I'd cancel and see about doing a little poly-fill and sand. If it still looks like hell then maybe get it fixed.

Or

Don't do anything. Wait until the next revision. Sell it on eBay for $1500 and then buy a new one. The 120G single platters are supposed to be out soon. So you'll see a bigger hard drive and possibly a 2.0 processor. That way you'll only be out $300 and you'll have a better machine.

You can almost guarantee that someone will give you $1500 for a worn Air.

Are you kidding me? Maybe $1100 at the most.

Who in the right mind would buy something that's got a dent for $300 less than new? Might I add, without warranty.

Not sure if this applies to you, but if you bought your MBA with an Amex, more often than not you're covered through buyer protection:

Purchase Protection: Protects covered items for up to 90 days from the date of purchase if it is stolen or accidentally damaged.

regardless, if you did buy it with a credit card (Amex or not), I would check your terms and conditions ASAP.

I paid with half Amex / half Best Buy credit card...Not sure if that will apply to me or not...

It might... at the very least it's worth looking into. Here are two links to get you started:

https://www212.americanexpress.com/...ection_shareddetailsall&type=intbenefitdetail

https://www124.americanexpress.com/cards/benefits/includes/pdf/purchaseProtection2003.pdf

• As a Cardmember, your purchase is covered for 90 days from the date of purchase when you charge any
portion of the price of the purchased item with your Card account. You will only be reimbursed for the amount
charged to your Card.

• The Purchase Protection Plan provides coverage for up to $1,000 per Occurrence (up to $10,000 per
Occurrence for Platinum and Centurion Card members) of theft or accidental damage, including vandalism, (or
lost items for Platinum and Centurion Card members) (“Occurrences”) not to exceed $50,000 per Cardmember
account per policy year.

• The program administrator will decide whether to have the item repaired or replaced, or to reimburse you (cash
or credit) up to the amount charged to the Card, and not to exceed the original purchase price. The Purchase
Protection Plan does not reimburse for shipping and handling expenses or installation, assembly, or other
service charges.

YMMV... but again, at the very least, something is better than nothing. keep us posted on how it goes!

One of the reasons I used my Starwoods Amex card for this purchase. (I also bought the Zagg clear skin.

Sorry to hear about this.

Well, the machine is not broken horribly badly, it just got dented, everything else still works great...Typing this on it now...

Sorry I didnt mean it the bad way, I only meant to show the poster above a point why it will not sell for $1500. Noone can expect Apple to hold the warranty on an item that has been dropped and damaged. If the LCD will show some lines in the future, or HDD goes belly up, Apple will likely to blame it on the drop. That is why the warranty is called a "Limited Warranty"

Thanks. Well I called AMEX and because I paid half cash there is nothing they can do as far as the equipment protection. So I may throw it up on Ebay and see if I get any hits...I haven't canceled the repair through Apple yet...Anyone else had their Air repaired by Apple yet?

Good luck.

I have to admit, what I miss the most from the US (went there to college) is customer service. In Hungary, this is still a myth to most people and companies.

Hope you get it settled,

Ben

So sorry,

Dropping my MBA is a constant fear. It's one reason I don't use sleeves anymore. Sleeves are slick and all, but nothing beats the security of a strap over the shoulder and a zipped pouch.

Well the latest from AMEX is that they will cover up to the amount that I spent with them, meaning they will credit my card for up to $750 which is the amount of the total cost of the Macbook Air that I put on the AMEX, which will cover the cost of the new case from Apple...So hopefully this will have a happy ending...

Now another dilemma...Do I sell it for $1500 and then get a brand new one and pay for it entirely on the AMEX in case this happens again...I have a few offers right now...

I would say sell it for $1500, if there is someone who is willing to pay it. After all who knows what else went wrong during the drop....

Yes, and don't 'forget' to disclose that it was dropped and that there could have been other damage besides the case. : )

Seriously, this was the OP's fault/mistake. He shouldn't pass off a potentially bad machine to an unassuming bidder/customer/human being. Just imagine yourself buying his machine and everything breaking down a few days later and Apple refusing warranty repair because of the case notes showing that it was dropped.

Why? Because there's a sucker born every minute and there are people buying Air's on eBay for over $2000 for the base unit. For what reason I don't know, but people are paying higher than retail for them. Plus, you can break it down and sell it for parts and possible fix 3 or 4 other broken ones, sell those and make a killing. You can get $500 just for the logic board and another $200-300 for the display.

sorry for your mishap man! but am really glad Amex covers your fix! i would agree with the others that it's better to sell the dropped one and then buy a new one.

a little off-topic question here: i think krye mentioned in a prev post that 120 G single platters should be out this year. does that mean we will see the next revision of Air sometime this year with the bigger hard drive? this is the first time i've heard Air rev B is coming somtime this year.

I doubt this. If someone has $1500, they will likely to fork out the extra $300 for getting a new one. Don't forget, a machine that has been broken so badly, is out of warranty for HDD, Motherboard, LCD, etc.

Ben

Have you ever looked at what people pay for damaged MacBooks on eBay? I know it is hard to believe, but there are nuts over there paying ~80% of retail for damaged goods. As another poster already stated, I have seen people pay over retail for undamaged used machines(and that is before shipping costs) when the could go to the online Apple store, pay less, and get free shipping. I looked in to eBay when I bought my MacBook last year, and typically the bidding would go to ~$25-50 under retail with ~$35 shipping. Totally nonfunctioning Macbooks would get 50% of retail. I think people get caught up in the bidding & are dumb. The only time you'll see a decent price on a used Mac is in the refurb store.
