank you for all this info, it actually makes sense but I have some questions:
My Macintosh HD- Data disk seems to have all the info whereas my Macintosh HD has this weird files (see screenshots attached). Should I probably delete this one instead?
Sorry for this it seems I have confused everything, what a nightmare this Catalina thing, should I perhaps go and reinstall it as you suggest? I don't think I am getting back any Adobe program anyway -any suggestions about that?

- Open disk utility and choose "show ALL devices" from the view menu
- Select the ENTIRE internal drive (top line) and ERASE it to APFS with GUID partition format
- Close disk utility, open the installer, install Mojave, then...
- Restore data from backup during setup procedure.

If the reason you, like the OP, downgraded to Mojave is iTunes, then you can reinstall iTunes on Catalina. It's probably easier than downgrading the entire OS.

Did that and worked fine, thank you, I (re) installed Catalina. However the problem of not having any Adobe program remains. They want even to pay for Acrobat. Mac should have had a warning about this, it's so unfair.

Not that I know of. I don't know your specific PDF needs, but the built-in Preview is a decent alternative.

If you are insistent on staying with Mojave, follow the steps I already sent you.
Looks like you deleted your Data volume, which is good.
You now need to proceed with deleting the Recovery volume and do an upgrade install of Mojave over itself.
