*Sorry if it's in the wrong section, I'm a lurker! :(

DS Lite - cheap and looks cool, games are top-notch, graphics are decent, no video playback, no music playback, and mainly I need something that will hook up to my speakers (Logitech Z-3) in my room and be able to play my music collection. The Lite does not do this.:(

PSP - I'm not going to waste money on buying special PSP speakers for this, I've heard that the music playback on this licks, but the browser, plus video playback is very good looking. So I'm not sure if this will be good for my need?

iPod Nano - The best for music playing obviously, I'm pretty sure my speakers will connect with the Nano in my room(speakers currently connected to my computer, but computer will be moved out of my room). :)

~
The PSP has the web browser(I have a wireless connection in my home) which will be very handy, insane video playback, graphics are really good for games, music playback is lacking? and most importantly of all it doesn't have a standard headphone jack so my Logitech speakers won't connect with it.

The iPod Nano however has a headphone jack in it and that means my Logitech's will connect most importantly, I'm current leaning towards the 4gb, they're currently $30 off at the retail stores, meaning from 280$ CAD they're at $250, and $200 for the 2gb Nano. I will obviously wait for the 2g Nano if I choose the Nano because I'm sure they're on there way at WWDC.

I make up my mind and then I look at the PSP's video playback, and web browser and my mind gets changed, so I need some help!:(

Thanks! I'm more of a lurker here at MacRumors, but I need some help!:D

I'm going to be picking up the Nintendo Wii, and PS3 after a price-drop, so I guess gaming isn't super important at this point. ;)

Oh really! Can you post a picture of the headphone jack on the PSP? :)

Thanks!

I don't have a picture - but I can confirm - standard 3 and a half milimeter jack on the PSP.

If music playback is your priority, you're better off with the Nano. Heck, buy the Nano ($149) and a DS ($129) plus two games ($60) for virtually the same cost as the PSP ($199), a 1GB stick ($60) and two games ($80).

Honestly, I love both my DS and my PSP. I play them about equally, but if I were in your shoes, I'd do the DS/Nano combo. I never listen to music on my PSP, probably b/c I have a 60GB iPod.

So how do you PSP owners feel about the music playback on the PSP?

I'm swaying towards the PSP because my friend has one with the 1.50 firmware and it's fun playing emulators and junk on it, plus a 1gb stick will be just insane!:D

As long as the newer firmware's get hacked it's good right?:D

You can downgrade the newer versions for homebrew (with the risk of bricking your PSP) but I'm not sure if there's a downgrader yet for the newer versions, there might be. I dunno but to start with a decent set of PSP, memory stick + whatsoever will cost as much as an iPod. I would rather get an iPod. So I would stay out of it (PSP) if gaming is not your priority here. It's hard to compare here as they're both not exactly in the same category. And yeah i heard it's a pain getting video files to work on a PSP and PSP doesn't support playlist. Well you can play movies on the DS provided you get one of these,

I'll be honest, a PSP can go against a Nano, or a DS lite, but a DS lite vs Nano really is not a fair fight because they don't really do what the other does.

Since of a PSP you going to spend 250(before tax with no games) i'd go for a Nano AND DS, and you'll spend only a bit for for 2 things that do their jobs better then the PSP(DS better at gaming is really ones option, but i can't see someone saying a Nano is worse at music then the PSP)

I agree with you guys, but the thing for me is the PSP is one device and it'll do the job of two, I'm not really super-interested in the DS Lite except for the price-tag.

I really really want that web-browser feature in the PSP, I know about Opera for the DS Lite, but it's just not the same thing :p.

I guess I could get the PSP and a 1gb stick and that would do for now right? Then buy a game or something later on maybe...

And as for the downgrading on the newer versions, what happens if you brick your PSP? I think instead of games I'd be using the PSP for it's multimedia features; web browser, videos, music and photos.

uuhhhmm AFAIK they havent yet, its supposed to be VERY hard to crack, but i could be wrong.

