BIOWARE AND TRANSGAMING ANNOUNCE MAC EDITION OF DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS

Edmonton and Toronto, Canada – December 14, 2009 – BioWare™, a division of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS), and TransGaming, Inc. (TSX-V: TNG) today announced plans to release Dragon Age™: Origins for the Mac® on December 21. The critically acclaimed, dark fantasy epic will be available to Mac Players as a digital download where they can choose between the Standard or Digital Deluxe version.

The Digital Deluxe version will feature additional content including: a collection of wallpapers, in-game bonus items, the game’s soundtrack and the Warden’s Keep additional content. Warden’s Keep provides players with a new dungeon-exploring adventure, new loot including a set of ancient Grey Warden armor, a chance to gain two of six mysterious new abilities, a new base complete with merchants and a party chest to store their hard-earned items. The Standard and Digital Deluxe versions are available now for pre-order through many popular online digital retailers.

“We are very excited to bring this award-winning title to the Mac community” commented Vikas Gupta, President and CEO of TransGaming. "Our Cider technology allows us to rapidly enable and deploy high quality titles like Dragon Age, and we are pleased to be delivering this exceptional caliber of gaming to the ever growing Mac gaming community."

Each version of Dragon Age: Origins for the Mac will also include The Stone Prisoner and the Blood Dragon Armor. The Stone Prisoner gives players access to new environments, items, hours of additional gameplay and the mighty stone golem, Shale, who can become one of the most powerful party members in the game. In addition, players will receive the Blood Dragon Armor, a set of themed armor that gives players additional protection in combat and will be available for use in both Dragon Age: Origins on the Mac and in Mass Effect™ 2 on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and PC.

In Dragon Age: Origins, players take on the role of a Grey Warden, one of the last of an ancient order of guardians. Now, as an evil blight threatens to destroy all life, it is up to players to unite the shattered lands and slay the corrupted dragon known as the Archdemon. To restore peace, players must make ruthless decisions and be willing to sacrifice their friends and loved ones for the greater good of mankind. Whether you're a new or veteran gamer, Dragon Age: Origins reinvents the fantasy experience, combining a great story with raw emotion and brutal action.

Dragon Age: Origins is now available on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 console and will be available on December 21 on The Mac at popular online digital retailers.

Based on past experience, be it with other BioWare games or other games that have been ported -- is the Mac version likely to be 100% as good as running the PC version in boot camp? (with respect to graphics, frame rate, performance etc.)

No.

Cider is typically a slight performance drag. All else, though, should work fine.

Great game - I've been addicted since it got released a month ago. I currently dual boot into Windows to play. If the performance is up to snuff (and if I can transfer my save games), I'll definitely pick this up.

I am interested in how all of the DLC stuff will work, as well as whether or not we'll get the 'real' soundtrack ...or just the mis-advertised 'sampler' that I got for my PC 'Deluxe Digital'?

I'm really thinking about grabbing this again to have on the Mac side, but after NWN2 I'm concerned about performance ...

Meh, Cider. I'll stick with my PC version. The performance hit would require turning down graphics settings even more on my pre-Unibody MBP. I pray that some day OpenGL can be as widely used as DirectX so we have a chance at a proper port.

Praise the Maker!!!

I have been trying to get this to work via Crossover Games, Wine, Cider, Wineskin, and anything else you can think of. I could get it to work in low settings only with my 8800GT installed in my MP, but not the ATI4870 I normally use. With the ATI card I could go full settings and it was "playable" but would get black flicker all the time.

I really wish this wasn't just a didgital download!!! I don't have that kind of bandwidth at home... I do at work though... could I download at work, copy to a DVD or external firewire drive and then install at home???

just to repeat what everyone else says

no being cider the performance wont be as good, and also osx has old video card drivers etc etc

but, im still very glad they are bringing titles out on the mac side as well

to tell the truth dragon age runs well even on weaker machines so it should run just fine even as a cider port

i already bought this pc side so dont know i can justify buying it again but who nos heh

anyway im glad they are still releasing macside games

and dragon age is a great title hehehe

(any rpg/bg nuts who havent played it yet - just, just go buy it already)

hm im just wondering...

obviously there are a lot of people working on the toolset now, and some interesting things are in devt seems like could end up being similar to nwn1

how likely is it that mods and modules and so on will work out of box with a mac version? i dont really have much experience with cider ports. is it all likely to be 100% compatible?

