That is why I think that a G5 2.5 at $2000 or slightly less is a great value right now. It is much faster than the DC 2.0/2.3 newly released models except for the Ram and there's no PCI-E. By the time the best PCI-E cards our out in full swing, the Rev A. Intel PM's will be out. Most tests still show the 2.5 models destroying the Intel iMacs in most tests and only being beat by the 2.7 and Quad. When Intel PM's arrive they will need to be Quad in my opinion to outdo the current G5 models, but even then the current Quad might hold it's own quite well.

...Having said that by september you willl have your dream machine if you can wait that's when the new intel 64 bit cpus come out.

Where'd you get this information from?

How is that? The PPC was designed to outlast the imac especially in expandability. You want it to go faster, add upt to 16 Gigs of ram even another "internal" hard drive. How much could you add to and Imac?

Do you honestly believe that the the new Intel Imac is way faster then the latest quad processor G5's? I don't. Especially in video, 3D animation, rendering and compositing. Whoa! It starts up faster, that's not what I need.

Granted the new Intel macs are cool and apple is going in the right direction, but there's just way too much hype out there, it's like every one "needs" these new macs will blow everything away rather then just seeing it for what it is, another step up revision.

i meant to compare an imac G5 to the intel imac, not the quad G5 to the intel imac. but my point is clearly apple is moving on to intel, so why not buy a computer with an intel processor, instead of buying one with a PPC processor, since eventuallly apple will not make them anymore.

that being said, i would love to have a quad G5, but they are just too expensive for me right now. maybe i can afford one later.

back on topic, i was in the market for a new computer. the intel mac mini's didn't come out, and i thought it would be quite stupid to buy a G4 mini, or even a G5 imac, when i could get the new intel imac that is dual core processor.

Another point to add is that if one wants to upgrade an Intel iMac they really can't. You either get 128Vram or 256Vram CTO. Also, I feel that the best is yet to come for the Intel chips which will eventually really outperform all the G5's.

that is probably true, you just have to wait (which i don't think anyone likes doing)

2.7

Not to start a new thread....I'll ask this here.....PM 2.7 with 1GB Ram a good deal for $2100?

Lets not forget the 64-bit nature of the G5s and the overall bandwidth of the dual-G5 setup. Apple will have to do some serious scrambling to match those numbers with upcoming intel versions, let alone surpass them.

Merom/Conroe/Woodcrest will all be 64-bit and have increased FSBs over the current Intel chips. Woodcrest will have a 1333Mhz FSB, for example (source).
