Dropped iPhone on Carpet. Broken.

Yep. I'm an idiot who wasn't watching his pocket when he jumps off the counter. iPhone hits the ground on the carpet kinda hard. Doesn't work much after.

I'm taking it into apple tomorrow. I am a bit let down with the durability of my phone, and I'll be seriously let down if they say they're not going to replace it. Granted it's my fault...it's freaking carpet

I guess i'll go into detail. The bottom home button is unresponsive, the mic BARELY works. The dock connector port doesn't work(but did for an hour?) and the speaker sounds like poo.
 
Wow, bad luck. I've dropped mine a few times, even on tile and not a scratch.
Good luck at the store. If it fell on carpet then it shouldn't have any external damage
 
That sucks. I've read of people testing the scratch resistance on the iPhones by dropping them on concrete and stuff. I haven't heard of them breaking. Must have hit just right. Hopefully they will replace it. Just don't mention anything about dropping it. Just say it stopped working. Let us know what happens.
 
I'm just curious, but what exactly happened to it? What isn't working anymore?

I mean it has no moving parts so other than the screen cracking, I can't see what would (easily) break.

Ok, just a question....did YOU jump off the counter, or did your iPhone "jump" off the counter?

If the former, I think I saw in the manual under troubleshooting an unresponsive iphone it said something like, "Stop jumping off counters"

If the I phone itself jumped off the counter I think you need to get it fixed, sit it down in a corner, explain how lucky it is that it was able to be fixed, and maybe it should think about this experience the next time it wants to jump from somewhere.


Seriously though, Sorry about your phone, just thought we could use some levity this morning.
 
The iPhone is a pretty complex device, so we can't expect it to be as durable as a $50 "dumb" phone.

Like my old man likes to say about these sort of gadgets: "you need to treat them like an instrument, not a toy".

Bummer that it broke though - this is exactly why I can never own an iPhone. I think I drop my phone on the ground an average of 1-2 times per week, or sit on it. I need something very rugged and cheapish to replace.

No offense to the OP, and I'm sorry to hear your phone is broken. But I don't think you can cite durability issues when you subject the phone to an intentional, potentially damaging scenario. And I'm afraid Apple might feel the same way.

Good luck getting your phone replaced/fixed. Keep us informed on how it goes, as this will be educational for all of us :)
 
There are plenty of people on other forums who've broken the front glass on them.

You're right about the "hit just right". I think since most of them have the glass off-center in the bezel, that it depends on if it hits on the side where they're tightest.

And I'm always astonished at how many people (children?) think a company should replace a device they dropped. There are industrial ruggedized phones that are built for that kind of thing, but a consumer piece of jewelry like the iPhone ain't one of them!
 
1st rule about the expensive iPhone: Guard it like there’s no tomorrow. 2nd rule: Always be aware of it so you still have one tomorrow… 3rd rule: If rule 1 and 2 fail, then it might be time to dish out $500+ again to replace it! But I do hope your friendly neighborhood Apple store will “replace” under warranty. Good Luck!
 
So did it fly out of your pocket mid-jump or in the recoil when you hit the ground?

If the latter, I think you have a clear concern that Apple may want to look at. Instrument, jewelry, or rock, this a device that is going to be in pockets with other items and may fall out when those other items are pulled out. The recoil fall is no different.

If the former, you may have been higher in the air than reasonable, and there really isn't any reason it should get replaced. Maybe a little higher than waist could be "backpack" high, but if it fell 8-10 feet, that would be higher than I think they should expect in normal usage. I like to think that Apple would have built in higher tolerances and so this was a freak accident, but I wouldn't bet the house on it.
 
hopefully apple will be kind and replace the thing for you, but i suspect if they determine that the phone was dropped they prob. won't replace it. I did observe a genius evaluate an ipod that he identified as being dropped and he did work with the person to replace it(i'm really unsure of the specifics).

But with regards to the units durability, i mean come on, you dropped the thing on the floor, the units aren't tested for the ability to withstand dropping i'm sure(except for what pcworld did).
 
i didn't like leap off the counter, i kinda just scooted too fast and it fell out of my pocket from about 2 1/2-3 feet, then hit the carpet.
 
what about if it needs to be sent in for repair? do you think they'll open it up and see that i dropped it?
 
You know you don't have to tell them it was dropped from a counter, you can tell them it was only dropped two feet. Yeah it might be a lie, but it might be the difference in getting your phone replaced. Not only that, but a phone shouldn't break that easily. Honest or not, I would do what would improve my chances of getting it replaced.
 
Yeah, I wouldn't mention the word DROPPED at all, If I were you I would tell them you woke up this morning, The Phone was powered of for some reason, and is now acting strange, not working etc...

Just my opinion but I think if you go in there and say you dropped it, you might not get very far...
 
if there is no physical damage to this thing. tell them it just stopped working. think of it as the don't ask don't tell policy.

i took it in and said it was being goofy, and they sent it in for repair. it has a small ding at the top (not from this drop) but from the first day i got it. i don't know if that will effect the decision process when looking at it to see if it's damage caused by me.

No offense, but it sounds like the biggest problem is you treat the thing like a Nerf ball.

Having said that, I hope it comes back to you repaired without any hassle.
