He was using external power however, I'm fairly sure.

Note how the 750ti gives the old Quadro 4000 a good beat down, mind you from a card that requires NO (0) additional power cables.

Something else that isn't 100% spelled out, the R9 290X has our PCIE 2.0 mod. So results at home will be somewhat less than that card. For most stuff he found modest improvement but he found a few places where it made a difference. One benchmark in particular went up 20% versus the non-modded PCIE 1.0 stock version. So running one you get from Newegg won't match all of the numbers he got. GTX980 will run at PCIE 2.0 in a 4,1/5,1 in OSX so those numbers are the same as what you will see.
