DP4 is stable enough to use on my production system. Yes, I know never to put a beta on a production system but anyway, it's working now. I'm glad the DPs are going to be updated more frequently (or so I read).

Really don't know whether to install it or not! Only have a MBA, can always go use my parents iMac if things go drastically wrong.

I can just go back to Mavericks if I encounter any problems can't I? Guessing there will be support from Apple on it?

DP 4 (Public Beta) OK for main computer ??

Now you guys have me interested in trying it out on my MacBook Pro (High end retina MacBook Pro late 2013). I have an iOS developer account so I was thinking about using the developer versions since they'll be receiving more updates but maybe not. I assume that apple will only release stable builds for the beta people and release changes that can cause instabilities to developers.

I think that Yosemite looks gorgeous from all of the screenshots that I see.

I personally would not recommend it. DP4 is stable enough for day to day use, but there are still a lot of little bugs, that alone are fine, but could eventually add up to a frustrating experience. Especially since so many of them seem so random in who and how they effect people. Activity monitor for example. On some machines it works perfectly, for others (including me) it will crash on load every single time without fail.

I put DP2 on my 2012 air and within an hour I'd gone back to Mav. When DP3 came out I tried again and stuck with it as I had no problems. I've upgraded the Air to DP4 and have now installed DP4 on my main iMac. Zero issues.

Thats some serious dedication, Im too lazy to do that to my main rig, I usually just pop the DP in VMware and see whats up.

Just partition your drive or boot from external drive. DP4 is very stable there shouldn't be any MAJOR problems for use on main computer.

Luckily I have an extra computer to try it on!

That said, I wouldn't put it on your main computer. At the very least, create separate partition.

Couple questions, how can I download it to an external drive and then how do I boot from that drive?

In the installer, select the hard drive as the destination. To boot from it, press option on startup and select the drive.

You are right on the installer/selection boot drive ... Go to disk utility and make sure that the drive is Guid Partition table (intel based Macs requirement for Bootable drive albeit internal or external -- especially brand new drive or reformat wise) Hit the Yosemite installer then walk thru the screens select your Yosemite drive / partition then install ...

You know what they say "Once you go Mac (yosemite), you can never go back!"...Oh wait...did I get that saying wrong?:)