Be careful about downloading something that'll promise to downgrade your firmware, you could end up bricking your PSP. (or so i've heard) you can see it here

personally, i'd stick with the nano as a music player, works with your mac, really small. i have a psp and i guess the sound quality is good. but you cant use any music you've download from iTMS on it :(. so i'd go w/ a Nano and DS Lite (it has better games)

I'm leaning toward the PSP more and more now, it does everything I need plus more, and I think even without homebrew I'll be happy with it!:)

My friend has one with 1.50 fw and 1gb ms and he loves it, and I love playing ridge racer!:)

n8236 - Sony rocks, I will buy the Wii and PS3(later), and I'm rarely out, thanks! That helped me realize I'm rarely out, so a iPod will be a waste! :)

PSP = POS

I say this having owned a PSP , there is a serious lack of original/quality games. Most of them are Ports from PSP then have been downgraded for PSP Hardware.

The browser is fun at 1st but it really gets tiring after a while , PDA's are much more efficient at this. plus u need an a bigger memory stick or else the web cache will build up too fast and pages won't load up due to lack of memory.

UMD's are slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww to load up ,

Battery life is not great , say maybe 3.5-4hrs

MP3 Player is not loud enough

Too damn fragile , I swear this thing drops on marble or concrete it will be bye bye PSP , you really have to handle this system with kids gloves.

.........................

DS Lite has 2 gorgeous screens , both are actually brighter then the PSP's with out the ghosting , Clam Shell design automatically protects the screens .

Cartridges = zero load time , durability , smaller design , as flash gets cheaper and cheaper , the size of games will only increase.

Games , you have every GBA games to choose from plus new DS stuff like Mertroid , NSMB , Mario Kart(I love it) , Trauma Center(nerve wrecker).

Incredible interaction , with the built in mic / touch screen. When the Opera web browser is released that touch screen will be a godsend.

Battery Life 6-20hrs depending on screens brightness. small design allow you to put this thing in your pocket , unlike PSP.

I'll put it like this , I had a PSP for about 6 months played with it for maybe 2 months then it sat in my dresser drawer , sold it and got a DS lite + 2 games with the money. Trust me No Regrets at all.

I say DS Lite + Nano , both are great at what they do. PSP is one of those all in one devices that never seem got get any 1 thing right. I also don't believe Sony is devoted to the PSP as N* is to DS , this is likely to get worse when PS3 comes out and Sony focuses all it's resources on that mess.

If the OP is now realizing that portability of music is less of a factor than first thought, then I'll suggest that you gto EB or BB or wherever you want, check out the titles for both the DS and PSP. Figure out which system has the games you want, and buy that system.

I have a PSP and, while the browser works and has some geek apeal, that fades, as it is tiresome to use. I went back to only using my laptop for browsing soon after toying with the PSP's solution. However, if you need the portability b/c you don't have a laptop, by all means, go for the PSP. Despite what people on these boards say, it is a decent system. I love mine.

Think I'll go play me some Ape Escape Academy...

Browsing on handhelds are never good. I would just go with an iPod though not the Nano if you're looking into videos. If you're not into gaming then why bother PSP or DS Lite. I wouldn't want a PSP for "music, videos, browsing". Thats what I think though. 1GB/2GB for music/videos is just not the type of thing for me.

A PSP has a lot of functions but it might be a bit bulky to carry around just for music but the music playback is good....the new update allows itunes format now(I think..need to read up on that)

The PSP is only 199.99 now but the memory cards will jack you good but if you are looking for a multi-purpose rig then the PSP is for you oh and it works with both macs and PCs without problems.

Homebrew is fun as well..Loco Roco is the best game for the PSP

Bless

If you want the PSP badly, you should consider a decent v1.5 PSP and a 2GB memory stick pro duo off ebay. That should do the job. ;)

Isn't it weird to do web browsing on a PSP with only a few buttons? How to you type in the web address:confused:

Web browsing sucks on the PSP...I brows by my favorites..typing is too hard and it takes too much time(A Typing pad comes up when you are ready to type). The nub is used like a mouse and it gets the job done.

I have all three of the devices and my PSP is collecting dust. I use my DS lite very infrequently but I use my nano every single day. If I had to choose only one device I would go with the Nano because music is everything to me. If you are more of a gamer I would go with teh DS lite. It has better games. Thats my 2 cents.