even though i bought the windows version and even though the graphics will be better under windows... i cant say im not thinking about buying the osx one when it comes

i dont mind booting into windows as such but, it stops me from bothering to you know fight one quick battle in 10 mins in between otehr things and stuff

People are not happy because it's not a native port. I played/own NWN2 "native" port from Aspyr and because they have not kept up with patches, I have setup NWN2 PC version to play under wine and/or Crossover games, which essentially uses the same basis of Cider - wine. I can tell you that NWN2 ran better under Crossover Games then the "native" port by a long shot. Sure it wasn't as good as the PC version, but it ran pretty damn good on my hardware in relation to the "native" version and the PC version. I know that CoD4 "native" port does not run as well as the PC version... Haven't tried CoD4 w/ any wine versions though, so not sure how well it would run under it... I do have the PC version of the new 2009 Wolfenstein and it runs great under wine/Crossover. There are only a few games I really play and true I would rather have a "native" port, but the implementation of wine/Crossover/Cider has come a long way IMO.

So what is better for digital downloads, Gametree or Direct2Drive? I have never used a digital download service to purchase a game before...

Direct2Drive is the better of the two that they listed as Distribution partners. I have purchased over 20 games from them and they have never given me a problem.

I already own the PC ver of the game so I won't be double dipping for this, but it's good to see game companies final starting to recognize the Mac as a real gaming platform.

If the goal is to increase Mac game sales to make make the Mac a more viable game platform, then I challenge all of you, especially those who stick to native Mac games (shunning Bootcamp) to go out and purchase this game! :D

If you like RPGs, although it does not have an open environment (which I prefer, like Oblivion has) it's still outstanding. I'm picky about this aspect of RPGs environments, I disliked NWN2 because of it, but the story and presentation in DA:O is top notch.

I love Direct2Drive, and like cc2096 also have well over 20 games with them.

I also like GamersGate quite a bit, and have ~20 or so with them as well - you might want to see who is offering anything better between the two.

Gametree I really dislike the terms of service, so I only have a couple with them - they are more restrictive than even EA!

My PC version was through Steam ... not decided who I'll grab the Mac version from.

Direct2Drive is great. Unlimited downloads, and pretty much the same restrictions as Steam, except there is no manager to use. You just download, enter some keys, and install.

Note that GameTree will only keep your download link active for 120 hours, after which you must email them to get it reactivated. And, "we may not always be able to reactivate your download." Eek. Doesn't sound good.

Wow, according to the website linked it requires 10.6.2 or higher. Seems strange to not have 10.5 support...

Would seem wierd, but the updated video drivers may have something to do with it? Oh and thanks all for the Direct2Drive recommendations. I was looking at terms of service and Gametree specifically says 3 installs only. Also that the D/L link will disappear after 120 hours, but would be available through your download history or something to that effect.

I bought the 360 version as well. Clearly they've had this in the pipe, they could have said this was coming earlier. Arguably it doesn't take that long for them to do a Cider port but there's lots of corporate licensing and paperwork to be done before and after. They've been planning this for at least a couple months.

I would have held off for the Mac build. I frankly had no inkling of an expectation for there to be a Mac release of DA, Ciderized or otherwise. It really feels like an attempt to double dip on the Mac users that would have already bought a console or Windows version, banking on the good will that Mac users will want to support Mac games. Or they can use it as an excuse to say, look we released a Mac game and it sold terrible. We have good reason to not sell on the Mac. Sure when you treat well paying customers like second class citizens, yea we're not going to send you double sacks of cashe.

It seems like every new Mac game officially states that it requires the latest MacOS to run, but maybe that is not strictly true in that they just did not do any testing on older OS versions. Of course it would be good to verify prior to purchase.

Hi,
Just wondering how this would run on a macbook pro with 2.53GHz Core Duo 2, 4GB RAM and the 9600M GT 512MB.

Don't know whether or not to get it on mac or xbox 360, if i got it on mac id want to be running it with graphics on high, would i be able to do that with my mac?

This is great news! More and more games are getting a Mac port, even if it is just with Cider. Hopefully they continue to optimise Cider to make it run better, and more developers decide to use it, or even make native ports. Either way, it's only good news for us Mac users.

I don't get the hang of offline RPGs (Actually I don't know WTF I'm doing in Bioware's Mass Effect).

But good to see more Mac OS X games.
